Awakening Chapter 1

Today, is his 21st birthday.
It was supposed to be a happy occasion...spending time with his family and friends... laughing and eating happily...
But now here he is. Alone on a bed without anyone with him.
All because of that damn virus!
It was to be expected, after all this deadly virus makes it impossible for anyone to be near him. Even doctors have to be very careful when approaching him, not to mention other people.
Laying in bed helpless to even sit, his face was extremely pale. On his chest, there was a devices that measures his heartbeat.
But despite his miserable appearance, his eyes were strangely calm.
"Cough, cough...it seems I don't have much time. To die on my birthday, I am quite lucky."
The young man, Avren, muttered these words. His mind was clear as he accepted his fate.
Although no one was in the room, the doctors were constantly checking his status from another room.
"Beb...beb....beb....beb.........beb...."
The sound of the heart beat device sounded in the room where the doctors stayed.
"Sigh, this young man is really pitiful. An engineering student with a good future. What a pity!" One of the doctors said while checking on the files Avren.
"Yeah I have never been more sad about a patient than him. What's even more heart breaking is the way he accepted it like it's nothing. Even though we have nothing more we could do, I have this feeling of guilt haunting me." Another doctor who was middle aged, doctor Murdoch, said with a sad tone.
The other doctors in the room looked at each other and sighed.
The heartbeat sound from the devices continued until...
"Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...."
The curve on the screen of the device turned to a straight line, announcing that Avren's heart stopped beating.

He's dead!
Doctor Murdoch's body trembled for a while. Then he smashed the cup in his hand into the wall.
"Damn it!"
Then he walked out of the room.
The other doctors didn't speak for a while. Finally one of them said:
"His current status is confirmed. No heartbeat nor any brain activity. He's really.... dead."
The doctors continued their work normally. Although they were sad they must continue their tasks. After all, this isn't the first time they witness the death of someone.
But at that time the sound of heartbeat that disappeared for a while, returned back!
"Beb.............beb.......beb....beb....beb....beb"
All the doctors were stunned.
Not only the sound but also the straight line on the screen of the device starting going up and down.
His heart, started beating again!
"This... How is this possible?!"
"Quickly, quickly check all his body functions!"
"Everything is normal! He...he's alive again!"
They couldn't believe themselves. A person who was confirmed 100% dead came back to life again!

Constructive critism is welcome! However please do not just bash my story as I do put a lot of effort into it. I want to make an enjoyable story for myself as well as all of you. Ps: It's time to come back and rewrite the entire thing, since it kind of went off the rails and then I abandonded it a couple years ago. Thanks to my friend for drawing the cover art for me.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
