《Blaze》Chapter 57 - Own Plans

Samantha looks at the scene with her binoculars. “Mercenaries are going in.” She says, describing the scene. “Looks like there's a welcome party.” She says with a smirk.
The mercenaries approach the camp and a man, accompanied by several others, was there to greet them.
“Hello.” The man says to the mercenaries.
“Hi. Don't mind us. We're just travelers hoping to ask a few questions.” The mercenary says with a friendly smile, but his friends were immediately on guard. If things went South, they were ready to act.
The man smiles. “I hear you’ve been asking around about a group of mages. Who were you asking about specifically? And which college sent you to inquire about them?” He asks.
The mercenary lets out a bitter smile. “If you must know, it’s the Red River College.” He says as his hand hovers near the hilt of his sword.
The man continues to smile. “That’s all we needed to know. Well, since you came, you might as well stay. Buried in the ground, that is.” He says before waving a hand.
The group of people behind the man immediately take out their wands and staves and in a moment, a barrage of magical energy was sent shooting forward.
“Shit. Defend!” The mercenary yells as he raises his shield and steps back to form a defensive barrier with the other mercenaries.
Samantha smiles. “That’s our signal. Send in our people.” She says before waving her hand.
As the people behind them began to shuffle and prepare to charge, Serah grabs the binoculars from Samantha’s hands. “Let me see.” She says before taking a look. “Hmm, magic missiles, fireballs, ice spears. These guys aren’t too tough. They’re probably an even match for the students on our side. Even without the mercenaries.” She comments, not too impressed.

“Don’t let looks deceive you. For the moment, they’re dealing with a small group of mercenaries. Some of those students have even gone through three years at the college. I wouldn’t underestimate them.” Samantha replies.
Serah puts the binoculars down. “Whatever. Let’s go down and see what they’re made of then.” She says before beginning to follow the crowd.
…
…
“Shit! We’re being attacked!” One of the mages calls out. “Start using area of effect magic!” He calls out before beginning the spell for a Fire Storm.
Other students immediately catch on and begin to fuel their magical energy into man’s spell.
“Halt!” A mercenary calls out. He very much didn’t want to walk into the red cloud forming in the sky. “Bowmen, ready! Fire at will!” He calls out.
A group of arrows were immediately shot out, one after another, in a semi-steady stream.
Mages from the opposing side began to take hits, as arrows caught them unaware and as they broke through barriers.
The fire cloud in the sky becomes unstable, and it wasn’t long before it imploded into itself before all the gathered energy exploded outwards.
Several mages immediately felt the backlash and were sent to the ground, blood leaking from their noses.
We can’t take any more of this. One of the men thinks to himself. He forces himself to stand and he throws his staff to the ground. “We surrender! We surrender!” He calls out, not caring about what his fellow group members thought.
“Fuck!” Another mage exclaims before throwing his wand on the ground. “We surrender!” He shouts, albeit reluctantly.
Eventually, the other mages saw the trend, and saw that there was no stopping it now. With a sigh, they also threw down their weapons.
“Take them as prisoners!” Samantha calls out. “I’ll interrogate them myself…” She says to those around her.
Serah smiles. “I’ll join you.” She says. Serah had her own plans for these mages…

An ancient, ageless entity of magic intertwines with the essence of a tribal hero and a god is born. In a land where the worship of any entity is banned and punishable by mass-execution, the young and idealistic deity must come to terms with the ugliness of humanity, and find a way for his flock to survive, and maybe even thrive. A young man born into a mountain tribe treads the path of a hero, but he must learn the extent to which he would go to keep his people and their fledgling god safe and happy. Enemies are everywhere, and to defend their way of life, they must learn to harness the power of magic. Others are ahead of them in this regard, so they must act fast if they are to survive. A Xianxia-esque magic system, but with a focus on Western-style spellcasting and mysticism. This is more or less a deconstruction of classical fantasy and pantheons. The story focuses on two main characters; a God and a hero who serves him. Kingdom building themes are prevalent. If you like it, please remember to rate and review.

Life on Torus Terminal is usually fast paced, but simple. A frontier Terminal has little room for easy living, but the great, circular station does boast shopping and culinary experiences from many Imperial races and cultures. Any star is, by its nature, extremely far from its neighbors. But laser highways, and the great shimmering sails of the light-rider spaceships make the trip into only about ten years. Still, the denizens of Torus Terminal eagerly await the day when the Anti-Euclidean Engine their station is built around finally comes online. Once that is done, they will have unfettered access to the entire Empire. Instantaneous travel and trade across hundreds of stars. Torus Terminal does boast one other oddity: a creature which calls itself Human. As he says, the last of his kind for now. He has made quite the life for himself on Torus Terminal, especially in the darker corners of the station. The elites of Torus Terminal praise his name, for once he took up arms, crime began to fall. What they did not realize was that was because he had claimed the seedy underbelly of Torus Terminal for himself and his own goals. The elites praise him as a paragon of law. The criminals fear him as a ruthlessly clever crime boss. Those closest to him, know him as the General. This story was originally posted on the Humanity Fuck Yeah subreddit, where it evolved from a simple play on a historical figure in a science fiction setting into a full blown space opera. I kind of took it as an opportunity to explore a setting I've had rolling around in my head for years. I also decided that it would be nice to have it in a place where I could more easily come back and edit it later, so I'm reposting it here. Here's a link to the original posting if you're interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/comments/e9cwpl/post_war_rules/ If my genre and tagging is subpar, let me know. I'm still new to Royal Road and I'm open to help. Feel free to comment and make suggestions, or discuss. I love comments, and so long as we keep things civil I also love criticism.

8 170Crimson Gloom
Crimson Gloom. The time when the moon turns crimson, illuminating the landscape with its crimson glow. The time when the ‘doors’ to the Crimson Abyss open. One shall gaze into the abyss and gain its secrets and powers. Concurrently, the abyss also gazes into oneself, gaining one’s sanity and humanity. Dimensional rifts appeared spontaneously on Earth, bringing otherworldly demons along with the Crimson Gloom. Bloody battles were fought, noble sacrifices were made. Humans eventually sealed the rifts and successfully defended their homeworld. Alas, the seals were not perfect. The Crimson Abyss continued to exist, slowly influencing Earth and its inhabitants. Half a century of relatively uneventful years passed… humanity slowly descended into corruption, and the majority of them knew nothing of the effects of the Crimson Abyss. Is there only the dreadful gloom left to the world? Can one find brightness in the increasingly gloomy world? The youth who had gazed into the Crimson Abyss had no answer, nor did he care. He only wanted the Crimson Gloom to end, to forever seal the Crimson Abyss. A mistake and a twist of fate led the youth into a seemingly totally different direction. Will he forget his lifelong goal? Will he instead step back onto his initial path that he fervently pursued? Disclaimer: I do not own the image on the cover. Image edited on canva.com. This piece of work, after all, is only a first draft and by no means an end product by an amateur (beginner) writer. Mistakes are bound to happen. With that said, I will strive to improve as I write. Feel free to point out errors and inconsistencies as you read. I thank you for your time. Finally, I pledge to not rewrite this novel until the first draft is completed.
