《Moon Rabbit: Threaded Fate》Chapter 21: A Brief Han Jing Interlude

Once upon a time,
A long time ago, there lived four good friends. They were the Fox, the Monkey, the Otter and the Rabbit. It didn't matter to them at all that they were quite different from one another. It didn't matter that the Otter liked playing in the rivers, the Monkey swung through the trees or that the Fox usually preyed on small creatures like the Rabbit. It so happened that the four of them were able to get along.
One day, an old beggar came to the forest and stumbled upon the animals.
"Can you please give me some food? I am so hungry." He pleaded.
The animals felt pity and agreed to help the poor old man.
The Otter returned with freshly caught fish in the river.
The Monkey gathered several fruits from the tree.
The Fox pilfered a lizard and a pot of milk-curd.
Only the Rabbit had nothing to give, for all it knew was grass to eat.
Knowing this, the Rabbit asked the beggar and his friends to prepare a bonfire. When the fire crackled and blazed hot—the Rabbit leapt to the flames as food for the beggar.
"Well damn, did he really do that?" Han Jing raised a brow, watching a children's educational video on the legend of the Moon Rabbit. "That's actually pretty dramatic, I should have known he'd do something like that." He unpaused the video to continue the clip.
The beggar turned out to be a Powerful Deity who brought the Rabbit to the moon as a reward for his kindness.
The End.
Han Jing's face scrunched up. "What's with the end?! It didn't even tell anything about what happened to the Rabbit's friends or how exactly could being taken to the moon be a reward? That Deity just separated him from his friends—well he obviously meets this Chang'e moon goddess or something, but not cool. Geez." He rolled his eyes and rolled over his bed.

"I hope that guy is okay or whatever with that spirit they'll be battling…wait, Kit guy, Chan Lee said that the spirit she encountered was named Kit… Kit...Kitsune! Fox." Han Jing scratched his nose, fighting back a snort. "What a pretty bad pseudonym… but I guess I'm the only one who could have figured this out. I guess it's too late to have warned them or something."
"Mom! Big Brother Jing is talking to himself again." A little girl's voice shouted.
He scratched his head and turned to the girl sitting on the couch. "Oi! Shut up Jinjing! I'm just watching something!"
"Mom! Big Brother is watching something weird on his phone again!" His sister continued and stuck out a tongue at him.
That little brat. "I am not!" He frowned and rolled to the edge of his bed.
"Han Jing could you please stop upsetting your sister?" His mother's back was turned away from them, fussing over something at their dining table.
"Why can't I get any privacy around here." He groaned and decided to play his favorite game on his phone. "I wonder what time Chan Lee gets home." He muttered to himself, at least it was quieter there.

The Designated: Out of Control
It happened quicker than anyone would have imagined. Multiple hurricanes were one thing. People had dealt with that in the past. But, like kids playing dominoes, one thing crashed into another. Areas affected by hurricanes needed resources all along the Gulf and East Coasts drew rescuers and resources away from other parts of the country. When wildfires lit up the Pacific coast and mid-west, those areas were already understaffed. Driven by hurricanes in the Pacific basin, uncontrolled wildfires burned through towns, destroying everything in their paths. Across the Pacific, Asia didn't escape. From the Philippines, across China, into Indochina, and Bangladesh and India. Typhoons and cyclones pounded the coasts and far inland. Widespread flooding forced millions from their homes and across international borders. Mexico was hit hard and thousands died in mudslides as Katia slammed into their East Coast. The refugees fled north and west. Rumours started that hundreds of thousands were headed for the US border. Instead of running out of steam in the southern US, several hurricanes tore up the eastern seaboard, devastating cities and renewing their strength before veering east across the Atlantic. Maria and Ophelia veered east and slammed into Europe, reaching as far as the Netherlands and Russia before finally dissipating. After that, too many weather stations were offline to provide any form of co-ordinated information or warnings. Wildfires in Portugal burned ahead of the storms, fanned by hurricane winds. They sparked wildfires leapfrogging across Europe, beyond any one country's ability to cope. Already uneasy from multiple terrorist attacks over the summer, anti-refugee groups seized the opportunity to stage protests across Europe. Some turned violent as they clashed with police forces. Several governments declared martial law to quell the rioting and enforce evacuations along the path of the storms. Rumour and speculation overwhelmed facts. Unrest spilled over into widespread violence. Then sickness broke out in the displaced populations. Within a matter of a dozen weeks, tens of millions died. In the coming winter months hundreds more would follow. The Designated Project was activated.
