There was nothing for me to do but walk in the dark. One foot in front of the other, I could no longer tell if I was going slow or fast. I had no idea how long I had walked, or indeed how long each step took. I just kept going. It could have been for hours. Maybe days. Perhaps weeks.

My tummy felt uncomfortable as it twisted itself into knots. Maybe I was hungry. I was definitely thirsty. I kept walking until I tripped. I got up and walked some more, tripping every few steps, until I could not get up again.
