《Avalon》12. Countdown

Val stepped into the glass booth, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. Behind him, several dozen people crowded the tables in the center of Elle’s basement, staring at a large projector screen positioned against the back wall. The projector would be displaying the spectator mode of Avalon – a mode where the viewers could control what area of the map to look at or a specific player’s point of view. Elle sat at a computer near the projector, controlling which view the audience could see.
Taking one last backwards glance at the audience, Val pulled on his headset and entered his credentials into the game. Navigating to the tournament server, he connected to the voice channel of Team 8.
“This is Val,” said Val. “Anyone here?”
“How do you put this thing on?” Sydney’s voice said, audio faint.
“It’s getting caught in your hair,” said Blaze. “Take it off for a moment -”
“Get back to your own booth!” a referee roared.
“I’ll be over soon!” said Blaze. After a brief pause, he spoke again. “Do you know why?”
“GET BACK TO YOUR BOOTH!”
“It’s ‘cuz I’m fast!” Blaze hollered, voice fading into the distance.
“Hello?” said Sydney, seemingly having gotten her headset on properly. “…is this damn thing on?”
“Yeah I can hear you,” said Val. “Anyone else here?”
“DJ here,” said DJ.
There was a click as someone else joined the comms.
“Who joined?” DJ asked.
“I’m not first?” Blaze asked. “That’s strange…this game must be a bit messed up.”
“Willow?” asked DJ. “You here?”
“…here,” said a hoarse whisper.
“Okay, we’ve got everyone,” said DJ. “…what do we do now?”
There was a moment of silence.

“Plug your character card in,” said Val. “After the Equipment Phase, there will be a confirm button. Once we’ve all confirmed, the game will start.”
“Wow!” said Blaze. “You seem to know a lot about this! You play in tournaments before?”
“…nah,” Val replied. “It…it just makes sense.”
“You’re lying, buddy,” said Blaze. “But I don’t care. Just ‘cuz you’ve played in tournaments before doesn’t mean you’re faster than me.”
Val let the conversation drop to take the time to plug in the character card of Lancaster the Knight into the headset. Heading into the equipment screen, Val chose his standard setup – Dragonbone Longsword, Steel Armor, and several Health Potions.
“What do I buy?” Sydney asked. “Should I buy a sword? A shield?”
“Buy a Healer’s Amulet and a bunch of Mana Potions,” said DJ. “Besides that, just look for items that reduce the cooldown on your healing spell or improve your mana regeneration.”
“…Blaze?” Sydney asked.
“Just listen to the nerd,” said Blaze. “He probably spends all his time playing this game anyways.”
A couple minutes later, all of the players had confirmed their equipment setup. On screen, a countdown to the game began – a large white number on a pitch-black screen.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen this countdown, thought Val, watching the numbers decrement. The last time I saw it, I hoped I’d never see it again…I didn’t think I’d be back so soon.
The timer dropped down to 0, and game one began.

How the Stars Turned Red
Announcement as of 05 July 2022: I've been diagnosed with some pretty severe nerve damage in my left arm, rendering me unable to write effectively, and as such this story is on hold until it is healed. I am so sorry, and I promise to get back to writing as soon as possible. In the latter half of the 3rd millennium CE, humanity has spread across the stars, inhabiting close to five-hundred worlds across the Orion Arm. Earth has become irrelevant, a historical has-been. The galactic map is dominated by two mega-factions, both controlling vast amounts of territories either through direct control or through their many allies and treaty signatories. The Kingdom of Aurora is the political and economic hegemon despite consisting of only seven inhabited worlds; their strength lies in the Royal Union, an interstellar commonwealth composing an internal market and a common defence pact. These member worlds are myriad and varied, culturally as well as politically, but they all flock to the same banner. The Independent Systems Alliance, spearheaded by the Republic of Elysium, is the ascendant challenger to Aurora and the Union. A pseudo-federal multi-system polity, the Alliance economy and military is rapidly expanding, but at the cost of effective democratic and meritocratic involvement by its people. However, with two superpowers as this, chafing along a common border, and with a constant clamour of polemics, both sides have become convinced the other is constantly preparing for war and are on the look-out for any perceived weakness in their opponent. The predictable result is a huge arms race and a cold war spreading across the stars, requiring only a spark to set the galaxy aflame. Drawn into this game of high stakes are ordinary men and women, their peaceful lives, hopes, and aspirations swallowed by the vortex of conflict and distrust. This is their story. Cover art by Rhodex Designs (FB). Hope you like long chapters and adjectives. Note: English is not my first language. Another story set in the same universe, written by a good friend

The Primordial
With one goal fueling him, he broke through the final barrier, reaching the apex of power and regaining that which was once lost. Trying to find a new beginning, he reforged himself anew as he awoke to memories of a long forgotten past. Memories that intersected with his new reality. His invincible soul now unchained, surprises await him as he begins his new jouney in an unknown land. I'm just writing this for fun, but i'll never drop it. This won't be something short, as I have the very long term in mind, but I'm a total noob to writing, so I most likely won't release chapters very often, at least until I really get the hang of it. But, the chapters will always be several thousand words long. At the minimum 2k, maximum like 6k... Pretty big variations, sorry. If you like it, great. If you don't, that's understandable. Regardless, if you have a read, I'd appreciate feedback for areas you think I should improve on, whether it's the use of some words or how I should write something or WHATEVER. I'm open to anything, good or bad, because with your help, it'll help make this story better. **DISCLAIMER** So you don't waste your time, I want to let you know what you're getting into, because I like knowing ahead of time before I read something. This might appear like a Xianxia novel, but it's not. It only starts that way. This is a western fantasy world and setting that many of you are familiar with. The beginning chapters might be a bit of an info dump. Some of it might seems superfluous, but a lot of information is relevant to the story. The first few chapters might also seem rushed, but I'll try to keep it exclusive to those. This is a cliche, OP MC story with the typical harem, but other than the quick start, everything else will be gradual. There will be romance, and probably many moments at that, but don't expect anything TOO detailed. If you want something really steamy, look elsewhere. References and throwbacks to stuff most likely. The setting won't be really dark or really light. Middleground, I guess. The MC is far from a young kid, but he won't totally reflect his age. I don't plan on discarding info, abilities or characters that you KNOW should come back and be around. I see it a lot and it sort of bugs me haha... but I could have oversights, I dunno. As I said, I'm a noob. That's it, really. If you're interested, welcome to my world!

Threads
A legendary landmass long since believed lost to the world reappears in the seas of the island nation of Annitou, setting off a frantic race by the surrounding governments to acquire its allegedly powerful secrets. From every corner of the map comes settlers, merchants, pirates, and the strongest enforcers of each country's sovereignty: the Agents, individuals with unique, sometimes seemingly divine talents which can rival the power of even an army. However on the lawless frontier of the newly rediscovered island of Jinchi, national loyalties and personal ambition are put to the real test. Threads follows the interconnected stories of individuals from all strata of this world, from the lowly in-training cadets, to the mighty and seemingly invincible generals, to the otherwise innocuous and 'powerless' civilians. Each person holds a piece of the puzzle- but nobody can say how it will ultimately be put together.
