《Storm of the Elementals》Chapter 3 - Systems, names and guesstimating a plan

I open my status, and begin probably the weirdest book club in history as we all, excluding Hernon, start reading our status.

What I see almost starts up yet another headache; a lot of it needs some serious mental gymnastics and unpacking to properly digest.

True Name: [Aqzuran Keteroch] Species: ̴̺̩̰͍̀[̸̼̜͈͍̜̠͍̤͌̌ɯ̵͚̤̿̀̇͂̀ɹ̷͍̼̰́̾̓̀̀̚o̵̯͚̱͖͖̔̾̂͗̈́̈́͜͜͠ʇ̵̨̢͕̟̭͑͊̆S̷͈̞̈́̅ ̵̩̹͉̈́͊̉́̽ͅǝ̸̛̠̍̅͐̓̅̚ɥ̸̢̰̣̥̥͈͎͕̽ʇ̵̡̨͓̲̳͎̻̈́̃͜ ̶̢̞̼̝̘̱͔̜̇͆̍̀́ɟ̷̨̬̜̣͓̩́̀̉̅̑̓͒̕o̸̹̟͙̿̀̔ ̸͔̈́̓ļ̵̣͓̲̼̣̲͙̜̱̒̾̌͌̀̑̊͠ɐ̴̨̙̆͗̃̈́͛̆ʇ̸͈̞̒̽̏̀̎̆̀̓́͘ͅǘ̴̱͙͓̯̽̅̽͑̚͘ǝ̷͕͉̪͇̽ɯ̴̨̹̼̪͙͔͎̩̈́̀̔̎͝ǝ̷̛͎̪̪͕̘ͅl̶͈̞͔̲͖̐̎͐͜͠͝Ǝ̸̟̳̯͉̫̺̯̇͊̀̋̐͛̍͘̕͝ ̸̪͑̂̓ǝ̵͓̊̈́n̵̯̳̤ɹ̷̨̪͔͗̈́͗̀͑̚⊥̶̜̦̜͉͎̪͍͎̓͒̓͒̏̽̚͜͝]

As I read through my status, I can't help but have very mixed feelings about what exactly the menu says, combined with a mix of concern that it actually happened and works.

In front of my very eyes, is a transparent blue box, just like a video game, an RPG of all things too.

At least it isn't some awful shooter I got put into; I gave up on those games real quick, though god fucking damn, just how much of what Jacob said is true? Is he some damn prophet?

Not only that, but there were a few things about the system and its status I could barely understand. Even though I don't remember my old name I was pretty sure it wasn't that, my species is all glitched out and I am not too confident it says 'human' under all that mess, apparently there is an avatar of me I get, and one of the most intriguing is the [Pioneer of the Tenth Age] title.

First though, here is what I do know.

Confirming that at least something from my old world was brought with me was very reassuring, though it wasn't even my name, which is the fact that I got recognised as a historian, even though I technically didn't finish it, I will, however, take what I can get.

Secondly, even though being a 'True Elemental' is a little confusing, and it doesn't tell me what my element even is, though what I get from looking at the glitched species text is a headache, a lack of comprehending like it just blocks me from understanding it, and the vague feeling that it has something to do with wind.

So a wind element or something? Thank god it isn't something stupid like those 'cosmic' or 'void' elements that everyone seems to get and want in those books and games Jacob looks at, man wouldn't shut up about it.

Those are the good things.

The not so good things are that this seems way too close to main character territory, or that fricking [Avatar of Keteroch] seems both really cringy and like something found in Mythology.

I just want to do history and exploration, why does my status look all glitched out, it wouldn't be glitching out if I was a normal historian.

Unfortunately, my internal mumbling is cut short by the people around me finishing their own self-review and hearing my frustrated, mild exasperation at how this can even happen anyway? A system or menu like this belongs in Jacob's weird novels and in RPGs, not real-life.

"You alright there Silver guy?" I hear from Hernon, looking at me with a massive and confident smirk.

Well he's happy with himself; he must like his status and funny joke.

"...Silver guy? I did say call each other off hair colour, but that was before I knew this was a thing." I retort with a mild frown, gesturing at my transparent blue box while immediately disliking the prospect of being called 'Silver guy'.

"Well this system says my name is Nori, something. Unfortunately, I don't know how to say my last name so first name only." The lady with white hair says, chuckling a little at my misfortune, before frowning, "Huh, now that I said that I actually know how to say my last name perfectly... This is giving me a headache."

And it shows, as they rub their head a little, somehow perfectly avoiding their new ears.

"Just Nori? Why is your name so simple and to the point when my first names 'Aqzuran'" I say, sagging my shoulders a little, before focusing again, "What about you?" I say off-handedly to the person not contributing much to the conversation.

The green-haired girl is a little taken back, like they were hoping we completely forgot about them, which I almost did.

"...Anima Vitatera." They say quietly, with a little stutter, and without fanfare.

After this, Hernon regains attention in a highly subtle way, by clapping loudly and obnoxiously.

"Alright! I am Hernon Flare and I am going to make the outlandish guess that we we are all elementals too," Putting a little too much emphasis on the Flare. "And I have the element of fire!"

They say, spreading their arms wide dramatically.

Ignoring the cringe, I ask an important question.

"So wait, the system didn't change your name? It just accepts your name as Hernon?" I ask, trying to prob how this system works.

With a face like he didn't even bother questioning this at all, Hernon responds with pure wisdom.

"Huh." They say, shrugging.

"I have the element of frost," Nori says simply, but also putting too much emphasis on the last word for some reason.

Why is everyone acting weird? We don't need to stress how cool our elements are.

Surprisingly, It isn't me that goes next, but Anima. "Oh! I have the element of nature and life, at least I think, it was a little vague." So they say, being the loudest and most enthused I have seen them before they realise they got a little excited and flush furiously.

"O-oh, sorry for interrupting uh-" They start, trying to back peddle.

Hernon thankfully interrupts, "So Silver guy, what about you?" Asking distrustfully, like an interrogation.

"Just your average, run-of-the-mill wind element," I say simply, trying to ignore the frankly rude question.

"Just wind? Huh, why was I worried." Hernon replies, mumbling the last part, before realising something.

"Wait, wind? We have all the elements except water, and if we go by the colour on our clothes I would think you would be water or something" They say, doubtingly.

"I am very proud of my reading skill, thank you, " I say, feigning hurt, "It isn't my fault my systems being funny. So, getting this straight, we are all elementals, we are all immortal which I don't really want to even talk about right now, we all got put together for some unknown reason, and we don't know what happened to earth... There is more, I think, but there is too much happening for me to remember it all." Finishing, bring my hands to my face to go into that signature thinking pose but am stopped when I actually touch my face.

God, even my own body feels weird.

"Your systems being funny?" Hernon inquires, ignoring the bigger and more important questions.

"Look, focus, we are in the middle of nowhere my good friend. Concentrate on useful things if you would." I ask, exasperated but straightforward enough that Hernon gets the hint.

"Fine, well how it normally goes is the person begins in the wilderness, so us right now, and they go on a trip to a town, join the adventurers guild, and go from there," Hernon says looking around the surroundings.

At that, me and Anima share a look.

We definitely are not joining any adventurers guilds.

With the mutual agreement set and a little happy there is at least someone that is somewhat normal, Hernon continues.

"So, first objective is to find a village or something, shelter and all that, but also look out for monsters as those always seem to exist. I vote we head through the plains, maybe towards those mountains over there, should be the safest way to find civilisation." He says, pointing to mountains far in the distance, I must have missed them when I initially looked over the rolling hills as just faintly; now I look, I can see them.

Turning around, he looks at us expectantly, having already taken the leadership role.

I shrug.
