《Megane Saga》Chapter 7 - Human king's crime

I’m in a bad position. The enemy is stronger than me. More than that, I can’t move too far from this place. I need to protect the house.
“Claiomh Solais?” Said the horned man as he observed me from head to toe. “T-these stats, how can it be so low?”
He had a long, jet black hair with white horns sprouting from the back of his head, pointed forward and curved around his head. He wore a black, spiky armor with a red cape connected to the shoulder part. His eyes were black, with golden pupils that glowed as it looked at the sword in my hand.
While he was surprised, I took the initiative and dashed to him. I waved my sword to his neck, and as soon as he deflected it, I raised my sword and swung it downwards. He was able to block it, but my strength was higher so I pushed him away.
As he flew in midair, I continuously sent waved and before he reached the ground I dashed again, while vibrating my sword.
The moment I got closer, I waved my sword to him but it was intercepted by his sword. I closed my eyes at the moment of impact and said. “Claiomh Solais, blinding light!”
My sword emitted light, blinding the horned man for a few seconds letting me retract my sword and wave it to his neck, but even with his eyes closed, he blocked me.
“That’s not gonna work on me.” He said as he pushed me away.
The moment I hit the ground, he was in front of me with his sword moving to me neck. I blocked it with my sword and as we pushed each other, I tried to kick his chin.
He retracted his sword and hit my leg with the hilt, before moving his sword to me again.
With my superior strength, I was able to push him away but before I could run after him, he sent black flames to me. I blocked it by spinning my sword but as the final flame dispersed, he was in front of me again with his sword pointed at me. This guy isn’t giving me a chance to think...
“Your stats doesn’t match your strength, and your weapon, you’re a reincarnator aren’t you?”
“So what? You’re one too right?”
“Yes, and since we’re the same, even if I hate your race, I’ll tell you, don’t listen to what the human king says.”

I pushed him away again but I didn’t follow, since when he regained balance he didn’t attack. He just stood his ground and stared at me.
“Actually, I haven’t decided which side I should take. I would like to hear your side of the story.” I said as I embedded my sword on the ground.
“Looks like you’re more understanding than the rest of your kind.” He said as he sheathed his sword. “Before I start talking, are you sure you don’t want to fight while the rest of your kind is being killed.”
“I can’t get away from this place even if I wanted to and if there’s a way to avoid fighting you, I’ll take it.” This works in my favor, since I’ll definitely lose if the battle continues. My only concern is the Andas, the others could go to hell for all I care...No, I mean Andas’ house, since my things are still there.
GABRANTH’S POV
I’m sure she has an identify gift and since she’s still fighting despite seeing my stats, it’s safe to assume that she’s hiding something else that could let her win. She’s too dangerous, she has a 20 RB weapon with her and I believe she has more gifts other than that. She’s also hiding her stats so I can’t access if I can defeat her.
It doesn’t look like she’s set on making us her enemy, so this is a good time to take care of a big threat such as her. I might get her to our side but the others won’t accept it, so I should at least make her join a neutral side so our race won’t have to fight her. That’s the safest approach.
“What do you think about the war? What did the king tell you about us?”
“He said the demon race wanted to conquer their territory, since the demon race thinks the humans are easy prey.”
“Yes, they are an easy prey. I alone could conquer the human country. Don’t you think it’s odd that the demon race hasn’t conquered this country yet?”
“I can see that you have the strength, and I do agree that it is odd. So, why are they at war? Why are you attacking? If you’re attacking now, then does that mean you’re planning to conquer this country now?
“The reason I’m attacking now is to kill the heroes that they’ve summoned, do not worry, I do not plan to kill you. And for the first question, we are not at war, we’re merely making them suffer for their crime.”

“I see, then what is this crime you are talking about?”
“The current king of the humans was the one who united this country. He waged war against small human countries and took them all under his wing. He thought he could do the same with our country and tried to conquer it.
At first he was able to get a few cities, but we didn’t retaliate since the current demon lord at that time didn’t want war. The demon lord tried to change the mind of the human king, but he thought we were afraid of him and continued his conquest.
The demons’ rage was starting to get stronger and stronger, and the demon lord lost hope of ever changing the human king’s mind. The demon lord ordered his army to take back our land and protect it, but only that. He didn’t want to conquer the lands of the human.
The human king was pushed back, but he continued his assault. The small war continued for years and not wanting to see more demons die, the demon lord went to the human king himself and put a stop to it, but that lead to his death.
He was welcomed by the human king, but he didn’t know, we all didn’t know, that the human king has summoned heroes. The demon lord only wanted peace, but he died trying to achieve it. He was killed by the heroes that were summoned, but he also took their lives with him.
The demon lord’s brother war enraged, every single demon were enraged, even I wanted to blow the whole country to bits. The demon lord’s brother took his place and stopped everyone from starting a war, but not for peace, he wanted to humans to live their life suffering from their sins.
We have already taken 75% of the whole country and we’re making it as slow as we could to slowly instill fear in their hearts.”
Remembering what they did to lord Marda is making me angry again.
SHIZUKA’S POV
So that’s the story, but if that’s the case, instead of being neutral, shouldn’t I ally myself with the demons? I guess they don’t need my help since they have this guy, so where should I go now? Elven or beastmen country?
I’m sure I can believe in his story, since I could feel every emotion he had as he told the story and seeing him enraged just from telling it, I’m sure he said no lie.
“What do you plan now? Will you side with the humans or not?”
“No, I don’t plan on helping this country. You can do as you please here.” The one at fault is the human king and his army, the citizens are innocent, but that won’t change the hatred of the demons. Making them see that not all humans are bad would be troublesome, so I’ll refrain from involving myself. I’m not a hero anyway...
“You can kill everyone, but can I ask for one exception?”
“If letting one human live would stop you from becoming our enemy, then yes.”
“Well then, you better tell the other demons not to attack us while we’re moving out of the city.” I said while going back to Andas’ house. To think I’ll survive and take Andas away from here, I’m in luck.
As I entered, I saw Andas holding a stick and shaking from fear. Once he saw me, he dropped the stick and ran to me.
“Shizuka, you’re safe.” He said while hugging me.
“Andas, pack your things quickly, we need to get out of this city.”
“Huh?”
“Hurry! Before the demons change their minds.”
“W-what ar-“
“I sold half of my life span to them so they will let us get out of the city.” Well, if he knew the real story he would hate me, so I’ll lie a bit. Not like he would know right?
After packing a few things, we ran out of the city and not even one demon attacked us. We ran, and ran as far as Andas could and as I looked back, the whole city was burning.
Sorry, I only save those that I want to save. Well, even if I wanted to, I can’t handle all of those demons with my current level. Blame your king for incurring the wrath of the demons.

This concept of the book came about from having two mild heart attacks and the regrets of not being more active in my younger life. Note: The cover of the book is from a painting of Richard the Lionheart at the Battle of Arsuf (1191) during the Third Crusade where he defeated Saladin. Painting by Gustave Doré (19th century).
