"DAD!!"
-
"Ah! Ah! Father!" Keiichi yelled, breathing heavily.
"You already have the answer to your question, boy." Yato said.
"Uh?! What's going on?! Was I dreaming?!" Keiichi looked around and realized he was in his room. He thought that everything that had happened was a dream; however, the sensations were very real.
"No, you weren't dreaming. I transferred your 'spirit' to the day your parents were murdered. Now you know the truth." Yato replied. Yato also made it impossible for Keiichi to interfere, so he couldn't do magic right now.
"!!!"
"Why couldn't I do magic?! I could save them. Explain to me!!" Keiichi exclaimed. He not only tried to attack the mystery man with physical attacks, he also tried to use magic; however, his attempts were flawed. He couldn't do anything about that situation.
"Did I learn all that for nothing?..." He clenched his fists in anger. Tears began to run down his face.
"Everything you learn will be useful in your life. Your parents were taken from you because you were too weak to protect them."
…
"Don't you want revenge? Or will you keep crying here?" Yato already knew what decision Keiichi would make, so he decided to help him with that.
"Tell me… who was that guy?! I'm going to kill him!!" He swore he would find out who the person who killed his parents was. He would also find out who planned all this. The only thing he was sure of was that a large family was involved in this.
"Don't act rashly. You don't even know if you can kill him."
"This…" Keiichi wasn't sure if he could kill that man. He had just acquired his powers and could only use Hell Flame for a little longer.

"Well, you have the system. Just get stronger. I'll help you with some tips."
"Tips? Why don't you tell me everything I want to know?"
"Do you think my favors are easy to get? You can try to find everything yourself if you want." Yato wouldn't reveal complete information to Keiichi.
"Tch! You're petty!"
"300 points."
"Isn't that stealing?... How can a tip cost so much?!" Keiichi never understood Yato's pricing criteria when charging favors.
"Moments, moments. I'm a fickle guy, you know." Yato said, with a playful smile.
Keiichi shook his head helplessly. Yato was the only person who could help him, so he had to put up with his pranks.
*Sigh!*
"I'm going to sleep… get out of my room!" Keiichi felt too tired. Seeing his parents dying in front of him left his mind very shaken. He just wanted to rest and forget all about it for a moment.
"Good rest." Yato said, before disappearing.
"...You really are a fickle guy." Keiichi lay down on his bed and closed his eyes. It would probably take him a long time to sleep. The images of his parents being murdered didn't come out of his head.
"Father, mother… I swear I will avenge you."
-
"Master, won't that boy be traumatized?" Yerin asked. She already knew about Keiichi's past. Keiichi was already mentally unstable before getting the system, now that he saw his parents die in front of him, he could end up losing his sanity.
"Don't worry, that boy is stronger than you think. I'm sure he'll get over it." Yato wouldn't show Keiichi how his parents were killed if it would cause him too much trauma. He also knew that Keiichi had very good willpower.

"Well if you say so." Yerin did not prolong the subject any longer.
"Master, it seems there is some conflict between the Kraligians and Levinianks. This is a good time for them to meet other races." Yerin said.
The Kraligians are a race with advanced technology in this universe. They often travel to other planetary systems in order to take possession of resource-rich planets. Levinianks are a race with advanced technology as well; however, their technology was not built for their species. Levinianks enslave other races and steal their technology. They are not very smart, but they have a lot of combat power.
"You're right; however, they are not ready yet. Wait a little longer." Keiichi and Sakura were still too weak to perform any interesting missions. However, with the help of the system, they could grow faster.
"Good." Yerin turned into a cat and lay down on Yato's lap. Yato smiled at her behavior.
'How cute can you be?'

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx. God complex
A hero is summoned to another world, vanquishes evil, yadda yadda, saves the kingdom and lives happily ever after. There is no such hero in this story. Just a desperate youth with great ambition and very little to lose. A zero to hero style story set in a country clearly inspired by modern USA with just as many issues and the minority of mages often pulling strings from the shadows. I am also hoping the whole thing won't turn out edgy enough to cut me. I want to rely on actual good writing rather than cheap powertrip gimmicks. edit: Please don't mind Zetari's salty review. He is quite literally making up any use of the torture and human experimentation trope and says MC is blank after 4 chapters where he conveniently stops reading just at the start of his first character development. For extra entertainment, I will be uploading chapters two at a time and compose a relevant poem through the chapter names. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
