《The Reborn: Book One》Chapter Seven: Into the Unknown

As Chance and Sage entered the mine, they were hit with a strange odor. Sage covered her nose right away. “What the hell?” She grumbled under her palm. Chance coughed a bit before covering his face.

The two continued into the mines; eventually, Chance let his hand down and gave their surroundings a proper look. It looks normal so far. Nothing but tracks and rock. What does a goblin look like anyway? Chance let his mind wonder until it became too dark to see. “Sage, do you have a light?” Chance asked, looking back. “No. But since people used to work here, I figure we will come across light at some point. Just stay close.” Sage took two steps forward and placed her hand on Chance.

Chance led them further into the mine before having to stop. There was light up ahead. It was faint from where they were standing, but there was no denying something or someone was up ahead.

“How do you want to handle this?” Sage asked. “We are going to walk in.” Chance whispered. “Okay. I hope that doesn't backfire. We should sneak first and make sure whatever is up there is actually hostile.” Sage whispered back. Chance gave her an approving nod. The two crouched down and began to sneak forward.

-

Sage was having a hard time being sneaky. She had to move much slower than Chance just to stop kicking pebbles. Once Chance got closer to the light, he gave the area a once over and shook his head. “Sage, they're all dead; you can stop sneaking now.” He said as he stood up and walked into the large room. Bodies covered the floor as far as Chance could see. At least ten people looked to have been slaughtered. They're clearly workers. Chance thought as he stepped closer to each of the corpses.

Sage passed him to look at the lamps, “Chance, this had to have been recent. The lamps have plenty of juice left in them.” She said before moving to examine the corpses. It looks like they were torn apart by some jagged object. Likely a blade. Sage turned a corpse over and rummaged through its pockets.

“Find anything useful?” Chance asked as he walked to a corridor; he placed his hand on the rope and looked down. “This is likely how they got up and down. If I had to guess, a platform was here at some point.” He announced. Sage looked up, “The bodies have been stripped clean. Whatever killed them probably took their stuff.”

“So these goblin things are a real problem.” Chance frowned. “We are going to have to head down if we want to find them.” He turned back to Sage. Is this really a good idea? Sage thought. When she saw Chance eyeballing her, she gave him a half-smile. “Do you think we can handle this?”

“I do.” Chance turned back to the rope. “I think we will handle this just fine; after that, we will return back to town, and everything will go off without a hitch.” I hope. “Now come on! We have some goblins to slay!”

-

Chance was not expecting to land right on top of the goblins, nor was he expecting them to be so ugly. Sage screamed as she followed him down the rope; when she hit the ground, she let out a soft groan before snapping to attention.

Standing before them were short green things. Their long noses made them look sinister, and their body proportions sent Chances mind spinning. “God, they're naked!” Sage shouted as she took her trident and held it, pointing to the goblins. Chance was still speechless.

Two goblins rose quickly and charged Chance and Sage. Sage moved quickly and swung the trident, knocking one of the goblins to the left. Chance blinked and drew his club, “You have to stab them with it!” He shouted at Sage before rushing at the running goblin. Chance swung the club-wide and knocked the goblin to the right. Sage winched when she heard the goblins head hit the wall.

She turned to the goblin who was getting up and plunged the trident into its stomach. The blood shocked her; it wasn't red. She watched as the blue liquid began to pool around the creature. She was caught off guard when a chair hit the side of her head.

Chance spun quickly, “Sage!” He called. He gave his goblin one last hit before rushing to her aid. He swung his leg back and gave the creature tossing chairs a hard kick without thinking. The goblin flew up into the air and hit the wall with a thud. “I'm fine!” Sage put her hand on the side of her head. The final goblin slid down the wall and hit the floor. Chance gave its head a few good wacks for good measure.

-

“Are you sure you're okay?” Chance turned back to Sage. She gave him a nod but didn’t move her hand. What the hell. Sage closed her eyes and stood still for a moment. “You're bleeding.” Chance said as he turned Sage to face him. “I’m fine really, I was just a little stunned. Thank you for killing the creature.” She mumbled.

“I think we finished the quest. But it looks like there are other doors. Do you want to head back up or continue on?” Chance asked; he didn’t want to drag Sage forward if she wasn't feeling up to it. That really hurt. My head really hurts. Sage stood there thinking before moving her hand to dab at the cut. “We should continue forward. Who knows what we might find?” Sage gave Chance a small smile. I really want to find some good loot, anyway.
