《A Fool's Wish》Chapter 4 Page 8 - Intruder

Akilah got up to investigate what it was that had approached the surrounding area. Although Akilah had put up a protection spell that made their house invisible to unwanted guests, whether that be people or animals. She had also placed sensory alarms in the surrounding aera of their house, so that they would be notified if anyone or anything approached them. Akilah had also put out animals in the area surveillance, so that they could monitor the intruder through their eyes and ears. Everything the animals saw and heard was shown in a hologram like magical device that Akilah had made, this is one of the first magical devices she had learned to make while she was working as a henchman.
On previous occasions where the alarm had been set off it was because of animals; but this time it was different; this time it was a human that had set of their alarm. The intruder was Rae, the little girl that Akilah saved ‘But what is she doing here’ Akilah wondered. Rae started yelling, Akilah couldn’t hear what she was saying and switched to another animals closer by, then she heard it, the girl was calling out their names. Akilah was taken back by this ‘Why is she calling out for us here…How did she even know that lived here’ and with that Akilah turned her gaze over to Adara, looking visibly guilty.
“Adara, you didn’t?” Akilah asked exasperated and pointing at the magical hologram.
Adara grimaced and looked at her with a look of shame ‘I-It just came up while in conversation”
“ADARA!!” Akilah yelled out
“No, no listen, she just asked why we were there in the woods, and so I just replied that we were going home, and just vaguely pointed up towards the direction we were going before we heard them”

Adara trying to explain her actions but Akilah just became more infuriated with each word she spoke.
“ADARA, WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT WHEN I’VE GONE THROUGH ALL THIS TROUBLE TO HIDE US?” Akilah yelled out in anger.
Adara backed away “Listen okay” she said in a calming tone, trying not to agitate Akilah even more “I didn’t actually think that she would ever come here”
Akilah let out a deep sigh, regained her composure and answered in a calmer tone.
“Well she has” Akilah said irritated “What if she’s a spy? What if she was sent by the king, huh? What if she’s a magician?”
“Well she clearly is not, Aki” Adara replied calmly.
“How do you know that?” Akilah asked, still sounding irritated.
“Because if she were, you wouldn’t have saved her!” Adara replied while letting out a sign “Listen Aki we don’t know what happened or why she’s even here calling for us.”
“So, what are you suggesting?” Akilah asked with an attitude.
“So…I’m saying we to out and ask her why she’s here and-” Adara replied with pleading eyes.
Akilah let’s out yet another exasperated sigh, and rubs her temples “And you want to go out and ask her, right?”
“…yes”
Akilah considered her options ‘I could just leave the girl alone and pretend like this never happened, but Adara would never allow’. She could just put a spell on Adara and make her forget all about the girl, but that would still leave the problem of the girl wondering around in the woods calling their names. She also can’t just put a forgetting spell on the girl since she doesn’t know how that will impact the whole situation. Which leaves her with her most dreaded option; Adara’s option, going out and asking the girl what she wants.

Akilah groaned, walked towards the front door then looked back at Adara “Fine, we’ll do it your way”

Alex and Julius, a pair of brothers, try their best to make it in a North America reshaped by an eldritch apocalypse. “Stop right there Philip!” Julius interrupted, the vein on his temple starting to throb. “I do not want to hear another simile about what magic is. I have had magic explained to me by three cult leaders, a wizard, and a cannibal. I've heard that magic is like a rainbow, all its parts blending together. The human unconsciousness, powerful and unknowable. A body, you don't want to eat the heart straight away. I am sick and tired of people telling me what magic is. I know damn well what it is.” He drew a breath, interrupting his rant. “Magic is a bad joke. A whole lot of setup, for some nonsense punchline. This whole god-damned apocalypse is an eldritch comedy.”
