《A Fool's Wish》Chapter 1 Page 6 - Murderer

Akilah sat on the corner of the bed, she leaned her body against the wall, putting her in a position where she’s facing the door. Akilah did not completely back into the wall behind her, leaving a gap where she hid the knife in her hand. Her plan was to fake being asleep, get the person to put their guard down and then attack.
Akilah could hear from the footsteps there were two people, coming closer and closer, while simultaneously her heartbeat started beating faster and faster. She had not expected two people, 'What will I do now? Will my plan work?'. The footsteps stopped in front of the door and she heard the keys shifting inside; and the door opened.
Akilah could hear the footsteps abruptly stopping; they said something in a foreign language that Akilah could not understand. She slightly opened one of her eyes enough that she could somewhat see. There were two men, one in what looked like to be some sort of uniform and the other one in old, ragged clothing. She assumed that the uniformed man was a guard and the other one a prisoner.
The guard looked at her with shock and confusion, as if he were looking at an anomaly. He said something to the prisoner and the prisoner shook his head, the guard’s eyes darted back and forth between Akilah and the prisoner, as though he was deciding on something. The guard pushed the prisoner forward towards the floor, making him land on his hands and knees, then quickly closed the door and left.
Akilah could hear his hurried footsteps going back 'Yes that's right LEAVE' she thought to herself. 'You just helped me carry out my plan'. Meanwhile the prisoner had gotten up, dusted himself off and was now looking intensely at Akilah.

'Damn it' Akilah thought, from what she could see the odds were stacked against her. The man seemed to be in his mid-thirties and with an average build. 'He might not be strong against another man seeing how the guard could easily push him down, but against me...' Akilah could feel the sweat dripping down her neck 'I just have to take him by surprise, that's my only option'.
The man had slowly crept closer to her, quietly as to not wake her up. Soon he stood over the bed looking down at Akilah, he looked at the door then back at her, and then smirked. Akilah did not like the look on his face, he did not look like a man with good intentions. 'Calm down Akilah, you have to strike at the perfect moment' she thought while tightening her grip on the knife.
The man came closer and leaned over Akilah, putting one hand on the edge of the bed and the other coming closer to touch her face. Right when he touched her face Akilah opened her eyes, looked at the man that was now visibly taken back; and before he had any time to process what happened, Akilah took her chance and pulled out the knife.
*slice*
Akilah had aimed for his Adam's apple but since he had managed to move back a bit, she had instead cut his throat right above his collarbones. The cut was not deep enough to kill him, but it did leave him on the floor desperately holding his throat in an attempt to stop the bleeding.
Akilah could not allow him to have time to recover, this was her chance, she could not mess this up. She pounced on him slicing and stabbing him with all her might. When Akilah had finally stopped, she was standing on top of a limp man in a pool of his own blood. She had done it. She had killed a man.

“DID YOU SEE THAT!?!” Akilah shouted out “I DID IT, I KILLED HIM!!”
But nothing happened, Akilah looked around desperately 'Why isn't anything happening? Where is the fog from last time? Why didn't he appear again?'.
Akilah could slowly feel the anxiety building in her stomach.
“WE HAD A DEAL!” She shouted desperately. “YOU CAN'T JUST ABANDON ME LIKE THIS!!"

How the Stars Turned Red
Announcement as of 05 July 2022: I've been diagnosed with some pretty severe nerve damage in my left arm, rendering me unable to write effectively, and as such this story is on hold until it is healed. I am so sorry, and I promise to get back to writing as soon as possible. In the latter half of the 3rd millennium CE, humanity has spread across the stars, inhabiting close to five-hundred worlds across the Orion Arm. Earth has become irrelevant, a historical has-been. The galactic map is dominated by two mega-factions, both controlling vast amounts of territories either through direct control or through their many allies and treaty signatories. The Kingdom of Aurora is the political and economic hegemon despite consisting of only seven inhabited worlds; their strength lies in the Royal Union, an interstellar commonwealth composing an internal market and a common defence pact. These member worlds are myriad and varied, culturally as well as politically, but they all flock to the same banner. The Independent Systems Alliance, spearheaded by the Republic of Elysium, is the ascendant challenger to Aurora and the Union. A pseudo-federal multi-system polity, the Alliance economy and military is rapidly expanding, but at the cost of effective democratic and meritocratic involvement by its people. However, with two superpowers as this, chafing along a common border, and with a constant clamour of polemics, both sides have become convinced the other is constantly preparing for war and are on the look-out for any perceived weakness in their opponent. The predictable result is a huge arms race and a cold war spreading across the stars, requiring only a spark to set the galaxy aflame. Drawn into this game of high stakes are ordinary men and women, their peaceful lives, hopes, and aspirations swallowed by the vortex of conflict and distrust. This is their story. Cover art by Rhodex Designs (FB). Hope you like long chapters and adjectives. Note: English is not my first language. Another story set in the same universe, written by a good friend
