《Immutable》Chapter 5

“What do you mean?” Genie asked. “They said that they fixed it.”

“I know, but we don't know anything about these people, or this Galactic System. Sure they stopped the rip in Space-Time from destroying everything, but other than that, we don't know what they expect from us.

“We don't know how their civilization is run, if they are mostly peaceful, or at war with someone else. We know absolutely nothing,” he says. “I’m not saying to start panicking or anything, just be wary of their intentions, until we know more.”

“Ok Jeremy, I understand. Do we go to school like normal?”

“I need to talk to the administrators, I had at least 6 months left on my internship, but it's all gone now.”

A few hours later, after going to the Administration of the University, he learned that since he was in the research and testing part of his education, they would have to find another internship for him, or arrange some lab time.

But, everything was already full with other students, so he was kind of in limbo, until something opened up for him.

After spending a few more hours scouring the forums for information about the System, he learned that people are starting to get skills for their everyday actions, like doing their jobs, or yard work, hobbies etc..

Most people found that if it was something they had been doing for a long time, the skill started at a relatively high level.

Most higher level skills were in the 40s at the upper end, which led to speculation that the level cap was at either 50 or 100. Nobody could confirm either, as there hadn't been a skill that high, reported yet.

All this new information left him wondering, just what kind of influence did the system have over people's bodies? Could it just read the information already there, or could it alter them in some way?

Since Genie had left already, he figured it was time to test some things. He knew that he had gained a plethora of different skills over his long life, mastering most of them. So he wondered what levels the System would register his skills at.

Since he already had the things he needed, he figured he would start with something simple. He took a plant pot, and some potting soil. He had a few different flower and vegetable seeds, so he decided to go with some tomatoes, and planted them in the pot.

As soon as he was done watering it he got a System message.

Congratulations

You have gained the skill Horticulture

Skill: Horticulture - Level 68

“Level 68?” he mumbled to himself, “I’ve been growing things for thousands of years. What do I have to do to get to level 100?”

Next he started practicing martial arts, going through the various forms he learned over the years. After going through everything he knew once he got another notification.

Congratulations

You have gained the skill Martial Arts

Skill: Martial Arts - Level 81

“Ok now that's a little better. I know I haven't mastered the martial arts yet, but I thought I had learned everything about farming and growing plants there was to learn. Maybe there is more to learn in another world, and the system counts knowledge everywhere,” he wondered.

“I think that's enough for now, I don't really care about skills unless I learn that they actually have an effect on a person. I'm not going to worry about getting anymore just yet.”

After that was decided, and with nothing left to do, he decided to take a trip back to his cabin in North Dakota. When all else fails, it's time to go back to what he knows well, hunting.

As he pulls up to his house, he takes a deep breath and lets it out. “Ahh, it's good to be back. I never really notice how crowded cities are until I'm away from it all. Humans congregating together is a wonderful experience, but sometimes it is just too much.”

Putting his things away, he grabs his bow, an old handmade one that he made years ago. It has been well taken care of so it's still in good repair. After he grabs a quiver full, he heads out into the woods.

He isn't actively hunting , just enjoying the walk through nature. Getting back to his roots. After he had been walking for a few hours, just taking in the scenery, he spotted a large buck just ahead a little ways. Feeling pretty hungry after his walk he decides he wants some venison, and he also figured he would take some steaks back to Genie.

He tests the wind to see which way it's blowing and crouches down to line up a steady shot. He pulls back on the string , breathing slowly, waits for the right moment and releases. It hits right in the heart, the buck jumps once then collapses dead.

Before he can go to it, he gets a system announcement.

Congratulations

You have gained the skill Archery

Skill: Archery - Level 97

“Sigh, I should have expected that.”
