《Immutable》Chapter 2

After getting a lakefront apartment a few miles north of the campus, Jeremy then proceeded to go to the campus and register for classes. As he got there he marvels at the architecture, it had been described as Victorian Gothic, but seeing it in person was different from pictures.
To him, it seemed like a mix between a castle and a cathedral. It was big, at least it seemed that way, for this huge complex of buildings to be right in urban sprawl. And on the inside of the square of buildings, it was very green, something u would expect to see at a park, which technically was Hyde Park, so it seemed when you were inside the square that you were not in a city, but a wooded area instead.
As he is lining up to register, he spots his old assistant Genevieve and acts like he does not know her because that would blow his cover, but she notices him.
"Jeremy!!" she calls out as she jogs over.
"Yes?" he replies. "Can I help you?"
"Oh, wow, you look just like my old boss, and you have the same name."
Being that the world was a lot more connected than it had been in the past, he had already thought about this exact type of situation, of someone he knew from his past identity recognizing him.
"Hi, umm, I have an uncle that everyone says I am a younger twin of, actually that's who I was named after."
Oh, is he an archaeologist?"
"Yep, that would be him, you say you used to work for him?"
"Yes, I did," she replies, a little disappointed.
"So, are you signing up for classes?" she asks.
"Yep, I'm taking classes for particle physics, after hearing about what they are doing in Switzerland with the Hadron Collider, I got extremely interested in how the universe works, so I want to learn more, and maybe one day make some discoveries of my own."

In truth, this seemed to him to be the first time in his long life, that he might somehow get closer to finding out why he is immortal, and always comes back, even if his body is burned to ashes. It seems like learning the secrets of reality may hold the key to knowing what is at play with his body
"Oh wow!" she says looking impressed. "That is some serious high-level science. And your uncle is an accomplished archaeologist, smarts must run in the family. Heh."
"Maybe. Most of my family has a degree or two, and they do alright for themselves." he says with a chuckle.
As they finish talking Jeremy's turn to register is up.
"Ok, well I better get back to my line to register, my name is Genevieve by the way, but my friends call me Genie."
"It was nice to meet you Genie, I will tell my uncle I met you next time I talk to him," he says with a smile.
"See Ya around," she says with a wave and turns around and jogs back to her line.
After getting all his classes sorted, he decided it was time for lunch, so he headed to the campus cafeteria. After getting his found and finding a seat, he could hear a person approaching behind him. "Mind if I sit here?"
"Oh, Genie, not at all, have a seat." he smiles at her.
"So, what are you here for?"
"I already go my bachelors in Anthropology, so after I had gotten some real-world experience with your uncle, I have decided to get my masters, and after that, I figured I will see what's available then and decide if I want to find work, or continue with getting a doctorate."

"Oh, nice. I am sure you will do well," he says encouragingly. "So, how was it working with my uncle?" He asked, laughing inside at himself.
"Oh, it was great! He knows his stuff. I mean, we mostly worked on dinosaur fossils, but sometimes we would work at an ancient civilization dig, and as we found stuff, he would describe what different things were and what they were used for. Having specialized in fossils, he really knew about ancient people. Sometimes the way he described them, you could almost believe he had been there."
After laughing inside at himself once more, he says. "Yeah, he really gets into things that interest him. I have been told I am the same. Like a dog with a bone, we tend to try to learn everything there is to know about our current interests.”
I know it is too early to say with any confidence, but I hope to be someone who has major contributions, to the field of particle physics. I mean it's basically the building blocks of reality, if we can unlock them, then who knows what we as humans can accomplish."
"Wow, you seem to be really passionate," she says with a big smile on her face. "I hope you will be able to accomplish that, if you are anything like your uncle, I have the feeling you will make great contributions to any field you choose to pursue."
"Oh thanks," he says, feeling slightly embarrassed. He did not realize he had let so much of his passion for learning about new things leak out.
"Oh!" Genie says, looking like she just remembered something. "Are you taking any electives?"
"Yes, I am taking art. I love to draw and paint, so I figured I might as well learn new information and techniques."
"Great!" Genie says with another big smile. "Maybe we have it at the same time."
"Let's see," he says pulling out his schedule. "Thursday at 3." He tells her, as she does the same.
"Me too. It's good to have a class with someone I already know a little."
"Alright," he says while standing up "I'll see you in class."
"Yep." she smiles and waves. "See you later."
As he walks off, he wonders if he will get to know a different Genie than he knew as her boss, one that is more relaxed, and a peer instead of an employee. "I love starting a new life, it's always exciting." He thinks while leaving the cafeteria.

But when his squad is tasked with conducting a routine patrol deep in enemy territory, everything goes to nine kinds of hell, and he quickly sees his chances at survival slipping away. When the radio operators start to pick up some funky, dirty ol’ blues all the way out in the backcountry, it’s a nice change of pace. At least until the men in Yancy’s squad start losing their minds, turning on each other with murderous intent as the music works its deadly power within them. Convinced it’s some kind of new psychological warfare initiative, the squad leader forces the men to push deeper and deeper into the Vietnamese jungle, obsessed with locating the music’s source. What they find, however, isn’t some new technology, but an ancient spirit awoken by the terrible war. Even worse, the music is changing Yancy too, awakening something buried inside of him. Only one thing is certain, nothing is ever going to be the same.See how it all began … *** PRAISE FOR SIREN SONG:Hunter's writing is as low-down, gritty, and insidious as the blues Yancy Lazarus loves.
