《Immutable》Chapter 1

Jeremy Hall stood up from his crouch and stretched his back. He was bent over a dig site cleaning some potential fossils, delicately so as not to damage anything. As he stood up, he looked around, taking in the sight of people working on their sites.

This is what he enjoyed, being away from crowds, and working to find out the secrets of a time before people. Ever since he had found out that there were giant creatures that had lived millions of years ago, he had become fascinated, because he had lived for so long, and had experienced so much, but this was something he had never, and would never experience.

It was kind of a novelty to have something from history cause the same wonder for him, that human history did for others.

As he looked around at the dry dirt, and scrub grass of this part of North Dakota, he decided he would get a place here to live. It was remote enough to suit him, and he hadn't lived in this part of the country before coming to this dig site.

"Dr. Hall!" Came a yell from Jeremy's assistant Genvieve.

"Genie, I told you to call me Jeremy, or Mr. Hall if you feel the need to be formal," he replied, seemingly having said it many times before.

"I know, I know," she said. "Look, I came to tell you that we don't have any more projects at the moment, I called everyone we know, and there aren't any more digs available right now. I guess it's vacation time!!" she exclaimed excitedly.

"Huh," he mumbles distractedly. "This site is all but finished, I can't think of anyone I'm sure you haven't already asked. I guess I'll take a break for a little while," he says, already making plans to go hunting.

"Do you want to go on a vacation together?" Genie asks while her cheeks turn a little red.

"Oh, no thanks. I have some ideas already, plus I don't want to be an old guy, around your friends, it might make them a little uncomfortable, and ruin their fun. Thanks though," he replies with a smile.

"Ok"

"Oh, but don't worry, I'm sure I will need an assistant with whatever my next endeavor will be, and you have been the best I have had, so you will have a job," he says reassuringly.

"Great," she replies, happy again.

2 Years Later

"Ahhh, Coffee, one of the greatest modern discoveries of the world," Jeremy sighs as he sits on the porch overlooking his land. "Now to find something else to do, it's about time to get back into society."

As he sits and drinks his coffee he thinks back on all he has seen and done over his very long life. One thing that has made his journey through time bearable is learning new things. Throughout history, he has traveled the world learning from different civilizations of their culture and skills.

From learning the sword techniques of the Europeans and Arabs to hearing about the unarmed Martial arts of Asia and learning from them, after living there a long time and finally gaining their trust. There was always something new to learn.

After a few hours of surfing the Internet, he may be ancient, but with all the information of the world at your fingertips, why would you not, he finally found something interesting. He read about a giant thing they had built in Switzerland called The Large Hadron Collider, so he started to look into particle physics and was fascinated.

This kind of stuff was way beyond anything he had ever learned before. So he started looking into schools to get into. He also went about setting up a new I.D., and because he was starting a new field he decided to keep the same name.

He also wouldn't have any trouble getting into a school, because over his long life he had amassed a substantial amount of wealth, so he could pay for a spot in any college he wanted to attend. When he had first stopped aging he had been about 18 but looked in his 20s because in ancient times, the hard life aged you a lot quicker, so when he shaved and didn't add grey to his hair, he looked just like a college student, so that wasn't an issue.

After a few phone calls, and some donations to the right people, he had a spot for the next semester at the University of Chicago. It had been years since he had gone to school, having gotten his Ph.D. in Archeology about 15 years before, so he was quite looking forward to the experience.
