Chapter 3: A Memory Worth Having

The smell was so strong that I was losing it. I aimlessly follow it as the smell filled my thoughts. The delicious blood, the mouth-watering flesh, it was making my mind go crazy. Wanting to arrive quicker, my legs moved faster and soon enough, I was speed walking towards the smell. As I arrive, I notice a lot of zombies were roaming another store. Approaching it quicly noticing this one was a bit different. There's a metal covering the glass window.

Gate? Sudden memory came with a flashback of me pushing up a metal gate. It's used to protect a store from any outside unwanted entry.

"Get away from her!" A voice resonates in my ears and I could hear like it's right next to me. I turn to my side but no one was there. A voice I never heard before. It was so loud that I covered both my ears as it kept shouting, "Run Bibi! Run!"

Even with both my hands covering my ears, the voice was still loud enough. My hunger was going crazy making me lose my mind. Without knowing, I ran for the first time. My mind didn't think of anything except finding the smell and silencing the one who's making so much sound. I quickly arrive at the gate and I notice a shopping cart was lodged under the gate lifting it high enough for me to crawl through.

I quickly got on the ground and remembering how some zombies crawled, I follow the same motion as I shimmy my way in. The smell of blood was lingering in the air like an expensive cologne. Standing straight up, I see three zombies huddled around a man who was screaming in pain as they rip parts of him bit by bit. A zombie got his jaws clamped on one his arms while one was too busy ripping his nose of. The man's screams were making me go crazy as he struggles to get the three zombies off him. He emits delicious odor but, something else was a lot stronger and it wasn't coming from him. I follow the smell with my nose and trace it towards a counter next to them.

When I was about to make a move, another zombie came in from a broken window and I see him ignore the dying man as he approaches the counter. The man was able to break free for a second but instead of running away, he used his body as a barricade shielding whoever is behind the counter putting himself between the zombies and the counter. They quickly got to work biting him right in the shoulder near the neck ripping off a chunck as the man screams in agony. The expressions he made were in terror but he never moved letting the zombies feast on his flesh while he stood his ground.

"Bibi! Run!" He shouts again as was eaten alive.

"Brother!" Another voice echoed in my ears. I walk around behind the shelves trying to inch closer to the counter and steal the food under their noses. I silently arrive at the other side of the counter and the strong delicious smell was emitting from behind. I launch both my arms grabbing whoever is hiding underneath and pulling it straight up towards me.

It was a tiny human and her screams was loud enough to almost made me drop her to cover my ears. She thrashed around trying to break free and all I wanted to do was bite her into silence. My mind was going blank and I was starting to lose my sanity as I inch my mouth closer towards her neck.

"Bibi! No! Get away from my little sister!" The human meat shield turned to come after me only to be pinned down as the zombies pile on top of him while biting him in the process.

Little sister? All of a sudden, a barrage of memories came into my mind making me drop whoever I was holding and giving her a chance to flee. There were so many images that it brought me to my knees as I felt my head was going to explode. For the first time, I was able to make an expression of pain. I saw a little girl who was about to be bitten by a zombie in my flashbacks. All of a sudden, an arm punched the zombie causing it to stumble to the ground. It was my arms, I was watching my memory from the first-person point of view. I remember grabbing the little girl pushing her up a window as four females from the other side pull her to safety.

As I was trying to get up, the same zombie I punched earlier got ahold of my leg and sank his teeth at my calves. I felt it ripped through my skin as I scream in pain. I kicked at the zombie's head making it fall back. But, his bite was strong enough to rip a chunck off. I gave up on exiting through the window and went back down into the basement. I grab a bowling ball and proceeded to bash the zombie till his head was completely mushed.

I remember falling to the ground feeling lathargic and feverish in an instant. I see a door partially break and zombies tried to reach in but couldn't get through. I look up the small window watching the three girls holding back an older one who was trying to get back in through the small window. The little girl looks distraught as the water came out of her eyes screaming something I couldn't understand. I remember reaching for the window to give her a thumbs up and suddenly the flashback stopped and I was brought back to reality.

Sister? My little sister. My mind was going crazy. I remember I had a little sister and I saved her. Or, was it my little sister? it was confusing and I didn't know if it was my memory or someone else. I didn't recognize anyone from the memory including the little girl.

All of a sudden, a sharp piercing scream echoed in my ears. I turn my head from the direction of the scream and I see a little girl trying her best to get away as a zombie bites her bag. The little girl looks terrfied while shouting, "Brother! Stop it's me!"

The one who was protecting her a few moments ago is now attacking her gnawing on her bag. His skin was as pale as mine and black veins appeared around his body. The other four zombies slowly closing in on her and I quickly lunge myself grabbing her by the shirt while I used my fist to punch her brother away. Same thing I did in my memory. I put myself between the zombies and the little girl and she was too terrified to move as she peed her pants in fear. They ignored me trying to get ahold of the little girl behind me and I tried my best to hold them all back.

I kept punching and punching since it's the only thing I know how to do based on my recent memory. Without any luck in driving them away, I drag the little girl further away from them, and luckily, these zombies move really slow. I looked around for something to grab and I saw a stick that gave me more memories.

A bat! A baseball bat was laying on the ground where the brother initially was and I knew that it was a can be a weapon. I grab it but, I had no idea how to use it. I just knew what it was. I tried to push a zombie that's getting close to us but it didn't do anything as he came right back.

"Swing it!" The little girl behind me points at the zombie and her words brought more memory.

Learning how to swing, I brought the bat towards the zombie's head decapitating it in an instant. Seeing his head rips off from the neck was exhilirating. The sound of it's skin ripping was music to my ears and I felt excited. Blood squirts out the veins that was ones connecting its head to it's body. The body drop on it's knees before completely plopping onto the ground. His head flew towards a window and igetting stuck right in the midle of the glasss as cracks form around it. The side where I hit it with the baseball bat was dented in making his face hard to identify. Another zombie got close and I kept swinging at the others dropping one after another. When I was about to hit the brother to bash his brains in, I feel small arms wrap around me. I look down and I see tiny arms shaking and the little girl was screaming, "Stop! Please don't hurt my brother!"

Her cries is making me remember my memory and I felt bad seeing her try her best to stop me. I relax both my arms as I let the bat touch the ground. Her brother had lost his legs and arms due to the four zombies having their meal earlier so he couldn't even move as he groaned in place. His eyes lost all life and started turning white. The little girl let me go and sat on the ground crying in front of her brother. She kept apologizing over and over again but one thing for sure, he will never understand her again.

Now what? I can't eat her now after saving her. I was confused. Just a minute ago. I was going crazy due to the smell she was emitting but now, I didn't want to eat her. Saving her felt a lot stronger in my mind than eating her. Is she my little sister?

I crouch down trying to get a good look at her and she look like in a verge of passing out as my face got close to hers. She didn't look like the one in my memory.

"P-please don't eat me." The liquid was coming down her face and her pants reeked. A memory suddenly appears and from then on, I knew she was crying. Those wet liquid coming from her eyes were tears and the stain on her pants was piss.

I touch her cheek trying to see if her tears feel the same as the one I had in my dreams and they did. She flinches but didn't move as she cries non-stop. I stood up hearing a sound from a distance and I see another zombie come in through the broken window stumbling to the ground. Another groan from the other side and a zombie was crawling in through where I came from. I grip the handle of the baseball bat and vowed from then on, to protect this little girl like how I protect my sister in my memory.
