《Birth of the World Tree》Act 1 Prologue: Alone in the Dark

[???; ???]

I find myself waking up alone in a black void. There is no noise, no light. I cannot feel anything here, and so I find myself with nothing but my thoughts to keep me company. Where am I? What happened to me? I try to recall how I could have ended up here, only to notice that my memories are all but gone. Even those of my own name. I recall desperately calling out to the darkness, hoping for somebody, anybody to hear my plea. But nobody came.

Strangely, most of my knowledge remains intact. The sheer amount of information I have on plants leads me to believe I did something related to the subject before, but my memories continue to elude me. Worrying about this will get me nowhere. I should focus on the issue at hand, finding out where I am, why I’m here, and what I need to do next. After all, planning for the future is less important than short-term survival.

As I process my thoughts, I begin to feel a pleasant warmth spreading through me, which is odd seeing as I couldn't feel anything before. Along with the warmth comes a wave of lethargy attempting to lull me to sleep. I am able to resist its call for a short time, but sleep claims me nonetheless. The last thing I hear before the darkness claims me is something I’ll never forget.

“So this is what her immortality experiment was all about. She died before she could complete her research, preemptively hiding it so it couldn’t be misused. And you, her pupil, found it before-” The mysterious figure was interrupted from their musings by the arrival of another.

“What are you doing, granting such power to a mortal?” the newcomer boomed.

“Surely you’ve heard the news? The realms are changing, one by one. At the rate things are going, it will arrive in a scant few years. I’m simply giving them a head start, for their entire world will likely be destroyed if nothing is done to stop it.”

“And granting such power to a mortal soul? Will that not only hasten the world’s demise?”

“Possibly. But my predictions show that doing this will massively increase the chance of the world’s survival in any sense of the word.”

“And if you’re wrong? What then?”

“What will we lose by doing this that we wouldn’t have by doing nothing?”

“The council will hear of this, just you wait.”

And with that, the mysterious figure finds themselves alone once more.
