《TARGUM: The Architects Of Pride》Chapter 13. The Warden And The Governor

Godfrey envied his friends' rapid recovery. His own legs would just never be right. You just couldn't re-grow the bones, tendons and muscles, that he had lost to that damned dragon, and expect them to work as they did before. He must have regrown these legs twenty times before he got something close to usable. Just standing up, out of his mind-chair and falling into bed was the best he was going to get. Waldorf however, seemed to get into the worse scrapes imaginable and recover in a matter of weeks! Godfrey still had to swim ten lengths of the pool every day simply to keep the aches away.

The heated indoor pool at 'Evans' attracted most of the residents at some time during the day. A few lengths and you could avoid many of the pain-control drugs that the server-bots dished up.

Rising swiftly out of the pool (without using the steps) Waldorf appeared to be none the worse from his mind-scooter crash. He sat on the reclining sunbed next to Godfrey. He took a long sip from his morning orange juice.

"I have been thinking old timer"

"This pool is too small for jet ski's?" Godfrey half-jokingly replied.

"No. No. Seriously. About Agios."

"Well, we have managed to communicate with the pivotal lifeforms on the planet. Hopefully, they will support our hero in achieving his initial goals. We are still a way off the boys finding the source of magic in their world." Godfrey subconsciously tugged at his hairy right earlobe.

"Yes. I was thinking more about our antagonist. We know so little about him, like where did he come from? Why is he so bad? Can we ask Greaves just to eradicate him? Or do it ourselves?" Waldorf stared intently at his friend. He waited as Godfrey sipped his earl grey.

"You know we cannot interfere like that. We can only identify a possible hero and nudge him towards heroism. Communication is only possible through indirect channels and only if authorised by The Warden!" He pushed his wrinkly white hands in a forward motion to emphasise his point.

Shrugging, Waldorf replied "I know the rules! But who is this 'Decider' fellow? He seems to be a lot more warped and aggressive than a native Agiossan should be. We know nothing of his route to power. Only his sick and terrible atrocities since."

"Well. He has obviously got you wound up. Have the bots been messing with your medication? We should investigate. Let's go and see Greaves."

Waldorf helped him up into his mind chair and they headed out of the pool area towards the planetarium.

The image of Agios revolved slowly in the massive space. It was a 'New world.' Proportionally it had four times the landmass than it did water. The oceans were not large. They were more precisely four incredibly blue seas. Built around five hundred years ago Greaves could still proudly remember its creation. He stood in front of several holographic screens, checking for anything unnatural or out of place in the order of things.

The two ancient friends stood at the main control unit beneath the rotating hologram.

"How far can we go back on the time-frame for this hologram Greaves?"

"It is unlimited now Waldorf since I installed the last upgrade. You won't be able to zoom into facial recognition or view through structures, though, I am still working on that." Greaves went back to his images.

"Hmmm. That's a pity. How are we going to follow this 'Decider' back in time then?" he scratched his beard.

"You could check for orbital incursions?" Greaves interjected over his shoulder.

Godfrey and Waldorf both looked at each other with confused expressions.

"Explain please brainbox?" It was Godfrey who questioned the planetarium assistant.

"If you are not certain that this Decider originated on the planet in question you could check the log for any incursions into, or out of, the atmosphere of the planet. Therefore ruling out, or otherwise, him being an alien on the planet."

"Ahhhh" They both exclaimed together.

They went back through the logs covering nearly three whole years, coming across one hundred and seven meteorites, fifteen high flying dragons (Ten of which were the same massive green dragon, apparently having fun), and one small vessel. It looked very much like a shuttle.

The Warden had just finished potting up some geraniums in the greenhouse. He rinsed his compost covered hands with the garden hose before opening the patio doors into his office.

One of the bots had nudged his foot with a scribbled note. Waldorf and Godfrey had something to show him.

The large holo-screen in the Wardens office had been rigged up by Greaves to show a close up of the shuttle entering the atmosphere of Agios nearly three years ago.

"This is where the 'Decider' came from Warden. Agios is; was relatively peaceful until this happened. It is not ready to have alien incursions for many years. The balance has certainly been shifted since their arrival. There are three of them. We still don't know which planet or system they are from or who they are?" Waldorf zoomed the hologram in showing a good close up of the three faces through the cockpit of the shuttle.

"I may be able to help you, gentlemen. Look." The warden moved toward the hologram pointing toward the markings on the shuttle.

L-Z-M2

"My brother will have the answer to this one. He had better have a good answer as well. He only has one job to do. That is a mining shuttle from the L-Zero. Those three must have escaped from zero-level rehabilitation!"
