《War of Auras》Chapter 2 - The boy with no talent

Akin walks further and further away from the Great Stadium. He can still hear the screaming from the people in the arena. It is louder than before he left.
"I guess big bro started showing up his powers." Says Akin.
While Akin keeps walking, he remembers the events from last week, when he lost hope and understood that he could never be like his brother.
------------------------------------------------
Last week in the orphanage.
"That's it!! The day finally came! The inscriptions in the knight academy are finally open. I'm finally old enough to take the exams and get in there. I can finally become a knight!!" Screams Akin excitedly so that everyone in the orphanage can hear.
"So, you will try to become a knight, right Akin?" Asks Lillian.
"Yeah! Not only that, but I'll become the strongest knight ever!"
"Wow, you got big hopes. I hope you can pass the exams; you trained really hard for it."
"No worries, I definitely will."
Akin leaves the orphanage and takes his way to the knight academy.
Each Kingdom region, the north, coast, south, and capital have their own knight academy. The age required to enter it is 12; to join the knight academy, one must pass a written exam with questions about maths and science. A physical exam to see if you are physically adapted to become a knight. In the knight academy, one learns martial arts, more profound knowledge of Erex politics, and aura usage. Once you join the academy, you will live there until you are 15; places to sleep and food will be offered.
On the way to the knight academy, with a big smile, Akin thinks to himself.
I've been waiting for this day for so long. Every day I woke up early to improve my physical and went to the library to study. I've been training so hard, and that's because I'm gonna be the strongest knight ever. When I was 7, my brother entered the knight academy; today is my day. Eiden, you wait; I'm gonna keep training hard and become stronger than you.

Akin arrives at the knight academy. There is an adult at the entrance wearing a suit. It looks like he is one of the teachers. Around him, there are lots of children who will also take the exam. The building of the knight academy is a vast place. It has multiple classrooms, dormitories, and gymnasiums.
"So now we will start the admission exams of the knight academy. First, you will be separated in the classrooms to take the writing exam. Then you will head to the gymnasiums for the physical evaluation. The exam will take an entire day but don't worry; you will already get the results at the end of the day." Says the teacher.
The kids are divided into multiple classrooms, each with a different teacher. The writing exam then takes place.
After some hours, the time for the writing exam is gone. The teachers in each classroom then give further information to the children.
"Now, you will redirect to the gymnasium for the physical evaluation. That is the part that will take the longest. That is because each of you will be individually evaluated. Each evaluation will take around 20 minutes, but since there are a lot of candidates, it will only end after a couple of hours. Though while the physical exam takes place, we will be correcting the writing exams."
The kids then go to the gymnasiums and are evaluated one by one.
Some hours later, the evaluation is finished, and each kid is called to a classroom to get their results individually.
"Next Akin. Please come to get the results."
Finally, I am sure I got most of the questions right on the writing exam, and I also think the physical evaluation went great. Thinks Akin.
Akin enters the classroom. One teacher sits on a chair holding Akin's examination papers from the writing and physical exams.

"Akin, you did great on the writing exam. You got one of the best notes. The physical evaluation also went really well."
"So I passed!?"
"You did great on both exams, but we can't accept you into the knight academy." Says the teacher with a serious face.
"Huh? Why?" Asks Akin confused.
"That is the first time we see it, but Akin, you don't have enough aura to become a knight."
"Huh?? What..what do you mean?"
"During the physical examination, we also examined the reserves of aura each one had. It is not important to have a great amount of aura to enter the academy, but..."
"But what?"
"You have the lowest amount of aura I've ever seen in my life. You can't become a knight. Someone like you can't get stronger."
"But. I... Well, I can improve it, right? If I train, I can increase my amount of aura, right?"
"There is no way to train it. There is nothing you can do. You just don't have enough of it."
"What? So what do I do?"
"You are stuck with the amount of aura you are born with. You were born unlucky. Give up on being a knight; that is all you can do."
"But if... If I train really hard, maybe..."
"You don't get it! You can't become a knight. No matter what you do. For you, it is impossible!"
"I see..." Says Akin in a low tone looking at the ground.
"Well, thanks for evaluating me. I'm going now."
Akin turns back and leaves the classroom.
Sometime later.
"So how was the exam!?" Asks Lillian after Akin gets into the orphanage.
"I didn't pass it."
"Oh, really. But don't be that sad; you can retake it next week. Which part didn't you pass? The writing or physical?"
"The luck part."
"The luck part?" Asks Lillian, confused.
"I'm not lucky enough. That's why I didn't pass." After saying that, Akin goes to his bedroom.
------------------------------------------------
Akin keeps walking away from the Great Stadium. Now he can barely hear the screams.
I will never be like you, big bro. I will never become a knight. I guess I have to find something else to do then. Thinks Akin.

The King's Dungeon
The world of Praelium is a simple one. Wake up in the morning, get dressed, eat some breakfast, stare at the outside scenery and look at all the wild monstrosities that roam the landscape. Oh, and you can't forget the constant battle. Or the magic. And the guilds. Infact, Praelium really isn't simple. Everything is a constant battle to survive, as even in the most peaceful of cities, someone or something will always be out there, rooting for your demise. And the thing that cheers the most for the immediate dissipation of your frail soul? Dungeons. Areas of landscape that are unusual in every way. Vast deserts the size of planets, oceans of lava, you name it, a Dungeon can have it. But in this story? We aren't talking about any old, run of the mill, "Hurr durr, monster, battle, treasure!" type of Dungeon. We're talking about the Dungeon of a King. That's right, you heard me loud and clear. We're following the Dungeon of a King, and its Master, Basileus, in their conquest to become Praelium's greatest, most hated. Praelium's most revered, most feared. Praelium's most adored, most scored. Praelium's finest Dungeon, the cream of the crop, the Dungeon of Dunegons, and the one that will rise above all!

8 138The Crisis on Planet 9
Welcome to the dream colony Planet 9, where the streets are stained by blood and the buildings are filled with human remains. The creatures roaming among the abandoned cars and flying vehicles resemble almost to perfection the mindless cannibalistic zombies born from the fictional nightmares of mankind. The cities were built in the retro style of the 21st century, but the technology of the 24th century is ever present, mostly within the bodies of those mortally challenged monstrosities. After all, what turned them into these things was not an evolved organic virus, an alien disease, or some sort of magical artifact, it was the corrupted and reprogrammed nanobots within their bodies. Originally, they were meant to heal them and help them access the tech around them, but now they were the origin of this disaster. Among the rotting dead and the Nano-Z, as the survivors called them, Kardian Pandora awakens two months after getting bit by one of them. A young teacher at the local Resonance High, foolish and naive in his own way, but now driven by the Sapient AI in the nanobots inside his body to hunt down other Nano-Z and learn how to survive. For now, his only goal is to become strong enough and rejoin his students and fellow colleagues, foolishly hoping to somehow be able to get back to the time when the undead did not rule the streets. Will Kardian be able to survive in this new savage world or will his naive outlook lead him to a dead end? Volume 1 can be bought on Amazon: Resonance High
