《Alpha Squad - Vecto: Vengeance》Prologue 0.3

Vecto ceased his internal memory data replay. He was inside the same room from that day three years ago. But this time, Gyro wasn't around to make him a new body. This time, he had to do it himself.
Vecto curved his shields into the shape of a body and mentally floated raw metal within it. He missed Gyro's delightful banter but disregarded the emotion as nothing more than a programmed response. He was only a machine, after all, he thought.
If Gyro were alive, he would have insisted on making Vecto's new body. It gave Gyro peace of mind, as if he felt responsible for its destruction in the first place. At least he'd been able to use Dinishmen technology the last time-hovering parts and wireless laser conduction included-just like his original model. Now that body, too, was destroyed. All that remained working was his orb and an oddly shaped foot. These things, plus his shields and enough metal, is all he needed to make a body. The sole of his foot contained an Air-to-Ice function that could create ice from air, and his heel had a Flame Booster installation that could propel him at fast speeds. He could use these functions to heat and cool the metal.
Vecto floated the foot within his shields and used the Air-to-Ice function to freeze the valignium metal. Valignium, often called tyrannium, was unique compared to other metals. When subjected to extreme cold, its molecular bonds weaken, allowing it to be shaped. With his outer shield in its desired form, Vecto used his inner shield to press against the metal-to mold it into a new body part. Vecto shaped the rare metal into a piece that would become part of his leg, then, using the same foot, heated the valignium with flame to strengthen it. He had just a few more parts left to complete his new body frame. If only the old one hadn't been destroyed, he thought. If only Gyro hadn't died.

Vecto didn't consider his existence important enough to die for. He was a mere machine-replaceable-yet Gyro had sacrificed himself for what? Returning the favor for all the times Vecto had done the same? It was incomprehensible. Illogical. Vecto could be rebuilt. Not Gyro.
Once again, Vecto told himself that it was all his fault. If only he had stopped Morphaal's puppet beforehand. If only he had been stronger. If only the Alpha Squad had disbanded after Morphaal's death. If only Phantom and Gyro were still alive.
The hiss of the door caught Vecto's attention as he hovered his new leg into place. Standing in the entranceway was his servant, Azul. Vecto's blue-skinned companion had half-spiked white hair. He was dressed in gold and white and wore several silver bracelets. Vecto nodded to acknowledge him.
"I am truly sorry to interrupt." Azul spoke softly, bowing. "But I have grave news."
Vecto nodded again for him to continue.
"Morphaal has been revived."

Dungeon Darwinism: Deepest Dungeon
Dungeons are a lot like sea turtles. They’re born in clutches of dozens, if not hundreds. A hundred may be born at one time, buried in still burning cities, or in forests where the canopy hides the sky, or in ocean trenches at the bottom of the sea. But only one in a clutch ever makes it to the surface. Everyone knows about dungeons— monstrous factories that emerge out of the earth, full of riches and Arcana and power— and monsters. But most of humanity only know about the dungeons that make it. Mark doesn’t know anything about dungeons. He isn’t from this world, and only as a victim of circumstance has he become an unwilling half of a dungeoncore. The other half is a Dark Lord. (Rewrite)

Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★

Necromancer's Resolve
Foster Locke's life wasn't the harshest it could have been. But it wasn't the easiest either. Despite losing the last of his family and having immense debt thrown on him, getting the chance to keep practicing Martial Arts pulled away, and having a completely messed up sleep-schedule, he usually tried his best to stay positive to the outside world. Of course, that wasn't always possible, especially not when he was staring into the glowing eyes of a man-eating creature he had never heard of before. The glowing message-box that accompanied it wasn't much better either. Not to mention the fact that he was suddenly in a dark forest instead of the train station. This isn't a story of great anguish, inescapable peril, or heroic world-saving. Rather, it's one of a young man trying to get by in a world that seems to try his best to kill him. I hope you enjoy the read. --- Cover Image temporary [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
