INCIDENT REPORT B – 1456
Two Facility B-18 ‘native’ Institutional personnel were trying to gather some atmospheric data to further investigate the ‘thaumaturgical’ energy (or Mana) effects on botanical organisms when two undocumented people approached them.
As per protocol procedure, once native Institutional personnel sees or being seen by another native that is/are unaware of the existence of the Institution, the said personnel must immediately flee the area and contact security and Maximum Caution Team (MC-00) to secure the area and implement security protocols.
The two undocumented creatures were reported entering the Facility premise and said to be in hostile manner. The dispatched MC-00 were able to apprehend the two beings and placed in the containment cells, sealed with energy field anchors due to the high thaumaturgical energy detected from them.
Native personnel Randas, a succubus and a newly graduated doctor, finishes her incident report. She closes her desktop and stands to stretch, then she lets out a big sigh. She’s been a researcher for about 8 years and belongs to the Biological Studies Division, where she studies about the effects of thaumaturgical energy or Mana on the creatures of Earth and other dimensions.
She looks at her desk and grabs a portrait. Her mother is a succubus, and her father is a human from Earth. She recalls that the Institution she’s been employed has been over 250 years on Elyn. And 37 years ago, her mother, Yssa, who’s a succubus, met her father which is a soldier of the Institution. Her mother told her that her father saved some lesser demons from being enslaved, her mother included. She was born and grew up inside a place built by humans from another world, Facility B-18.
She learned the ways of the humans of Earth and became fond in studying biology. She was taught of things and got the very first scholarly degree given to a demon, given by humans from another world. It all happened inside the hidden community of different races, under the ground, unnoticed by any other beings on the surface.
The door in her room opens, it was her mother.
Yssa: Umm, Randas? Eldrin is outside, he’s waiting for you.
Randas: Oh, tell him to wait.
Randas left her room, she goes to the kitchen area to get eat her meal her mother prepared. As she eats, she glances at her mother, who looks so worried.
Randas: Ma? You alright?
Yssa: I should be the one asking that! I mean - you’ve faced them! The gods of our world! And the Institution was able to cage them?!
Randas: Ma, not caged. We contained them in a safe place, safe for us and for them.
Yssa: O – okay sweetie… just – just be careful out there.
Randas: I will, and father will surely protect us.
Alyssa: Oh, before I forgot…
Her mother gives her two lunchboxes.
Yssa: If ever you see your father, give it to him, okay?
Randas: I will.
Randas kisses her mother’s cheeks, took her white coat and ID, then she left their apartment unit. Outside, she saw Eldrin, an elf who’s also her junior. The place outside was like a huge apartment residence, encircled on a very wide field, with the skies made of domed glass that illuminates the whole place, all under the ground.
The two took an elevator to go the field and walk to the other elevator upwards to the main facility.
Eldrin: Umm, Miss Randas?
Randas: Can you cut off the formalities? Randas is fine.
Eldrin: Oh, umm… Randas… say, about last time?
Randas: Yeah?
Eldrin: About the two gods we met… it’s – it’s just overwhelming… what if they got out of that containment and suddenly attacks us, ‘coz you know… we are their creations and we betrayed them by caging them…

Randas: The Institution was able to hold them, right?
Eldrin: Yeah…
Randas: Then don’t bother about it.
The elevator dings. Its doors opened to another place, the main labs of Facility B-18. The two walked briskly towards their main office. Inside the office was a man wearing a black coat, and the shield insignia of the Institution on his left arm could be seen. He is the security chief of Facility B-18, Captain Stephen Falcore, a human from Earth.
Capt. Stephen: You’re late.
Randas: It’s only a minute.
Capt. Stephen: He’s your intern, right?
Eldrin: Umm, junior. Junior researcher, sir.
Capt. Stephen: Could you leave us for a moment?
Eldrin: Oh… umm…
Randas: Just go and take me some coffee, usual black.
Capt. Stephen: Oh, can you get me some as well? Cappuccino, no sugar.
Eldrin: O – okay, sir!
Eldrin leaves the office. Randas stares at the captain.
Capt. Stephen: What?
Randas: Really, dad? Really?
Capt. Stephen: I’m just asserting my authority to that kid, nothing bad with that.
Randas: He’s 50 years older than you…
Randas hands over the lunchbox her mother gave to the captain.
Capt. Stephen: How’s your mother?
Randas: Fine, as usual… still wants to see you 4 times a week instead of once, though.
Capt. Stephen: Oh… tell her I’m sorry about that…
Randas: You go and tell her that once you got home.
Both sat on the sofa, sitting side by side.
Capt. Stephen: So, those god-people that saw both of you… did they hurt you?
Randas: No, not really… but I got that feeling, like I’m going to collapse on floor. Eldrin experienced the same, that’s why we ran when we saw them.
Capt. Stephen: As long as your safe, everything will be alright…
The captain stands and goes to his desk, where he took a flash drive and a holographic folder. He gave both to Randas.
Capt. Stephen: And due to that incident, the Institution will be removing you from the Botanical Research team.
Randas: WHAT?!
Capt. Stephen: WOAH! Calm down.
Randas: I’ve been working on that research for like 3 years! And what?! On whose authority?!
Capt. Stephen: Hers.
The captain points at the office door as it opens, and an Arachne, wearing a white lab coat enters. The Arachne’s human body resembles to a 30-year-old woman, has a black-short hair, her spider body is shining violet, but the other half of her legs are mechanically built and some parts of her second abdomen has some sort of high-end life-support machinery.
She is one of the chief doctors of the facility as well as one of the oldest native personnel, Doctor Tenera.
Doctor Tenera: My authority, Randas.
Randas: But – you know it chief! This research is my whole life! I can’t just abandon it!
Doctor Tenera: Don’t worry about it. You might be able to use it on your next assignment.
Capt. Stephen: Go take a look on that folder, you’ll know the details.
Randas reads what’s inside the holographic folder.
Randas: A quantum core? In humans???
Doc. Tenera: The council hurriedly decided to send one in our dimension, from theirs of course.
Randas: They could just do their research on the other side, right? And why me?
Capt. Stephen: There are some complications… we still don’t know the specifics why, but they sent already the poor guy…
Doc. Tenera: And as for WHY I chose you, well, the council wants someone knowledgeable with thaumaturgy, specially in environmental effects, and in hypnosis or mind control.
Randas: What? I’m a succubus. What do they want me to do? Seduce the subject?

Doc. Tenera: I’ve read your previous works, Randas. Don’t deny the one you’ve work on how the combination of a certain frequency of UV waves and fire magic can increase someone’s IQ.
Randas: Is that still a thing?
Doc. Tenera: Umm, yeah. The humans of Earth are wishing to know more about it. And besides, you’ll get your own team.
Randas: My own team?
Capt. Stephen: Congratulations on your promotion, kid.
Doc. Tenera: Yes. From now on, we’ll be calling you a Research Lead.
Randas smiles. Being something more than just an average researcher was her goal after all.
A phone rings, the captain stands and took his phone. He talks to someone on it for a minute, and he went to the door to leave.
Capt. Stephen: I gotta go now. Doc?
Doc. Tenera: Yes, captain?
Capt. Stephen: Take care of my daughter, and Yssa as well.
Doc. Tenera: Count me on it.
Capt. Stephen: Randas, take care, okay? I love you, kid.
Randas: Bye dad, love you too.
The captain leaves. Doctor Tenera sits beside Randas that was reading the contents of the folder. Tenera notices that Randas was a bit nervous.
Doc. Tenera: Anything wrong, Randas?
Randas: I don’t know… I’m a bit anxious… this is a big one for me.
Doc. Tenera: Just think of it as a steppingstone. Well, when the very first time the Institution saw me, I was attacked by some humans of this world.
Randas: I thought those injuries were from an experimental accident…
Doc. Tenera: HAHAHA! No, they’re not from an accident… and during that time they saw me, their medical equipment is still outdated since they just got here, so they took me to the other side to be treated.
Randas: THE OTHER SIDE?! ON EARTH?! Wait, how old are you?
Doc. Tenera: Yeah. Hey! My age is a secret.
Randas: Oh…
Doc. Tenera: I saw everything on the other side. Their labs were also underground, but due to my injuries they had to put me in a special hospital above. They treated me, and in return I provided knowledge for them. I stayed there for like a month before having full recovery. Even now, I have privileges of going back there. For check-ups, of course. But their world is very nice, even some kids, who are humans, are not afraid of seeing me…
Randas: Wow.
Doc. Tenera: So, work hard. The council might be able to see your talents on this assignment. You and Yssa might be able to go to Earth someday.
Randas: I will, chief.
Doc. Tenera: Your team, and the subject waits on Sector-L13. Goodluck gathering info!
Randas: Thank you, chief.
Randas left the office, on her way out she bumped into Eldrin you brought the coffees.
Randas: Oh, Eldrin! What took you so long?
Eldrin: There’s a lot of people at the cafeteria, and an unusual traffic of security personnel. Here’s your black coffee.
Randas: Thanks.
Eldrin: Where’s the captain?
Randas: He left already. Treat yourself with that cappuccino instead.
The two went to the Sector-L13, a few levels below the main laboratory. The sector is protected by huge blast walls and doors. They entered the sector, and greeted by a human of Earth, Doctor Samuel Richards.
Samuel: You must be Doctor Randas? And your fellow junior?
Eldrin: I am Eldrin, her junior researcher.
Randas: I am Randas. Chief Doctor Tenera sent me here, for the thaumaturgical experiments on the subject just sent here.
Samuel: Oh, yes, yes! By the way, I’m Doctor Samuel Richards, a fellow researcher from the Anomalous Events Division.
Randas: Anomalous Events? I’m sorry for my lack of information, but I’ve never heard of that kind of division…
Samuel: Oh, I should be the one apologizing. Our division only exists in Earth, and only on Earth. On the other dimension like yours, there’s none. With that given, shall we proceed, team leader?
Randas: Thank you, doctor. Please, lead the way.
The inside of the sector was like a huge 2-floored warehouse, with monitoring balconies on the 2nd floors. At the center of the ground level, a see-through cubicle as large as a king-size bedroom, attached with numerous apparatuses. A single bed could be seen inside, with a strapped man of about 40s in age, Caucasian, bald and skinny. A lot of magic seals were placed on that man, but the man keeps on struggling on getting out of the restraints, screaming not in despair, but in anger. The three watches it at a distance, while other personnel were recording or tuning with the devices around the cubicle.
Randas: Is that our subject?
Samuel: Yes. And from our world.
Randas: The files say he has a quantum core inside him?
Samuel: And other 99 humans of our world has as well.
Eldrin: There are others?
Samuel: Yes, yes… it is still unknown to the Institution how these corpses got those cores. We were able to detect energy anomalies in cemeteries, and when we found them, they’ve got the cores inside their bodies.
Eldrin: Corpses?
Samuel: Material analysis says it is made of unknown material. We tried to connect the retrieved cores to a supercomputer for further analysis, and it functions like a computer but at 100% efficacy: no energy loss, all work, nothing more.
Randas: So, we’re going to extract a core from that man?
Samuel: Yeah. If you question “why here”?... well, we’ve been able to extract 30 in total. The remaining 70 were in containment on Earth. An incident occurred when the 31st core was to be extracted. The subject went rogue and killed the surgical team whose about to extract the core, like it was protecting it. Then it killed the other personnel, all in all a hundred casualties that only happened for 30 minutes.
Randas: Oh my…
Eldrin: So, the magic seals are for restraining him?
Samuel: Yeah, and to keep him sedated as well. Scientific methods doesn’t apply on this guy, that’s why our resident mages put up thaumaturgical devices, or ‘runes’ in your terms, to sedate him.
Randas: Strange… even the undead have Mana in them, that’s why a soul less body moves. But that corpse, he doesn’t have any.
Samuel: And that’s why Doc Tenera chose you. Someone with expertise in Biology and Environmental Thaumaturgy, we wanted you to calm it down or something, like incapacitate it.
Randas: I don’t know if it will work… I guess this will be a trial-and-error.
Eldrin: Well. We better get started since that guy is about to break free.
The man inside the cubicle becomes more aggressive, as the magic seal on his skin starts to fade.
Randas: Subject the cubicle in 500 hertz of UV and call at least two mages or anyone with lightning magic affinity.
Samuel: Yes, team leader. I’ll go make the preparations.
Randas: Thank you, and please hurry.
The whole place gets busy. The cubicle was surrounded by people tweaking the apparatuses and people encircling themselves to cast magic on it. They chanted until a magic circle appears beneath the cubicle. The man inside looses his anger, his about to rip off the straps on his bed but he fell unconscious.
Samuel: We should send in the surgical team.
Randas: But the controlling spell is still up, will the surgical team be fine?
Samuel: Don’t worry, team leader. The team will be equipped with hazmat suits made to repel mana energy. It will be safe for them.
Randas: Okay, send them in.
A group of 3 men and 3 women entered the cubicle, all equipped with their protective suits and surgical instruments. They began performing incisions on the unconscious man’s chest. After a rough 15 minutes, they were able to pull out a small ball the size of a fist. They placed the ball inside a protective container and brought it outside. One of the surgical team gave the container to Samuel, and Samuel hands it to Randas.
Samuel: This will be in your care, doctor.
Randas: Hmm, I guess we should start doing the analytics on this object since the Institution will take this after a week. Could you make preparations for it?
Samuel: Yes, doctor.
Eldrin: Umm – what about me? What should I do?
Randas: Go and assist Samuel.
Eldrin: Will do!
All the sudden, Doctor Tenera enters the place, escorted by two MC-00 soldiers fully covered in cybernetic armor. She immediately approaches Randas who’s still holding the container of the core. Tenera stops Eldrin and Samuel from leaving as well.
Doc. Tenera: Eldrin, go and take Randas’ mother. NOW!
Randas: Chief! What’s going on?
Doc. Tenera: Your father told me to get you out of here as fast as possible. I don’t know why, but he contacted me and he’s in a hurry. Samuel, go with them and bring that core. Randas, meet up with your mother at the –
Before Tenera finishes her sentence, an alarm wails all around the place.
Alarm Voice: Warning. Anomalous Entity detected, threat level - Epsilon. All non-combatant personnel, evacuate through Passage-77 and proceed to Facility B-1. All combatant personnel, report to your superiors and prepare for containment or extermination procedures. This is NOT a drill.
Samuel: Jesus Christ!
Doc. Tenera: What are you guys waiting for?! GO!
Randas: What about you, chief?
Doc. Tenera: I’ll catch up, JUST GO! NOW!

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
