《Feathery Delight》Afterword

Hello everyone!
Happy you have made it here. What a journey it has been. The last half a year has been both exciting and exhausting for me. With all of my personal and mental shit going on writing this novel has been therapeutic in more ways than one.
First of all. The story of Kael will, most likely, go on hiatus for a little bit. I will still be writing, although a different story, but I need to figure out what I want to do with this one. I have a whole lot more in mind for good old Kael, but if I am to be honest, the numbers just don't work. There are more problems of course. My writing has changed, for the better, I think, over the writing of this book and the first few chapters are properly some of my worst ones published. That makes attracting new readers very difficult, leading, in part, to the low chapter views the story has. There are other factors at play that make it hard for the story to flourish on this site. For better or worse, put a litrpg tag on any old story and you will have better numbers in an instant.
All of that said, I am not saying that my writing is flawless, far from it. That is another reason why I am hesitant about continuing with this story for now. I feel like every subsequent book will carry forward bad decisions I made in the first book. To address that and the quality differences I would have to review every single one of my 300 pages. That takes time, a lot of time. I still plan on continuing the story of Kael, but I think a little distance might be useful.
I have learned a lot while writing Feathery Delight, especially those skills I have to work on. Writing conversations started out to be one of my most disliked aspects of writing. Now, it is one of the things I enjoy the most. So, to that end, I will do something different for my second piece of writing: Action
Advertisement
That is not to say I will transition into pure action and combat. Writing and reading character-driven stories will always be the thing I enjoy the most, so expect that to not change. At the same time, the setting of Feathery Delight made writing a high-action novel hard. The main character is simply not capable enough to work in such a setting. Of course, I could have just glossed over that fact and made him op with some cheat like so many other authors do, but that felt like a copout to me. Nothing against the authors that do that stuff, I read many of their stories, but that is just not what I want to be about.
In the end, I have decided to take a break from Feathery Delight and work on some of my lacking skills as a writer. I LOVE this story. I want to continue writing it. But I need to see if I can produce something that is more attractive to the general reader base. I have maybe a year to see if I can hack it as a writer.
Anyway, this is turning more and more into a rant. Here are the facts: Feathery Delight goes onto hiatus for now. I will release a new story in the coming weeks with extra chapters on Patreon. In my downtime, I review Feathery Delight and bring the story to one level, fix mistakes, fill out parts of the story that feel lacking, and delete stuff that is too much.
Thank you all for taking time out of your lives to read my work. Thank you for going on this journey with me despite my failings. Thank you for your kind words and reviews. Thank you! See you soon.

The Designated: Out of Control
It happened quicker than anyone would have imagined. Multiple hurricanes were one thing. People had dealt with that in the past. But, like kids playing dominoes, one thing crashed into another. Areas affected by hurricanes needed resources all along the Gulf and East Coasts drew rescuers and resources away from other parts of the country. When wildfires lit up the Pacific coast and mid-west, those areas were already understaffed. Driven by hurricanes in the Pacific basin, uncontrolled wildfires burned through towns, destroying everything in their paths. Across the Pacific, Asia didn't escape. From the Philippines, across China, into Indochina, and Bangladesh and India. Typhoons and cyclones pounded the coasts and far inland. Widespread flooding forced millions from their homes and across international borders. Mexico was hit hard and thousands died in mudslides as Katia slammed into their East Coast. The refugees fled north and west. Rumours started that hundreds of thousands were headed for the US border. Instead of running out of steam in the southern US, several hurricanes tore up the eastern seaboard, devastating cities and renewing their strength before veering east across the Atlantic. Maria and Ophelia veered east and slammed into Europe, reaching as far as the Netherlands and Russia before finally dissipating. After that, too many weather stations were offline to provide any form of co-ordinated information or warnings. Wildfires in Portugal burned ahead of the storms, fanned by hurricane winds. They sparked wildfires leapfrogging across Europe, beyond any one country's ability to cope. Already uneasy from multiple terrorist attacks over the summer, anti-refugee groups seized the opportunity to stage protests across Europe. Some turned violent as they clashed with police forces. Several governments declared martial law to quell the rioting and enforce evacuations along the path of the storms. Rumour and speculation overwhelmed facts. Unrest spilled over into widespread violence. Then sickness broke out in the displaced populations. Within a matter of a dozen weeks, tens of millions died. In the coming winter months hundreds more would follow. The Designated Project was activated.
