《The Network》[Chapter 11] Skill

Finally!
Lady luck has smiled down upon me!
I get up from the ground and dance around in my little victory dance.
"Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh y- OW!"
My aching body finally succumbs to my wounds and breaks down. I slump down to the ground in irritation.
"Maybe the world isn't ready for a dance like mine," I mumble under my breath
"Anyhow..." I stare back at my new notification.
Due to the [Combat Specialist] skill, the host has learned a new skill: [Energy Strike]
-This looks like one of those cool skills that the main characters have in stories."
"Should I give it a try?"
Despite the pain, I get up and start walking towards a sturdy-looking pile of rubble.
I stand in front of it and take a deep breath.Exhale.Deep breath. Exhale.
I position my body into stance.
...Deep breath. Exhale.
The instant I exhale, I activate [Energy Strike] and deliver a straight punch.
This is it...the moment where legends are made...the moment where the weak are separated from the strong...the moment where I begin my journey as the main character!!!
[Energy Strike] has been activated.
The flow of energy travels delicately in my body, from the feet to the legs, to the hips, torso, shoulders, arms, and finally the hands. When the flow reached my hands, a surge of power vibrates in my muscles and bursts out like thunder
YES!
My hands made an impact with the stone with a-
CRUNCH!
Wait for a second...that's not what it should sound like.
I examined the rubble. No damage. Only a slight gust of wind was generated by my punch.
That's... disgustingly underwhelming.
I slowly glanced down at my hand and sighed.
Typical.
My knuckles were somehow badly bruised and swollen. Maybe fractured.

How does that even work?!
I mean come on, I took so much damage but generated so little force.
Did [The Network] also screw up the laws of physics or what?!
On the bright side of things, I activated [Acute Mind] before I using this stupid new skill, so the pain felt more like a severely bad sting from a hornet.
It doesn't hurt at all.
...
Eventually, I got over the pain and I wrapped my hand (right) in a piece of cloth.
I was still kind of stingy after the pathetic performance of a cool-sounding skill. It didn't seem like a big problem, but if my theory about limited space for skills was correct, that meant that I wasted space for a useless skill instead of at least a mediocre one. That gave a huge advantage for any competitors.
"Hmmm...what to do...should I try to look for more food?...or maybe for other people?"
Congratulations Survivors! The first days of the [New world] are over! From now on a [Ranker system] will be put in place to distinguish the weak from the strong! The top [Rankers] will get better resources and [Quests], and not to mention more [Fans]! Scurry to the top of the board and gain [Fans]!
But most of all. Be good entertainment.

Blue Hills
Nothing had ever felt quite right for Alexander Adamson. He'd worked his way up to a job he could tolerate, a few casual friends, and even a nice little apartment that he could call his own, though it really wasn't. The problem was that none of it was satisfying. It was as though he were going through the motions of a life, rather than having one of his own. Of course, it didn't exactly feel right when he woke up in a strange bed in the middle of nowhere. Nor when he was told that he was now the proud owner and operator of a local farm. A farm that had belonged to a late uncle he'd never known. But with the first train out of town a full 'season' away, he had plenty of time to get used to the idea. Plenty of time, perhaps, to even get to like the strange little town of Blue Hills. I have a discord now. Marvel at my ability to somehow still be antisocial on the other side of a screen! Back from hiatus along with my other fiction. Chapters are on a Thurs/Sun schedule until book 3 of that fiction is completed, at which point I'll be updating this daily. At which point uh.... I dunno what I'm going to do.

Wild Child
Flynn was a normal college student with a normal routine. Wake up, go to school, come home, do homework, laze around until midnight, lay in bed trying not to let the existential dread of inevitable death set it, and go to sleep. Completely normal stuff, really. That is until he mysteriously wakes up in a space between dimensions with game-like prompts demanding he purchase skills before he is sent off to another world. And look at that, it only takes 95% of his skill points to buy the [Eternal Youth] skill, what a steal! Too bad that in this new world there is no civilization, uh… anywhere. ---------------- Hey all, this is just a side project I’m working on in my spare time so I don’t get burned out while writing my more planned out stories. I’m making all of this up as I go on, so read at your own risk.

Evolution of the Lazy Gamer by Bruticus
It had been five years since the game Royalroad first appeared. A new expansion had been released and one person was assigned by his company to review it. That was the beginning of the story of a lazy, unheroic character who would meet others just as lacking in the heroism department as he was. Still life (or virtual life) throws you curve balls and you never know what will happen.
