《Infestation》Interlude 4

I was drawing glances all around me from when I was walking to the G.U.G. building. On my back was a large, cheap knapsack filled to the brim with our recent harvest. Although there were no holes, no way to see the contents of said knapsack, the overall large size on my relatively slim and slender frame stood out starkly compared to the ordinary and average people wandering the streets.

Perhaps some people would feel uncomfortable being the subject under the gazes of so many strangers but I had drawn many eyes towards me the last time I had walked this same journey--due to my distinctive features; it wasn’t anything unusual for me. Additionally, I don’t mind what people think because their thoughts do not impact me.

The weight of the knapsack itself was significantly heavy--hence why it was I and not my master carrying it--but I was sufficiently strong enough to carry it without it being a burden. Perhaps the weight was visually evident and that also made my image seem strange?

Regardless of the journey, we had eventually made it to our destination; the G.U.G. building. I had been here yesterday and my master had high hopes of having me registered but, to her dismay, it turns out that since I was counted as a minion summoned by my master, I therefore lacked personage and couldn’t be registered.

I was okay with that, however. The validation of this edifice did not matter to me but my master seemed to not take this situation as lightly as I did, for some reason.

Hence, my master had to accompany me in the deliverance of the goods, otherwise it would apparently be illegal--for my knapsack would be taken as evidence of an unlicensed clearing of a hive. I did not understand why this should stop me from going alone but my master seemed determined to accompany me and so I was obliged to join her.

Once we had made it inside, there were numerous people around, and some did glance at us--as people are wont to do when someone enters a room--but the stares I had been receiving so far were not to be found at all. In fact, comparatively, everyone seemed much more relaxed over my strange visage.

We walked up to the desk and my master engaged in a conversation with the woman--a different person from yesterday--and we were quickly directed to go to another part of the building--the same place we had been to yesterday as well. This whole place seemed quite intelligent laid-out.

A woman met us again at this desk where we had transferred to and my master conversed with her as well. This conversation, however, went on longer than the previous one, and, at one point, my master seemed somewhat exasperated.

Finally, thankfully, my master and the woman had come to some kind of agreement as we were further directed to pass through a door and we were met with a white, pristine, tiled room.

There was another counter and another person standing behind it--a motif that this building seemed to be fond of. My master talked a little with that person before agreeing to something and then ordered me to empty my knapsack on the counter.

Walking up, I took off my, admittedly heavy, bag, unbuckled it, and methodically began taking scales of keratin, broken or whole parts of carapaces, and meaty bits of flesh--all things I had been ordered to harvest just the other day.

Once I had finished, equipped the bag again, and stepped back, the man in white began sorting through the items. He picked one up, looked it over, tapped it a bit, and then put it back. He repeated this for the majority of things but not all of them.

Once he was done, he posed a question as to whether she wanted further testing of the materials but she declined, preferring to be paid immediately. The man seemed fine with that and printed out a small piece of paper, telling her to take it to the woman at the desk--the same woman who had directed us to come here just now.

As such, we left the clinical, sterile room and returned to the woman. Once my master showed her the slip of paper, she took it, looked it over, and then typed something on the computer. She asked my master another question--these people seemed to be determined to be very thorough, asking questions all the time--and was my master answered her, she withdrew to a room hidden behind a wall.

She was there for some time--although I found the waiting pleasant--before returning and paying my master in physical currency. With that, my master seemed happy and satisfied and told me that we were done here; we would be leaving.

Finally, it seemed that our objective here was completed and so, we made our way back home.
