《Oddity》Chapter 8

Amaria was the first that fell asleep on the couch. Ambrose laid in Amaria’s legs and was the second one to sleep. I wasn’t able to fall asleep, instead I stepped outside. The smell of salty ocean air and the cool breeze helped me breathe. It seemed as if the storm had just stopped, the soft dirt had turned into squishy mud. I walked south, deciding to go to the herbalist.
After what felt like forever, I made it to the herbalist. I walked in and Hedra's daughter, Leda greeted me. I instantly realized how gorgeous she is. She had short, flowing, brown hair and bright hazel eyes. With freckles scattered across her nose. I felt myself blush, “H-hi, is my mum okay?” I stuttered. She smiled, her bright teeth shown, “I believe so, follow me, please.”
“Okay,” I followed her. Within a minute we got to where Mum was, “One moment please!” She walked into the room and told Hedra something, he nodded and walked out. “Hey, Lunar.”
“Hi, is my mum okay?” I asked worriedly.
“She is stable right now.” He stated
“What does that mean?”
“It means she is doing okay right now.”
“Will she be okay for a while?” I asked.
“I couldn’t tell you. Isn't it a bit late for you to be up?”
“I couldn’t sleep. Can I see her please?” I brushed off his question
“Sure, come along.” I followed him.
Mum was sleeping. I kissed her forehead, “When will Zara be born?” I looked at Hedra curiously. “I’m not sure.” Suddenly Mum woke up and cried in pain. “Mum?!” I exclaimed and Hedra jumped. He went over to Mum and rubbed her back, “I guess the baby is coming sooner than I expected.”

“Why did she scream?” I cried.
“She started labor, I think.”
“What does that mean?”
“Your mum is ready to give birth.”
“Okay?” I replied.
“Sorry, but I'm going to have you step out.”
“Why can’t I stay?” I asked.
“Procedure.” He said looking tired. I nodded and walked to the front. Leda was there half asleep, when she saw me she snapped out of her sleepy state, “Is your mum okay?”
“Yeah, she went into labor,” I smiled.
“Already?”
“Yup!” I exclaimed.
“Do you know the gender of the baby?” She questioned.
“Yeah, A girl!”
“Ooh, baby sister!” She cooed, “You can stay here as long as you want.”
“Thanks.”
I walked over to the stump that is near the entrance and sat down. What if I’m not a good sibling? What if Zara hates me? What if I get replaced? I thought, panic filled me. Leda walked over to me and put her hand on my shoulder, “I think you will be a great sibling.”
“What?” I was a little shocked, “How did you know I was thinking about that?”
She smiled, winked, and walked away. I blushed when I remembered how beautiful I thought she was earlier. Did she know that? Can she read my mind? I looked at her, she shrugged. I felt my face grow more hot.
I fell asleep on the chair and woke up to Hedra, “Lunar, come on now.” I rubbed the sleepiness out of my eyes and followed. We eventually made it to Mum, she was sleeping and a tiny little baby was on her chest, “Is that Zara?” I asked.
“Yup, healthy baby girl. She is a bit premature though,” he stated. My eyes lit up, “Can I hold her, please?”

“Sure, here,” he handed her to me. Blonde-red hair tufts poked out and her eyes opened. Round, brown eyes showed. Zara’s little hand reached for my face. I giggled, I felt tears filling my eyes. Her expression changed as I cried and she grabbed my nose, laughter filled me. She suddenly started crying. I flinched, “What did I do? What is happening?” I asked Hedra. “She must be hungry,” he replied. Mum's eyes abruptly opened, “Zara?” She whispered. I gave Zara to Mum, “Oh, my moonshine…” she smiled. “Hi Mum,” I went to give her a hug,
“Zara is hungry.”
“Mhm, babies are always hungry. Bring her here, please.” I handed Zara to her, “You should go home, Lunar.” I nodded and walked home.
