《Cross Roads: The Monsters Among Us (Book One)》Chapter 23

Moments later, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon Crucis are waiting outside the condemned Cathedral. Suddenly, a blue truck pulled up in front of the three. Emerging from the truck was the battered and bruised Alpha Crucis and Britney Larson. Britney popped the trunk and when inside to get a few things from the back. Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon Crucis rushed over to their friend and colleague.
“Alpha, you look like hammered shit!” Epsilon Crucis specified.
“Donovan has already transformed,” Alpha Crucis confirmed. “He’s been using the isotopes to create a drug that enhances his own werewolf genetics that was lying dormant inside of him.”
“The isotopes he stole are poisonous if taken directly into the bloodstream. Taking copious amounts of that magnitude, wouldn’t that kill Donovan?” Delta Crucis questioned.
“He was planning on it, but it did the exact opposite. Instead, his own genetics fought off the poison and transformed him into the werewolf that has been killing all of these people for years. Despite his brute strength, he still retains his sanity and intelligence,” Alpha Crucis explained.
“A killing machine with a brain of Albert Einstein. This shit never gets easy,” Epsilon Crucis complained.
“He can bleed, so he is not unstoppable,” Alpha Crucis assured. “Right now, he’s recuperating from his injuries. We need to find out where he is and where he is going.”
“He’s going to the only place that matters now. He wants to end things once and for all: the frat house,” Gamma Crucis suggested.
“We got a go, now,” Alpha Crucis ordered.
“What about Beta?” Gamma Crucis questioned.
“Knowing her, she’s already there,” Epsilon Crucis guesses.
Britney met up with the Crucis Sentinels with a modified single barrel shotgun. “Do you have the blue pouch?”
Delta Crucis handed her the blue bag. She rifles through the bag and pulls out one dart.
Britney loads the gun with a dart while she explains what’s inside. “This is a diuretic drug that will--”
“That will knock them out cold, we know,” Delta Crucis finishes, taking the gun from Britney.
“Wouldn’t have killed you to put in his coffee and call the police?” Epsilon Crucis ribbed.
“His body mass… has elevated exponentially since the last time I saw him. If he is too far gone, this will kill him,” Britney frowns.
“Good to know,” Alpha Crucis chides as the Crucis Sentinels head towards the Delta Theta Omega fraternity house at Redford Park.
Redford Park is an urban community 25 minutes away from the University. Conveniently, is where a lot of fraternity and sorority houses are established including the Delta Theta Omega.
Right now the fraternity brothers of the Delta Theta Omega are holding an impromptu candlelit ceremony, honoring their fallen brothers. Proudly wearing the Delta Theta Omega colors of red and green, everyone is on the front porch and spreading throughout the sidewalk during this event. Even the local news teams were covering this event from a distance, while independent news journalists were up close in the crowd with their cell phones and digital cameras.

Hearing about the latest accusations about the fraternity have left most of the brothers of Delta Theta Omega a bit shaken by the recent and past accusations haunting them all like a ghost. The headmaster wanted to make an example of showing no fear by holding the ceremony at night.
The older headmaster proudly addresses the crowd of more than 300 people, “Ladies and gentlemen. Brothers and pledges. Tonight, we celebrate our fallen brothers. For years, Delta Theta Omega has dealt with a lot of rumors and accusations. But we are united as one! Delta Theta Omega has been one of the founding fraternities in this university, where great men--!”
He was abruptly cut off by a monstrous scream, echoing throughout Redford Park. This immediately put the audience on edge as they too don’t want to be another victim.
The headmaster to regain his composure and address the crowd again, “w-where great men have strived--!”
He was again cut off abruptly by another monstrous scream. However, this time it came from a certain distance; everyone turned around to see an 8-foot werewolf who was Donovan charging right at them at full speed.
“Holy shit…” The headmaster yelled as the crowd scattered, running in different directions. Tripping over themselves, getting far away from the monster as soon as possible. The bloodcurdling screams of fear and pain echoed throughout the campus. Most of the unfortunate victims will follow by the hands of the werewolf, one by one.
One person was stupid enough to hit Donovan over the back with a folding chair, only to be sliced in half by his claws.
As he was about to tear into another victim, someone threw a liquor bottle and broke it over his head. Donovan looked around to see who threw the liquor bottle. Fortunately, he picked up on the scent as he turned around to see Jacob staring back at him.
Unimpressed by Jacob’s last stand, Donovan will take great pleasure in killing him out of spite. But Jacob wouldn’t go down without a fight, pulling out his .357 Glock and shot at the werewolf. Pumping round after round inside of the murderous monster. Alas, the bullets were bouncing off his body, causing no damage.
Donovan couldn’t help but laugh at his petty attempts to stop them. Out of bullets, he sets down his .357 Glock and pulls out a pump handle shotgun. He only had eight rounds, but to a man like Jacob, he had eight chances to take him down. Round after round, he laid into the beast. At least he felt it, sending him backward. Even knocking them down off his feet. To Jacob, this was a small victory.
The victory that he earned throughout this entire suffering ordeal. Anti-climatically, Donovan rose to his feet again and shrugging off Jacob’s assault. Jacob looked on as he didn’t really have much left.
Donovan decided to put this old military dog out of his misery. Lunging towards him, Beta Crucis would intercept Donovan, jump kicking him away from Jacob.
Donovan would recover and would see a female tanuki kemonomimi with shoulder-length brown hair and big red auburn eyes who was wearing another Crucis Sentinel uniform.

Another one, Donovan thought as he rose to his feet.
“Good work, detective,” Beta Crucis said.
“You could have taken him out yourself,” Jacob contradicted.
“And deny you of your miraculous comeback? Who knew you could handle a shotgun like that!” Beta Crucis praised with a smile.
Jacob couldn’t help to become teary-eyed by the little girl’s selflessness, “you’re a good kid, Beta. God bless you.”
More pissed off than hurt, Donovan readied himself to attack once more. Only to be met by the rest of the Crucis Sentinels.
One of them was enough. Now five? Donovan thought. It was best for Donovan to run away in which he did.
“After him!” Alpha Crucis exclaimed as a pursued Donovan. And being on four legs instead of two, he had the advantage. Unfortunately for Jacob, he can keep up with any of them as he stayed behind and helped the crowd.
He would show incredible agility by jumping over the cage in a single bound. Then he would quickly climb the roof of the fraternity house. Unfortunately for Donovan, he would meet up with Epsilon Crucis on the rooftop who only used electrical transportation.
Desperately trying to get away, unsheathed her katanas and held it over her head while channeling her Aethereal energy.
“EPSILON CATENA FULGUR!” Epsilon Crucis executed by conjuring lightning from the sky to her blades. She swung both of her katanas firing lightning projectiles at Donovan as he was jumping off the roof. Fortunately for Epsilon Crucis, one of her projectiles hit Donovan at the small of his back stunning him. Electrocuted, Donovan fell flat on his face. Mustering up his willpower to get on his feet, he tried to run away as fast as he could. However, the Crucis Sentinels were catching up on him.
Spotting him 20 feet away, Gamma Crucis held out her hand and performed an Aethereal technique.
“GAMMA MURUS IGNIS!” Gamma Crucis executed, surrounding Donovan with a 20-foot wall of fire and trapping him. She even used her Aethereal energy to enclose Donovan in a ring of fire.
“MR. LARSON, SURRENDER NOW! THERE IS NOWHERE TO GO!” Alpha Crucis demanded. The flames of the fire ring were even burning the fur off the Donovan. In desperation, he dove out of the circle of fire. Of course, he was now an 8-foot werewolf who is on fire. Still trying to get away from the sentinels, he was screaming bloody murder while doing so.
“This guy’s fucking insane!” Delta Crucis screamed out.
Beta Crucis saved him by using her water-based Aethereal technique.
“BETA CATARACTA!” Beta Crucis executed, summoning a massive pillar of water out of the ground. The water would douse the flames of the Ring of fire and Donovan as well. Collapsing on the ground in pain and exhausted, Donovan couldn’t run anymore. Instead, he took it upon himself to crawl away from them.
Concluding this chase, Delta Crucis took the tranquilizer shotgun and shot Donovan in the back with a dart. Immediately, Donovan felt groggy and collapsed face first to the ground.
Epsilon Crucis met up with the four through electrical teleportation, wanting to see Donovan up close, “Damn, he got fucked up…”
Gradually, the crowd forms around the Crucis Sentinels. Finally, they saw the monster that was terrorizing the University for all these years. They are relieved and elated because the nightmare was over. The crowd even gave the Crucis Sentinels an ovation for all their hard work. Even Jacob himself gave a round of applause himself. It was a small reward for stopping the madness, but it was much appreciated.
“I guess that’s our cue,” Alpha Crucis whispered to Epsilon Crucis.
“Right,” Epsilon Crucis agreed. She held out her hand, and electrical teleported herself, her teammates and Donovan out of the street.
One hour later, the Aethereal Queen Lycka received a message from her sentinels on her cell phone. It thrilled her that the mission was a success and they apprehended the assailant Donovan Larson and still alive. The sentinels emailed the location to the hospital they were working. It was about a 30-minute drive from the house they were staying in the hospital where everybody was working.
Lycka immediately went to the hospital laboratory where the Crucis Sentinels are hard at work. Alpha Crucis and Delta Crucis are working on an antidote for Donovan. Meanwhile, Beta Crucis, Epsilon Crucis, and Gamma Crucis are keeping an eye on Donovan in the other room.
“Ooh, he’s a big one,” peeping through the glass window. “I know you are a dog lover, Delta. But you can’t keep him.”
With the Aethereal Queen couldn’t help making a joke in a severe situation, Alpha Crucis explained what happened earlier this evening, “It looks like Britney’s drug actually did the trick. We ran some blood tests already. It turns out that he is stuck like this for the rest of his life.”
Not too heartbroken by Donovan’s condition, The Aethereal Queen shrugged, “I think it’s an improvement. But if he wants to turn back into the suave Dr. McDreamy again, I heard a mixture of honey and monkshood can cure ‘Lycanthropy.’ But that is a great myth.”
“I don’t know. Isn’t monkshood a powerful antioxidant?” Alpha Crucis not actually buying into the joke. “Poisonous as well… It also contains Pseudaconitine.”
“Um, Alpha. That was a joke,” the Aethereal Queen clarified. “But yes, I heard sometimes combining honey with other ingredients can be beneficial. We did it all the time back in the day.”
“It does have hydrogen peroxide and Methylglyoxal,” Alpha Crucis prioritized. “Methylglyoxal, that is a reduced derivative of pyruvic acid.”
This was a long shot to bring Donovan back to normal. But in this case, anything to the benefit of his condition.
“Methylglyoxal and Pseudaconitine. Are these ingredients feasible and in abundance?” The Aethereal Queen asked.
Delta Crucis typed on her cell phone to find such chemicals. She smiled in approval of her findings, “Definitely.”
