《Cross Roads: The Monsters Among Us (Book One)》Chapter 22

Outside of the university, there was another suburban area where a young man was sitting in his own dining room at a residential home. He pulled out a syringe and a vial of chemicals from his jacket pocket.

He punctured the vail with the syringe, and he filled it up. He wanted to make sure there were no air bubbles. He took the same needle, and he injected himself with the liquid in his arm. Exhaled in relief as he felt the effects kicking in. Though it was only a matter of time now before he got the full effect of the drug.

Then he suddenly heard someone open the door. The man wasn’t expecting company, and nobody knew he was here.

Of course, the young man was in fear of his life, “Who’s there?! Show yourself!”

Then, the intruder stepped out of the darkness and identified herself. She was tall, well built with a milk chocolate complexion. She was also wearing a Crucis Sentinel uniform that complemented her hourglass figure.

Any man would fall in love with her at first sight, but he had other problems. It was that, and he was familiar with whom she was and who she works for, “Oh, it’s just you. I had a funny feeling someone like you would show up after yesterday.”

“Alpha Crucis of the Crux Nexus,” the woman announced as she kept her distance knowing he might be the assailant they were looking for, “Dr. Donovan Larson, we went to your laboratory hours ago. Someone tore the place apart. But you already knew that.”

“Yep, that’s me. Wow, you actually cut right to the chase.” The man identified himself as Donovan Larson by self-admittance.

She wasted no time interrogating him, “Looking over your research, Dr. Harker was too busy playing the political game trying to become the new Dean of this university as your wife was making recreational drugs to fund your hormonal therapy testing.”

Donovan shrugged his shoulders in admittance. “Once a hillbilly chemist always a hillbilly chemist. But that wasn’t the reason why I married her. You see, I needed money to fund my research. But not like this. That bitch Harker had to use the woman that I loved and dangled the past over her head to get what she wanted. Enough was enough. I had to show her who was really in charge.”

“Like what you did four years ago?” Alpha Crucis added.

Donovan scoffed at the idea. The past was too hard for him to bear, even now, “That was nothing in comparison. I made it look easy, I know. You should have seen me in my ‘rookie year.’ The moment that I had a taste of that kind of power, the monster that was inside of me just… took over. I couldn’t deny him anymore. I couldn’t keep him on the control. It’s like he had a mind of its own. The monster knew I was in pain and he helped me. He spared me from that pain. They didn’t deserve to live or to be free. The world out there is one primary jungle, and we are the animals who run loose inside of it. Just like the ways of the wild, only the strongest to mate, eat and survive.”

Feeling disgusted by his words, Alpha Crucis shook her head. “Did your sister feel the same way?”

Donovan turned around and shot the woman with a 1000-mile stare as he corrected her. “Brother, Alpha Crucis and no.” Donovan’s anger immediately turned into sadness. “He was weak… He wasn’t strong enough to live in this world… So, they made an example out of him just like in the wild… I tried to be the ones who walk upright and use my brain, but I was only fooling myself!”

Alpha Crucis clutched her Sabre Rapière and ready to draw as he continued, “Try to commit suicide one day, wasn’t thinking straight using my research I concocted to kill myself. But I guess you can say a part of me died that day, and something was reborn inside of me. I wanted to know more.”

Facing her with red glowing eyes, he finished his lecture while holding one of the isotopes he had stolen the night before, “And little by little, I realized of the utmost in obvious truth: those who kill monsters should make damn sure they don’t become one.”

Laughing malevolently, he crushed the vials in his hand. Proving his own strength. Coming to not much of a shock, but of a revelation that he was the one responsible for the murders. The transformation was a gradual process.

His movie star face was being sculpted to be shaped like a wolf. His five-feet 11-inch frame began to grow eight feet tall. Once his arms and legs that was completely hairless started to fill out, now being covered with blackish-gray fur. His hands and feet turned into claws. His straight and perfect teeth transformed into razor-fanged teeth that could tear into flesh and crush bone.

The transformation was complete. Right before Alpha Crucis’ very eyes, Donovan Larson transformed into an eight-foot werewolf. Letting out about a battle cry of his own, he howled loudly. Being prepared for this, Alpha Crucis drew out her Sabre Rapière.

Conjuring the wind behind her, she propelled herself towards the monster performed a flying kick to his chest, sending him backward. The impact of the kick was so powerful, he flew through the dining-room window and went tumbling outside the backyard.

“ALPHA ASTERN!” Alpha Crucis decided to be on the defensive with her Sabre Rapière while creating a whirlwind surrounding her as they were in the backyard fighting.

While Donovan was recovering from the previous attack, he spotted a barbecue grill. He went over to the barbecue grill and picked it up over his head, throwing it at Alpha Crucis. The BBQ grill itself the stainless steel, which you couldn’t tell by how Alpha Crucis shredded the grill with her Sabre Rapière like paper.

Donovan roared at Alpha Crucis out of frustration and began to lunge towards her at full speed. Playing right into her defenses, Alpha Crucis used her whirlwind to pick up the broken debris and hurl it at Donovan. Not only were the damaged parts of the grill blunt but were sharp as well. One by one, the fractured debris was hitting and cutting open Donovan. Being relentless, he still lunged at Alpha Crucis. Choreographing this, Alpha Crucis jumped into the air leaving Donovan falling flat on his face.

Hovering in the air and above Donovan who was slowly getting up on his feet, Alpha Crucis performed a diving kick between the shoulder blades, knocking him several feet back into some patio furniture. Being buried under an expensive set of patio furniture, Alpha Crucis descended from the ground and landing on her feet flawlessly as she didn’t want to approach Donovan.

Even when injured, werewolves’ adrenaline can multiply their strength. The results are varied, and Alpha Crucis didn’t want to take that chance. Her patience paid off with Donovan erupting out of the broken patio furniture. Knocking over and pushing aside the broken tables, he took three steps toward Alpha Crucis and collapsed on one knee. Clutching on his left side, he was cut deep and was bleeding badly.

He took a few deep breaths as his adrenaline start to kick in. Getting back up on his feet, he lunged towards the Crucis Sentinel. Donovan took a swing at her, but Alpha Crucis dodge rolled out of the way. Recovered, Alpha Crucis did a jumping roundhouse kick to his face. Donovan staggered but still on his feet.

Then, Alpha Crucis went after his weakness and started kicking him on his left side. Donovan was wincing in pain but was still on his feet. Then, Alpha Crucis attempted to kick Donovan in the face, but he parried the attack with his arm. Finally finding the opening, he picked up Alpha Crucis over his head and thrown her on the other side of the street, hitting a parked station wagon while leaving a striking impression.

Donovan finally has the upper hand in this fight but couldn’t capitalize as he was still in pain. Limping his way outside of the street, he staggers to Alpha Crucis. Showing signs of life, Alpha Crucis crawls back onto her feet while picking up her Sabre Rapière.

She got back up from that?! You have got to be kidding me, Donovan thought as he looked around the area. Since Alpha Crucis had a weapon, he should have a weapon as well. He spotted a nearby bus stop pole and ripped it out of the ground. Now with a bus stop pole as a weapon, he was ready to go one-on-one with the godly heroine.

Donovan cocked back his bus stop pole and swung at Alpha Crucis’ head with full force. Luckily, Alpha Crucis sliced the bus stop pole with her Sabre Rapière in half with incredible ease.

Growled in frustration, Donovan took the remainder of his weapon and swinged at Alpha Crucis, she was far too quick for him to catch her. Finding an opening herself, Alpha Crucis thrust her Sabre Rapière into Donovan’s right shoulder. Crying out in pain, he dropped his weapon.

Out of desperation, he backhanded Alpha Crucis in the face and knocking her several backward feet. Donovan went on one knee again. The Sabre Rapière was still lodged in his shoulder, and Alpha Crucis was slowly regaining consciousness. He had to end it now as he took the sword and pulled it out of his shoulder. Now bleeding profusely all over the street, Donovan dragged himself to the fallen Crucis Sentinel as she was making a comeback of her own.

However, an innocent bystander would come in between both of them. Not so innocent herself as she was just as responsible for Donovan’s transformation. It was his wife, Britney. With her arms stretched out wide in being face-to-face with her monstrous husband, she stood her ground.

“Donovan!” She cried out.

Donovan was visibly confused. Why in the world would Britney help Alpha Crucis? He snapped out of his confusion, and he growled at Britney. He wasn’t going to hurt her, he just wanted to scare her off.

Unfortunately, Britney wasn’t buying it, “and I said don’t! I know it’s you, Donovan!”

Trying to keep up the façade as best as he could, it was starting to crack as he was showing signs of sadness and doubt.

“Please… She’s trying to help you… Please, let us…” His wife pleaded.

The Donovan that Britney knew was still inside the werewolf. As tears were running down his face, he threw the weapon to the ground. Screaming out in mental agony and in emotional pain, he ran away from both Britney and Alpha Crucis and into the night.

Exhausted herself, even Britney needed to catch her breath. But she can’t be thinking about herself at this moment as someone is in dire need of medical attention. She rushed over to Alpha Crucis and helped her to her feet.

“Are you okay?” Britney asked.

Alpha Crucis didn’t answer. Although, she shot a nasty scowl at her, knowing she was just as guilty as Donovan. Her nose is bleeding and had a nasty gash on the left side of her face from the backhand she received from Donovan. She limped towards her Sabre Rapière and picked it up gingerly.

On her wristwatch, she notified her teammates immediately, “This is Alpha Crucis, I have identified the werewolf--!”

“Wait, don’t kill him!” Britney pleaded.

“He just confessed killing 19 people!” Alpha Crucis snapped. “Don’t think for a moment he deserves any kind of special treatment!”

Britney knew she wasn’t any sort of position to ask any kind of favors. Especially for what Donovan had done. But still, she had to suggest another way without murder.

“There is another way to stop them aside to murder. I created a diuretic drug that will slow down its metabolism,” Britney suggested.

This made Alpha Crucis even more furious, “Wait, you knew he was the werewolf the entire time?”

The blatant admittance on Britney’s part was enough to make her guilty by association, but none of that matters now, “Please, we need to go to Harker’s office and find it.”

“Where exactly?” Alpha Crucis bellowed.

“I had to keep it in subzero temperature, so it’s in the freezer. It’s in a blue pouch.” Britney explained.

Alpha Crucis knew this was a waste of her time. She could have easily killed him if she wanted to. But a part of her wanted to honestly believe that whatever kind of monster Donovan has become, he wasn’t born that way. Something created him.

And so, she relented, “This is Alpha Crucis responding to all sentinels, go to Dr. Harker’s office and check the freezer. We may have a solution.”

“Gamma to Alpha, we are already at Dr. Harker’s office.” Gamma Crucis responded over her wristwatch.

Alpha Crucis was a bit stunned, “Well, that’s convenient. I want you to check the freezer and see if there is a blue pouch inside. Regardless, meet up with me at the central campus.”
