《Cross Roads: The Monsters Among Us (Book One)》Chapter 17

Meanwhile, Blair and Chelsea are strolling down the walkway of the eastern campus where it’s almost a ghost town. At least the smoke cleared in the sun was shining again, but it still smelled like burnt rubber throughout the campus. It’s going to be days or even weeks before that smell subsides.

“I bet it was those sculptures the students made,” Chelsea vented. “Who puts flammable materials inside of a building that was a fire hazard, to begin with?”

“I don’t think anybody ever guessed that ‘Coconuts’ would come here and fuck everything up,” Blair chastises.

Still walking, there was a group of students culminating in front of the security building that caught their attention. Outside the doors was Jacob trying to ease the situation.

“Really? Does that old fart know when to quit?” Blair insults.

Chelsea sighs in disgust. “Obviously not... Better check it out…”

This could be a situation that could turn out violent. There is little to nothing that they can do in this capacity, but at least they can try to defuse the situation so it won’t end in violence. When you boil it down, everybody was fed up. They were tired of being scared and confused by what was happening at the school. Many people had flown all over the country and across the globe to study here because they want a better education and a better life. Alas, that was taken away from them, and they wanted answers.

Both Chelsea and Blair made it to the ever-growing mob of students outside the security building.

“Yo, my man, what’s going on out here?” Blair asked a male Elven student.

Getting his attention, the angered student answered Blair, “Haven’t you heard? ‘Dudley do-right’ wants to bring in the military to kill one wild animal running around the University! He even wants to do background checks and blood tests for everyone! Meanwhile, there are some of us who know who is responsible?”

“Who?” Blair shrugged.

“Delta Theta Omega. A fraternity around here,” the student answered. “Most people say they take things a bit too far and destroy property around the neighborhoods and around campus. They were blamed for a lot of stuff, yet the so-called brotherhood retaliated by acting like first-grade assholes.”

Delta Theta Omega is an academic fraternity who primarily recruits sports athletes and those who have political ambitions. They’re one of the oldest and founding fraternities at the University with the significant ties to many seats in the office from local politicians to those who are lawmakers in the White House.

“I don’t know. I think it’s a bit of a stretch. Blaming them for murder, I mean…” Chelsea contradicted.

“Are you kidding me? Don’t tell me you to believe that there is really a monster killing everyone. That’s discriminative. Many students and faculty around here aren’t human. It has to be those guys!” The student accused.

The crowd chanted louder and louder, as Jacob tried his best to calm the mob down. “Ladies and gentlemen, please! I regret to inform you that until we find this monster--!”

“Bullshit. Somebody is around here destroying the University, and we want answers!” A female human student clambered as the mob agreed with her with a loud roar.

“I know you’re all afraid and confused. But you are coming here and screaming your heads off is not helping anybody!” Jacob rebutted as the mob wasn’t buying it.

“We wouldn’t be screaming out here if you guys do your job,” the male Elven student said as the mob agreed.

“If you can do a better job than us, then feel free to sign an application. However, you are in the same boat as us. We don’t know if it’s a monster or a group of vandals,” Jacob offered as it only pissed off the mob even more.

Blair decided to have a little fun and choose to put her two cents into it. “Or maybe it’s a little bit of both. Maybe it’s not a mindless killer after all!”

“Mindless, maybe. But a killer nonetheless. My fellow students, we have built our fair share of controversy even before this. We all came together then, how about we come together now?”

“Come together? That’s a bold statement coming from a rental cop with little to no authority. Did the Dean promote you from a mall cop to toastmaster general?” Blair heckled as made the mob laugh.

Jacob took offense and fired back, “Spare the amateur hour at your watering hole where you make jokes for booze. As a matter of fact, we are all doing everybody a service for even reopening the school and even letting non-humans enroll here in the first place.”

“And what the fuck are you implying to, Paul Blart?” A female centaur questioned while throwing a large onion at Jacob hitting him in his stomach. Jacob collapsed onto the ground as the mob started to throw tomatoes, vegetables, and eggs at Jacob and the building.

Knowing this might end badly for him, Chelsea and Blair picked him up and carried him to safety without getting hit themselves. They locked the door behind them, but it was futile as the mob was still throwing debris at the building.

Blair and Chelsea helped Jacob to a chair as he began to recuperate from the embarrassing attack.

“Well, that could have gotten along better,” Chelsea reflected.

“Yeah, whoever thought that girl had such a wicked curveball. Am I right or am I right?” Blair joked.

“Dear sister, you’re not helping…” Chelsea warned with a nervous smile.

“Neither are you… And neither are they… Maybe I’m not the one who should be complaining…” Jacob depressingly sighs.

Unknowingly to Jacob that two Crucis Sentinels are here handling the situation, Chelsea needed to know how many others are here vying for the similar opportunity that was given to him, “It seems to me you are a bit outmatched, sir… Do you have somebody who can handle this?”

“Me, the Dean, the whole committee, everyone! I just want to find this fuckhead!” Jacob snapped.

Despite Jacob’s failed attempts at handling the situation, it was still his job. He had to feel at least 4 inches tall and utterly worthless, not being able to control was happening to his university. Fortunately for Chelsea, she knew that.

Sadly, Blair didn’t think the same way, “I guess those culinary kids brought everything from the pantry.”

Chelsea looked over to her sister as she was holding her smartphone at the mob outside which is still throwing eggs and vegetables at the building, “Blair, what are you doing?”

“I’m taking pictures of these stupid asses,” Blair admitted.

“We should go around back, it’s not like they have this whole place surrounded,” Chelsea announced.

“Good plan,” Blair agreed.

“Hey! Is it all right if I come along?” Jacob asked.

“No.” Blair flatly denied.

“Why?” Jacob whined.

“Because you’re the head of security? And it’s your job? And you have a crisis right outside your door?” Blair explained.

“Okay…” Jacob hung his head down low, knowing that he has a situation on his hands he cannot win as the ladies went out the back entrance undetected.
