《Cross Roads: The Monsters Among Us (Book One)》Chapter 5

Later that afternoon, the sun was setting in a suburban neighborhood near Sycamore University. Most of the fraternity and sorority houses are there, away from the prying eyes of campus security. Those who can afford it can rent a furnished house provided by the University while focusing on their studies.
The furnished houses the University rent out to their students or visitors are very spacious and clean. Every year, they buy new furniture and electronics to accommodate the tenants. The University owns at least 20 houses in the neighborhood, and most of them have multiple bedrooms and bathrooms.
In one of the six-bedroom guest houses near campus, the same little girl who stormed into the Dean’s office was playing video games on her Nintendo 3DS in the living room. The little girl who happens to be the Aethereal Queen. Despite her small size and baby-faced looks, she is older than you think.
The Aethereal Queen cannot in any way force any female to take the call, the Aethereal Queen is not allowed to appoint a replacement since she has no vote and the Aethereal Queen is prohibited from fighting battles in no way, shape or form. The Aethereal Queen is more of a messenger of the Seven Heavens and more of a figurehead than most. However, the Aethereal Queen does have many perks during her tenure.
The Aethereal Queen has an extended lifespan and gets to keep her youthful looks. Also, the Aethereal Queen can shape her body into what she would like to be only once every 10 years. It's that, and The Crux Nexus are extraordinarily wealthy and have an indisputable income which the Aethereal Queen can handsomely have access to.
And when you have 100 years to live or even less than that, how can you dictate it into a story? As many others are lucky enough to live for 100 years, Lycka Benibara has lived more than that and still going strong in her prime. Both figuratively and literally. Starting out at a young age as a nurse in the 1900s, she always wanted to help the sick and help others achieve greatness. To her, that was her calling.
In a series of fortunate and unfortunate events, she had seen many of her friends become overwhelmed by the vices and illnesses that were crippling the world. At age 18, the heavens anointed her as the new Aethereal Queen without even being a part of the Crux Nexus to everyone’s shock. Using her position, she can finally help others who can’t help themselves.

Even though she is a Queen in the eyes of the heavens, Lycka Benibara is not from royalty and is not afraid to either show it with her bratty and childish attitude at times. Lycka always wanted to help the everyday people, even at the ire of her former colleagues and many monarchs who have real royal blood in their veins in their point of view. During her time as the Aethereal Queen, she had learned from many others how to govern and rule as a monarch while keeping herself grounded.
“Why don't you go into your Pokeball?” Lycka quietly screamed to herself.
Ever since she came back home from the Dean’s office, she started playing Pokémon X again and tried to catch a female Axew, a dragon type Pokémon. Being stingy, she didn’t want to end up buying a bunch of Ultra Balls to find one Pokémon. It would be easier for her to do so as this went on for several hours.
Suddenly, someone knocked on the door and let herself in. It was a statuesque woman with milk chocolate skin. She wore a parker-fit white boyfriend tunic and a Daphne black skirt that complemented her slim and busty hourglass shaped figure. She had long jet-black hair and light brown eyes.
She was holding a plastic bag of refreshments that were supposedly for Lycka. Alas, the little girl was too busy playing a video game. The woman joined her in the living room and plopped the plastic bag of treats on the coffee table.
“I’m back, milady,” the woman announced.
“I know you’re here, Selena. Take a load off already!” Lycka ordered, still intent on her game.
“I wish I could, but one of the professors called in sick, and I decided to step in and do a lecture for him tonight.” Selena declined.
“Somebody called in sick? More like somebody has a terminal case of yellow fever to me,” the little girl heckled, still playing her game. “I do want all five of you to come here so we can actually brief you on what I have learned today.”
“Everybody around here is restless. The people don’t want answers anymore; they want a solution. Nothing really too brief about,” Selena being determined as this makes Lycka see her eye to eye.
“You may think so, but not everyone. Something tells me that the Dean and her favorite stooge is going to take matters into their own hands. I’m afraid they might do something stupid,” Lycka wondered.

“The sooner we find this monster, the better,” Selena agreed.
Selena’s determination and grit humored her as a little girl giggled. “You actually are breaking my concentration, you know. Standing there like that. You went to the store, didn’t you? Break that bag open and let’s have some treats.”
Selena felt uneasy relaxing at a time like this. But this was the Aethereal Queen. If she was at ease, then so should she, “of course, your Majesty.”
Serena made her way to the couch and sat next to the Aethereal Queen. The furniture was comfortable and very soft. Gingerly, she lay back on the couch. It smelled like it came right from the factory. It appeared to be recently bought, too. She still felt uneasy, sitting down. She felt like she should be doing something.
“Okay, this isn’t so bad,” Selena reassured herself.
“You should do this more often,” Lycka suggested as she’s put aside her game and opened the plastic bag of goodies. She immediately took a can of soda and cracked it open. “Nice and cold.”
The Aethereal Queen took pleasure in taking a sip of her refreshing drink as Selena tried to do the same. She took a can of soda and opened it. Usually, she drinks cans of soda with a straw, but today she would make an exception by following her Majesty’s lead.
“You said this can of soda had 23 flavors, your Majesty. I can only taste three,” Selena reviewed.
“It all depends on other people’s taste buds,” her Majesty corrected.
Selena laughed at her somewhat incompetence. “Oh, my mistake. We usually don’t get this kind of beverages in England.”
Despite Lycka being the Aethereal Queen, she keeps a friendly rapport amongst her subjects and inner circle. The relationship between both Selena Logan and the Aethereal Queen is more of a mutual friendship rather than master and servant. She usually treats everybody equally and expects everybody to treat her as an equal in return.
“Every time I have a chance, I come here to New York or Miami. I love the cities here in the United States. I even went to California a couple of times,” the Aethereal Queen reminisced.
“There were a lot of places I wished to go to. Thanks to you and the Crux Nexus, you made that a reality to me,” Selena sadly summarized as she took a gulp of soda.
Selena Logan was a byproduct of the harsh streets of Brixton, London. Losing her family at an early age, she decided to end her own life until fate intervened in the form of a little girl. Not having anything to lose, Selena agreed to join the Aethereal Queen and the Crux Nexus.
Always wanted to fly away like a fighter jet, she had learned to manipulate and control the wind. If her sonic booms don't blow you away when she passes you by, her precision rapier fencing will cut you down to size. Determined to fight for a better life, she doesn’t live in the past and only moves forward. With newfound purpose, nothing can hold her back.
Hearing that made her Majesty playfully punched Selena’s arm, “I told you when you joined me, everything was going to be okay. So, don’t worry about it.”
How can Selena be relaxing at a time like this when there is a monster running on the loose killing everyone on campus? Undoubtedly, the massacre will start again. Monsters like these couldn’t really help themselves, and this made her even more wary of the situation.
Then again, her Majesty was right. Her worrying herself wouldn’t do any good and won’t make the situation any better. She needs to relax and focus on what is next to come.
“By the way, I thought you were going to meet up with the others,” the Aethereal Queen reminded.
“Yeah, I don’t like food trucks all that much… I just can’t understand how people love that kind of stuff,” Selena stated.
“Let me guess, food poisoning?” Lycka guesses.
“I had to be hospitalized for E. coli. Food trucks are far worse than any other fast-food restaurant who doesn’t keep their bathrooms clean,” Selena scowled.
“Yeah, guilty. Fast-food restaurants are so gross,” the Aethereal Queen agreed.

The Archaic Elements
A fantasy world, its own unique power-up system, some mystery aspects to make it look interesting and an MC that should make sense but well messes up, cause plot. Flashy fights. Characters will use their brain, unless it is an arrogant young master that needs to be taught a lesson. The starting is slow and maybe boring. The main MC does not desire great strength or harbor any great ambition. He starts out as a naive, lazy and a boring person. But the story does hold one aspect which will fuel the growth of our MC, which is his boundless curiosity for adventure and his will to explore. The second MC is a reincarnation/transmigration and he has a clear cut aim that he needs to achieve. His past life experiences also becomes a pillar that will help guide the main MC, while his friend also supports him. The writing is slow and steady. I will provide reasonings behind most happenings and keep it a logical story. It's a WIP as I edit the previous chapters even as I release more, so while the content doesn't change, the style and smoothness improve. The current release rate is 3 chapter/week. There is no specific date as I can get sidetracked or forgetful., but I will try to stick to Tues, Thurs and Sunday releases.
