《All Things Must End》Chapter 8: Schooling Begins

After Milo had met everyone that joined the group, the teacher started to talk.
"Now that everyone has made it, I need to tell you what classes you will be attending."
When the group of students heard this, they were full of anticipation. They were finally about to begin their schooling. They were all overjoyed and couldn't wait to learn more about Singulas! Sadly, though this is not what was going to happen.
The teacher then continued to say.
"You will all be attending mandatory history and science courses."
Some of the students in Milo's group were not sure if he was being serious, history and science? He had to be joking, right?
After a few seconds of silence those students knew that he wasn't kidding. The teacher was being completely dead serious. The students face became paler at the thought of just the prerequisites.
After a while they calmed down. They were only 13, there was no way it would be that hard. Once again though they had to face reality. The teacher dashed their hopes and dreams with the final thing he had to say about it.
"You are expected to excel in these courses, don't worry, they will not be terribly hard. The history and science courses are only equivalent to a college doctorate degree. If you fail these courses, you will be removed from the school. Trust me when I tell you this, being removed from the school, would be the least of your worries, were this to happen."
Most of the students took this as an empty threat, but Milo did not. Milo could tell there was a lot more to what the teacher was saying. The only reason he didn't just tell the students, was probably because he was not permitted to.

Whatever the reason was, it defiantly wasn't simple. Milo definitely did not want to test this rule. Even though he was from a notable family, it would not be wise to create trouble.
If the school did let Milo off for not following the rules he would gain nothing. Everyone in the entire school would hate him, if such a thing were to happen. He defiantly wouldn't go far with absolutely no friends.
Milo didn't have any friends yet in the school, but he knew they would be important to have. After all, friends can help you with work, getting money, or almost anything in life.
He also had to watch out for enemies. Milo was defiantly to the kind of person to go out of his way to make enemies. This didn't mean that enemies didn't find him though. A perfect example of this was Azrael.
Milo had done nothing to Azrael, but he could tell that Azrael already hated him. This wasn't something that Milo could understand. Milo felt that there must be something wrong to hate him for no reason. Milo wasn't wrong believing this. There was something wrong with Azrael, but he also did have a reason to hate him. Milo didn't know that Azrael had a reason, but Azrael did.
After all of the classes and things to go with it, everyone was ready to move on.
The teacher told the students that.
"Now that the class schedule is completed we are ready to assign you to your rooms."
Renjamin was confused and asked.
"But we never even said when we would take the classes. We didn't even get a choice. Did you sign us up for this too? This is wrong. I want to sign up for my own classes."
When the teacher heard this, he tried to smile as amicably as possible. It didn't seem like that to Renjamin though. The 'smile' that the teacher had appeared to be a hideous scowl. It was as if the teacher would swallow any disobedient students whole.

To the rest of the students the smile seemed perfectly normal. Because of that they were very confused with how Renjamin was acting. They could see him shaking profusely. There was a continues, stream of cold sweat pouring off of his body. The students could only assume that Renjamin wasn't feeling well and he was possibly sick.
Only Renjamin could feel and see that hideous smile that seemed to consume him. It was a smile that almost sucked him in and destroyed his mind and his soul...
The rest of the students during this time were thinking about the rooms they would be staying in.
Milo was wondering who he would be maintaining a room with. What he did not want was to stay with Azrael. He didn't know why but Azrael seemed to put off a horrifying demeanor. It was the feeling of ultimate pain and suffering. It was the feeling of a never-ending torment and absolutely no control.
Milo could only pray that he wouldn't end up with him. What he worried about even more though was Azrael ending up with Rose. He couldn't put his finger on it, but Rose was somehow connected with Milo. Whatever that connection was he couldn't allow it to be destroyed by letting her be with Azrael.
Milo didn't need to worry about this though. Considering this was an old classical school, they did not allow a female to stay in a male's room. They had never had any problems, mainly because everyone was still just thirteen-year-olds, but the school were set in their classical ways.
The teacher then started to walk them through the school campus.
There were massive towers that seemed to loom above everything and wide buildings which had the appearance of medieval castles. The strangest sight by far was a MASSIVE towering building that was made of pure grayish crystal.
This building went up into the sky almost endlessly. Milo wasn't even able to imagine how long it would take to climb the whole thing.
The entire tower was filled with small twinkling white dots that looked like stars. Milo thought that this must have been a reflection from the stars that were currently shining down from the sky.
Sadly, they weren't going to that building so Milo couldn't observe it any longer.
When they finally arrived where they were going, the students were blown away by the sight they saw.
It wasn't the in sheer awe, no, it was the opposite. The boarding rooms are incredibly plain. The building that they were housed in was also very plain. It was one large stone building with two wings one for the males, the other was for the females.
There was only one problem Milo and his roommate wouldn't be staying here...

CW: Contains mildly graphic scenes of violence/death, topics of unwanted pregnancy/abortion, scientific experimentation on sapient beings, depression/suicide, grief, and trauma. The tone of this fiction is often dark and distinctly dystopian in lighter shades of Margaret Atwood, though where there is darkness there is always hope and light. On Hiatus Until September When the School Year Begins and Mom This story takes a considerable amount of time and mental energy to complete. I thought I had enough backlog and time to post it as a serial while COVID kept my child home from school, but it turns out while I can quickly write other pieces, I cannot produce the quality I need with this one at an acceptable rate. We'll resume in September when my days are much freer. Thank you for your patience and stay tuned for a different storytelling romp more suited for a serial platform in the meantime.

Can you visit a land where mountains look like freshly baked phyllo dough, or live in a castle bigger than my apartment complex? Tigers instead of taxes. Monsters instead of men with too much power. Cutting to Life: an NPC LitRPG (Battle Royale)
Nikola is an NPC in The World of Wills, a video game where players can feel sensations as if they were truly there. She leads a life of bloodshed and murder - that is, until one day she wakes up sapient. Just as she begins thinking real, non-scripted thoughts and making connections, she and the players in the game are told that if they die in the game, they die in real life - and it's time to get killing. But what of Nikola, the emerging AI consciousness? How does she win in a game that can only end in her being wiped from existence at the end of it all? - Updates Mondays and Fridays. Cutting to Life is a slow-burn LitRPG with a villainous (later anti-hero, or maybe still villainous, haha) female lead. It's told from the perspective of Nikola, an NPC within the World of Wills who's become sapient and is now mysteriously able to play the game as a PC. It's quite light for a LitRPG, but the system and stats become more of a focus later when Nikola herself can access them. The story gradually builds into a Battle Royale where the players' lives are on the line (if you die in the game, you die in real life), and only one party of savvy adventurers can win. They'll have to spend their time and stats wisely as dungeons promising rare gear float down from the sky - but is a legendary sword worth killing someone for, knowing they'll stay dead forever? - This story is told in third person, past tense.- This is a slow-burn LitRPG that spends a lot of time establishing its setting and characters, because I believe this will make for a better payoff in the end. As such, the Battle Royale doesn't start until chapter 30 or so.- Chapters are anywhere between 800 words and 3000 words long.- Book cover by Vixeona.Cutting to Life is also being posted on SPB and Scribble Hub.Thank you sincerely for reading.
