《Tales of Erets Book Four: Judgment and Justice》Chapter I Part III

Something creeps in the darkness. Its feet drag across a stony floor. There is a dripping sound in the distance, and it echoes. Voices. Not one voice in the dark, but many. Thousands. Tens of thousands. Maybe millions, hard to tell. But the voices speak no known language. The sounds are hisses, growls, and squeaks. A shriek! Sudden, and loud, and at such a pitch that it could not have been a human voice.

A spark in the dark. The lighting of a lantern. An illuminated face. Human. Young. He holds out his hand, raises the lantern high. The darkness is brought to light, and shadows flee. A great monument. An enormous cone carved from the stone of the caves themselves. Upon that cone, repeating patterns. Cut triangles all in rows. Crawling around in that darkness were the creatures who'd been making all that noise. Gray skin. No eyes. Pointed teeth. Bat-like ears. Long arms and short legs. The creatures cannot see the light, and yet they pull away from it. Perhaps they feel its heat? One opens its mouth wide, revealing its needle-like teeth and shrieks. Countless numbers of the creatures crawl about on the floor, and climb the walls, and the ceiling. The light shines upon a vast underground city. Buildings and homes carved from the stone stretch out for miles in the tunnels.

The man's face again. He beholds all that's spread out before him and he smiles.
