《Kuni no Senso》Book 2 Chapter 12: Which Tells of A Ransom

ITE BROKE OFF THE ARM OF ONE OF HER VICTIM and let the aroma of blood fill the air. Kadaina stood beside her, trying to calm her down.
"Ite, please calm down," he said to her. "The enemies are mostly dead. You kinda made sure of that." He whispered out the last few words. An Aotoshi troop that hadn't retreated during the initial rampage tried to charge at Kadaina and kill him from behind. Ite catches sight of this and releases an arrow into the troop's head in two seconds flat. After the troop collapsed to the ground and the life escaped his eyes, she picked the arm back up once more.
"Tell me to be calm ONE MORE TIME!" she yelled, waving the arm around as she spoke.
"Now you're just scaring me," Kadaina said, disturbed by the sight of Ite swinging around a detached human limb as if it was nothing. "Have you mentally snapped?! I'm getting highly concerned about your mental state. Put that dismembered body part down!"
Before he could continue, a buggy began to drive up to them. As the vehicle stopped, Ite tried to see who was driving it, only to be prevented from doing so by the windshield being designed like a mirror would in an interrogation room. After the driver and the passenger exited, Ite's blood began to fill with rage as Yukan was thrown out into the field and a gun was pointed at his head.
"Brunnhilde, you bitch!" Ite cried out at the sight of her rival.
"Oh, honey," Mirikiteki began as she took the wig off that she'd put on simply for identification, "that was just a facade. Mirikiteki's the name and killing's the game."
"I'm going to murder you-" Ite belted out as Kadaina and Zenpan held her back.

"What do you want, witch?!" Zenpan called out as he restrained the angered woman as her green eyes were filled with rage.
"Listen carefully, kiddos," she called out, her face cold and emotionless. "I'm only going to say it once. The Akuni army will surrender the war to Aotoshi or Shirei here will blow this kid's brains out." The ensemble of people on the field in front of the fortress as a gust of wind passes through, exemplifying the chills upon their spines they felt at this moment.
"Don't listen to this psychopath!" Yukan yelled out against his better judgment, wincing in pain as he did so. "The war must go on! Kunshu doesn't know where the blade is! We have to keep it away from-" Yukan received a kick to his side for this statement by Shirei.
"Shut up you annoying piece of-" Mirikiteki began before an arrow cut her off, fired at the gun Shirei held. The barrel broke off of the revolver, making it useless.
"Why you little-" she called out, trying once more to begin. This was cut off by Kadaina casting a spell he referred to as the Lux Dei. A massive ball of light exploded just out of range of Shirei, scaring him off as he ran back toward Fort Yaoseyun's interior. Yukan rolled to his side to get out of the range of the attack. Mirikiteki, seeing this happening, was filled to the brim with anger and unsheathed her katana. She sliced at her, but Ite blocked it with her bow, the alloy of steel, gold, and garnium* deflecting the attack with sparks emitted as they rubbed against one another.
"Aww," Ite mocked," is someone upset that they got abandoned? Does Mirikiteki need a band-aid?"
"You're going to need more than a band-aid when I'm through with you," the katana-wielding foe yelled as she tried for another swipe, only for it to be blocked once more. "You'll be needing a coffin."

Mirikiteki landed a kick to Ite's gut, sending her flying backward about six feet. Once Ite got back up, the foe charged in once more, grinning wickedly. However, the archer was prepared this time around and landed a devastating right hook to the nose.
"That's it!" she yelled out as she rubbed under her nostril to see some blood that had begun to make its escape. "You're all dead!" She charged once more at Ite.
On the other side of what appeared to be a reopened war zone, Kadaina rushed over to Yukan, tired from having used most of his energy up with the Lux Dei.
"Dude," Kadaina remarked, "you're not looking so hot."
"Thanks, genius," a heavily damaged Yukan scoffed sarcastically. "Can you just heal me already?!"
"Running low on fumes," he replied groggily. "I can get you back on your feet, but I can't heal you right now. We've been fighting for a while."
"Whatever!" Yukan groaned in annoyance, already tired of the pain he was in and not wanting to experience it any further. He turned his attention to Ite, who was fighting with Mirikiteki and displaying her incredible dexterity. "Look at her go. Her skills have improved a lot."
"She has probably grown the most out of all of us," his friend told him. "Now, lay still so I can see the full damage."
"Just hurry it up," Yukan barked at him before trying to lighten the mood, "and don't you dare go near my ass!"
Meanwhile, Ite and Mirikiteki are still fighting one another. At this point, Ite's arm had been slashed by the katana and Mirikiteki had sustained a black eye to add to the bloody nose. The owner of the Nukenai Bow then managed to trip her foe and knock her off balance, the grass now stained by the blood from her nose upon impact. Mirikiteki then jumped up and charged forward in a desperate attempt to stab Ite with the katana. She had telegraphed the attack too much, however, as Ite bound into the air with a back-flip and, once her body had made a perfect 180-degree turn, she let the arrow she'd had prepared since the start of the fight go and watched as the arrow pierced cleanly through the center of Mirikiteki's black eye. One last spurt of blood and the assassin fell to her knees. As her face fell forward onto the grass, the arrow lodged itself further through her head.
After the death of her enemy, Ite returned her bow to her back. Yukan rushed toward his girlfriend, ignoring the immense pain that radiated through his entire anatomy as he held her in an embrace. Ite began to tear up.
"It's okay Ite, it's okay," Yukan whispered to her, trying to calm her down once more. "I'm back."

Recruit - An Infinite Labyrinth prequel
A prequel to The Infinite Labyrinth. The year is 1816. The British Empire is in full swing, under the auspices of King George III. The Infinite Labyrinth has been pouring out its product from beyond our reality and fostered a new industrial revolution. Times are changing, and the people of London are feeling the winds of the revolution while British Professionals push into the Labyrinth. The newly formed Artefact Hunting Company is looking for recruits, and they have new technology to help them. From the slums of London, they aim to recruit a new wave of Professionals. And make Zacharias and the Earl of Carnavon lots of money. So, for Rowan Rivers and a handful of lucky ones, it's time to head into the Labyrinth, and discover what makes it different from England. And what makes THEM different? Recruit is a bunch of chapters I wrote to create to the setting, mood, and game systems of the Infinite Labyrinth. It is NOT a complete story in the classic sense. It's more of a slice of life view of early days of a normal Professional from the Infinite Labyrinth, and it's heavy on info-dump. It's 90% canon - there's probably a bit of a difference between how some characters and common behaviour are portrayed here and how they'll come out in the main story. Set two years before the events that kick-start the main series, it features some of the secondary/peripheral characters of the Infinite Labyrinth and will tell you all about the basic mechanics of the Labyrinth's RPG system. It can be considered a spoiler, as the characters in the Infinite Labyrinth are going to need to figure out all that, on their own. But if you like a much deeper exposition in the mechanics, here it is. The entire prequel is about 80 pages long.
