ITE STOOD BEHIND SHIREI, preparing to launch another arrow. Her eyes spoke of newfound confidence and determination.
"If you want to live," Ite called out to Aotoshi's commander, "I'd suggest surrendering."
Shirei turned to Ite and gave her a slight grin. Just then, Shirei disappeared from Ite's line of sight, seeming to have vanished with the wind as it blew across the plains in front of Yaoseyun Fortress. The archer was understandably enraged that she failed to finish him off, but she decided to put that aside for the time being. She rushed to Kadaina's aid after her target vanished.
"Are you okay?" she asked, trying to raise the mage back to his feet. "I'm sorry I should have disobeyed you sooner."
"Yeah, yeah," the injured mage answered, feeling mocked for the state he's in. "I'm fine. I just have to heal."
"I should have killed him on the spot," Ite remarked, frustrated once more by her actions or lack thereof.
"I'm just happy you're here," Kadaina commented, rising back to his feet. "Just stay alert. Also, when we find Yukan, tell him that I tried to hold you back but you were stubborn as hell."
"Don't worry," Ite said before beginning to lock another arrow into her bowstring, "I will."
Kadaina healed himself before joining Ite once more in the fray. Bizarrely enough, she was in the front lines despite using a weapon for primarily ranged attacks. Her movements were calm and collected, with a refined appearance overall. Despite Ite's calm appearance, one could take a closer look to see that she had been boiling with rage. As an enemy troop approached her, she swiftly turned and killed him with an arrow through his right lung.
"Ms. Daitan," Zenpan said as he met with her, "I'm very happy that you have joined us. There is no other archer I'd rather have watching my back." The two of them go back to back.

"I can't just let you guys have all the fun," she yelled out as another arrow left her bow, piercing through three people. "Besides, my eyesight is better than yours and I feel my reflexes have improved." She slung her bow over her back for a brief moment. She then grabbed an Aotoshi troop from roughly four feet away and dragged him in toward her before snapping his neck in one clean motion.
From behind her, Ite heard the war cry of a soldier closing in on her. She turned to see him charging in with a dagger. Seeing this, she grabbed an arrow from the quiver on her back. Then, leaping toward him for better leverage, Ite took the arrow and forced it through the back of the soldier's mouth. A quick spurt of blood found itself leaving the back of his head as the arrowhead came out of the other end. Some of the blood made a connection with her cheek as she pulled the arrow out. The soldiers seemed to have largely retreated as she looked around a barren battlefield, littered with the corpses of the deceased troops.
"You doing okay, Ite?" Zenpan asked as he approached her. "That was your first hand to hand."
"Yeah," Ite replied, breathing heavily as the adrenaline rush started to taper out. "I'm fine."
"Most of their main force has surrendered or retreated into the fortress," Kadaina called out to them as he walked in their direction. "We have won for now, but I fear what comes next."

The Prince of the Sand
“Today you have to be the strongest man of all, son. After we deliver you, you will survive, and we will die.” When the Xalya Dungeon is about to fall under the attack of an alliance of savages, the last lord of the steppe entrusts his firstborn with a painful mission: Dashvara has to pass himself off as a member of an enemy clan, as a Shalussi, to exact revenge in a shameful way. Forced to see his people killed or enslaved, this heartbroken but still proud and humorous steppe man will soon be dragged in a surprising adventure that will shake his will and beliefs. This story follows Dashvara as he struggles through foreign lands and discovers that the world is not only made of deserts and horses but also of “civilized” societies with strong bureaucracy and slave-based systems. Author's note: The fantasy setting has some ancient Roman influences. Also, expect a bit of slice-of-life and comedy along Dashvara's philosophical journey. Despite the “gore” tag, violence is not the focus of this story and descriptions are not particularly gruesome. Updates Mondays and Fridays. This is a Creative Commons By work. It is a reworked and continued translation of a trilogy I wrote in Spanish between 2016 and 2018.
