《Tales of Erets Book One: The Crusade of Stone and Stars》Chapter XXI Part II

In the monastery of the Inquisition, many many miles away from the village where Milo and Sarahi had their honeymoon, Father Gonen, the Grand Inquisitor, summoned Enoch to meet with him in his office. Enoch was not an inquisitor, but rather he was a warrior of the Inquisition, of a special order called “The Witch-Hunters.” Now the order did more than hunt witches at this point, but that was their original intention. They were meant to be so strong, so cunning that magic was no advantage over them, and after hundreds of years of honing their skills and their brutal methods it was so.
Enoch was a strong young man, just a few years older than Grigori. Unlike Grigori, Enoch was not so scrawny and lithe. Rather he was very obviously strong, with a neck so thick it almost looked as if his head and neck were one, save for the strong, pronounced jaw and chin. Enoch's head was totally shaven bald, and every day he took a straight-edge razor to it to keep it that way. His eyes were a soft shade of brown, but at the same time there was nothing soft about them, they held a murderous intensity and an utter lack of caring. Enoch's mouth was constantly turned down in a cruel frown, and he walked everywhere he went with a quick and confident pace, as if he were always in a hurry. Enoch wore a priestly cassock, like Grigori, but it was a dark shade of red, with a hood, meant to strike fear into the hearts of any heretics, blasphemers, or sinners in the Inquisition's jurisdiction.
“You wanted to see me, Father?” Enoch asked as he knelt before the Grand Inquisitor. Such a man was not called upon idly, and Enoch knew that. If Father Gonen had summoned him there must be something of tremendous import.

“Yes, Brother Enoch,” Father Gonen said. In the Inquisition anyone in the employ of the Church was called by the title “Brother” except for the Grand Inquisitor himself. “It concerns Brother Grigori. You know of his mission in the Arxian capital city, attempting to proselytize to the King there?”
“Yes, I know of it.”
“Well, Sandalphon has been keeping track of him, and I, in turn, have been asking Sandalphon for regular updates,” Father Gonen hesitated before continuing. “Recently Brother Grigori said the prayer of the dead.”
“The one a follower of the True Way speaks before taking his own life?” Enoch said, somewhat surprised. “He's a very brave man, an example to us all and we should honor his sacrifice with a fitting funeral.”
“There's a problem, though,” Father Gonen said. “After Brother Grigori finished the prayer Sandalphon knows not what happened to him.”
“How can that be?”
“Sandalphon is not all-powerful, Brother Enoch, we all know that, neither is he all-knowing. He is only able to watch those who hold the True Way in their hearts, the truly faithful, and when the truly faithful die Sandalphon watches as they enter into Heaven. For Sandalphon to have lost track of Grigori one of two things must have happened, either his soul was too tainted by sin and the demons claimed him, or he has fallen away from the true way, become a heretic and a blasphemer.”
“No!”
“Yes, I fear that Brother Grigori may be lost to us. I want you to find out what happened. Travel to the Arxian capital in disguise, and once you're there find out what fate has befallen Brother Grigori. If he has fallen to the demons there's nothing we can do about it.”

“And if he's become a heretic?”
“We cannot allow a heretic who knows what he knows about the Inquisition to survive. If he's a heretic then he's the enemy now, and we will not suffer an enemy who knows our every secret to live. If he no longer follows the True Way then you must kill him.”

Mother of Learning
Zorian is a teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. He is a driven and irritable young man, consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, whom he resents for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, he has no time for pointless distractions or paying attention to other people's problems. As it happens, time is something he is about to get plenty of. On the eve of the Cyoria's annual summer festival, he is killed and brought back to the beginning of the month, just before he was about to take a train to Cyoria. Suddenly trapped in a time loop with no clear end or exit, Zorian will have to look both within and without to unravel the mystery before him. And he does have to unravel it, for the time loop hadn't been made for his sake and dangers lurk everywhere... Repetition is the mother of learning, but Zorian will have to first make sure he survives to try again - in a world of magic, even a time traveler isn't safe from those who wish him ill. ********************************** If anyone is interested, I have a story-related worldbuilding site that can be found here. I don't update it as often as I should, but there is a fair amount of content there already. It also contains a page with all the fanart, fan translations, audio books and the like - you can reach it directly by clicking this link. I have a patreon account for those kind people that want to give me money. It also contains info for those who want to donate via paypal. The story was originally posted on fictionpress, back in 2011. When I reached chapter 91, I started uploading the story to RoyalRoad, one chapter per day. The story will continue to be updated on fictionpress as well as here, and can be reached by clicking on this link if somebody is interested, though at this point there is nothing there that isn't also on RoyalRoad. ********************************** The cover you see on the side has been made by a fellow RoyalRoad user Sydorow. Just Don't Shoot the Quartermaster
Aliens are real! And monsters! But that's racist, don't call them that. And there's magic too! The life of humble, hard-working Carioca*¹² Rafael Barro is thrown into disarray when the interstellar Multi-Unity Alliance comes knocking. During the negotiations to take Earth in as a Protected Member-Planet for the glory of our AI overlords, the aliens ‘accidentally’ break the Veil that keeps the mythics protected from humanity’s knowledge, revealing the creatures of legend and myth that were hiding among us for millennia — from the doorman to global leaders. After a series of mishaps in his ever chaotic Brazil, our intrepid hero decides to join the Unity's Army, where he ends up as a inglorious… quartermaster. The Unity takes all recruits to make matters worse, including the mythics! And the cherry on the damn pie is Rafael Barro’s extra assignment: writing this historical first-hand report on the wonders of Earth’s diversity, the seamless adaptation of all its members, and on his gallant units’ first stellar expedition ever to defend another precious*³ world! Are we talking about the same planet? (Reader discretion is advised; Contains Graphic Language and Potentially Excessive Swearing) *¹ Carioca = demonym of someone from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. *² humble and/or hardworking Cariocas = not necessarily mythics, ordinary ones actually exist. *³ precious = inasmuch every living planet is precious. Editor's Note: Someone disable his permission to edit the draft on UnityDocs, please! Hello, I'm McKing and I aim to write an original story with elements I've never seen put together before. Feel free to point out any mistakes you see — I'm not a native speaker, so I'm sure a few will pass me by. Sci-fi; Humor; (Brazilian) Urban Fantasy; faint shades of LitRPG. **Be warned it has a bit of an (absurd) slice-of-life beginning though the story is being subtly (I hope) worked on and eventually shifts gears (a bit). I planned to say that from the beginning, but I forgot to add it.** I hope that you enjoy it and that I can grow as a writer with your contributions. No Fixed Update Schedule. My inspiration comes in bursts and so will the Chapters. Sorry if that displeases you (I love regular updates too), but I'm afraid that's the best I can do for now. Keep in mind that it is a work in progress and things can eventually change a bit - I'll try to always note the changes. Sorry for the bad cover, it was the best my sorry skills could do! I hope you enjoy it,Mcking

The Hunt
Cecily's blade swung, hitting its mark as always. The man's arm fell to the cold grass of the prison with a familiar thud. He let out a blood curdling scream. A warning to the rest. Stay away, the Hunter is here. That's the name they'd given her, the Hunter. After she cut off the man who tried to rape hers masculinity, they stayed away. She'd made it clear anyone who tried to touch her would be hunted and slaughtered. Cecily kneeled down, pushing the man's face into the dirt so she could use his back as a seat while she trifled through his belongings. "You're hurting my ears," she told him, no remorse in her voice. "Quiet down before I really do kill you."The man but his lip, well aware that she wasn't lying. Sobs shook him, making for an uncomfortable seat. She, however, didn't particularly feel the beed to kill him. It happened, not often, but it did. "Oh, hush up," she hissed, taking out a bag of rations with her metal hand, "it doesn't hurt that bad."With her good, human hand, she dropped the plastic bag of food into her own bag. She pushed up, off the man back. As she was about to walk away, bag slung over her shoulder, brushing against her autumn colored braid, she turned back to him. "Consider yourself lucky," she said, no hatred in her voice, there never was. "Consider yourself lucky that you didn't do anything stupid. And even luckier if one of the scum bagged criminals in here feel a little light in their hearts and help you. Consider yourself luckier if you die there."With that, her old black and white Nike sneakers carried her off into the brush of the huge prison.
