《Incomplete》Chapter 29 "The New Challenge"

After parting with JJ, Leo’s mind instead of being at ease from training he felt even more confused. If it was true that Jenny ended here hoping to find him wouldn’t that mean she still had feelings for him.
Thinking about love caused him to think about Mary, she confessed to him the day before he ended here or at least he thought she did. It was already a month since then. He wondered what she was doing now. Till now he avoided thinking about it too much since he could do nothing about it but now the thoughts forced themselves on his mind.
He wondered how would he answer her in the end, back then he would have answered positively, probably, but right now he was starting to feel effects of his past memories setting in and the memories of him and Jenny were getting him all confused. Especially now that he saw her alive. He thought what he felt for her and part of him wanted to say he loved her but part of him rejected it. It felt like if him and Arthur were fighting on the topic.
Walking along the corridor he suddenly heard a voice. It was still early in the morning so it was quite unexpected. Continuing forward he noticed that the sound was coming out of commander doors, they were opened slightly. It was weird considering those were automatic doors.
“I can’t really do that. There are no urgent operations that would require your attention and your squad needs you as an instructor.” He heard Commander Alexander saying.
He tried to see who he was talking to but the small hole only allowed him to see a small part of the office.
“On top of that don’t you have duties for the military here lieutenant?” continued the commander.
“I don’t think that under current condition my work here will be productive. I think it would be better to send me somewhere else.” Said the other person.
Leo instantly realized that the other person who was speaking was Jenny. Without realizing what he was doing he swung the door open despite the resistance they offered and shouted “You can’t!”
Both of them looked at him but while Jenny was shocked to see him there Mr Alexander only smiled.
“What are you doing here?!” she asked surprised.
Leo stayed silent for a while and wondered himself ‘what the hell he was doing’.
“Oh, Leo, it’s good you joined us… but was there really a need to destroy the door?”
Leo looked around and noticed that the door was bent in a weird direction. “Aaaaah, what have I done?! I’m very sorry!” he shouted.

“Don’t worry about it. I needed a new door anyway. Since those didn’t close properly sometimes.” He smiled and winked at him in such a way that Jenny didn’t notice.
“Who cares about some door? What are you doing here?” Jenny asked again.
“I… well I heard some voice in the corridor and then it was you and then I heard that you wanted to leave and…” he didn’t know what to say and started mumbling incoherent words.
“So what do you mean by I can’t leave?” she continued.
“I well, we just met… again and I thought that maybe we could talk or something.” Leo said.
“Something you say.” She looked at him annoyed.
He thought that maybe he should be more decisive about it but he himself was not sure what he wanted.
“I think Leo is right.” Said the commander. Both of them looked at him. “I don’t think that escaping from the problem would provide a satisfactory solution to anyone.” He looked at Jenny, she tried her best to keep any emotions from getting to her face. “Just talk about it and discuss what both of you want. I can even… well today won’t work. I can give you tomorrow free to do so.”
“Could we go outside for that?” asked Jenny, seemingly accepting the situation. Her voice was calm.
“You want to go on a date already? I can’t let that happen just yet though. Leo can’t just walk outside like that normally.”
“It wouldn’t be a date.” said Jenny. “I just wanted to show him someplace.”
“I see.” Mr Alexander smiled. “In four hours it will be time for you to wake up, so maybe you should go and rest for now.”
“I will excuse myself then.” Jenny turned around and left the room through the broken door.
“Ah, please wait.” Said Leo he didn’t know what to say after that though.
She turned around and looked at him for a while in silence. He tried to smile at her but it turned out quite awkward.
“We will see each other tomorrow. Right?” he asked uncertainly.
She smiled back at him. “Despite how you look, you seem quite similar.” Realizing what she said small blush appeared on her face. “Anyway, we will see each other tomorrow. Don’t worry so much, I won’t run away from my duties. Well then, goodnight.” She turned around and this time went away.
“Goodnight.” After saying this Leo turned around to Mr Alexander.
“Is there something more you need?”

“I wanted to thank you for the door and apologize for breaking them again.” Said Leo bowing slightly.
“Don’t worry about it.” He dismissed it with his hand.
“Can I ask how did you know that I was going to pass through here?” asked Leo.
“Just a lucky coincidence. I saw you passing on camera and thought that you would make it easier to deal with her.” He scratched his head. “Well, you should go to sleep I doubt Etan will go easy on you just because you are tired.”
“Yes, I can’t see that happening earlier.” said Leo. “Sorry again and goodnight commander.” Said Leo and turned to leave the room.
“Ah and with Lieutenant Jenny.”
Leo turned around “Yes?”
“Just be honest with yourself it will be for the best in long-term.”
Leo stayed silent for a while “… yes.”
-*-
Leo stood up tiredly from his bed. In the end, he couldn’t fell asleep for the whole night. Maybe he would get to faint during training.
He spent whole night thinking what he thought about the current situation. How he could be honest if he wanted two different things.
Entering the training hall and heading to where his team usually met, he noticed Jenny standing there and speaking to what looked to be her team. He remembered hearing from Mr Alexander that she was an instructor here. She didn’t seem to notice him though.
He continued looking at her as he headed to his gathering spot.
“Who is she?” he was suddenly asked. Looking back he saw Jennifer standing in front of him. “And why did you leave me alone yesterday so suddenly?”
“Well, technically it was today.” said Leo.
“Don’t change the subject.” She said. It was clear she was angry at him. “And why do your eyes look like Black’s”
Black didn’t even move at the mention of him.
“Ah, well I couldn’t sleep well.” explained Leo.
“So what were you doing?” she questioned him.
Leo didn’t know how to answer that.
“He was probably thinking about his lover.” said JJ.
“Lover!?” she screamed surprised. The people around them started paying them attention.
“It was all in the past life.” He said silently so that no one would hear and shoot a glare to JJ. The big man just brought his arms up. “Be calm, I will explain. Please.”
Leo started explaining what his relationship with Jenny was and why he was so surprised to see her. It took a while to explain the situation to her to the point where she was satisfied.
“So, who is she to you?” asked Jennifer, for some reason after listening to his explanation she got excited about the situation. It looked as if she had stars in her eyes.
“Eh… I don’t know.” He said. “I mean it’s so sudden. I didn’t expect for anyone from that time to be still alive. I’m confused right now. Part of me is happy but there was also a girl in school that I think I like.”
“Eh? You didn’t tell me anything about that.” Said Jennifer.
“It’s not something I want to talk about. I doubt she would want to meet me now anyway and I have no way of meeting her.”
“Oh. Sorry.” said Jennifer. “So what are you going to do?”
“I don’t know. We are going to talk things out tomorrow apparently. Commander will even give us a free day for this or something.” Said Leo.
“He can be nice like that. I guess I will leave it at that today but I want a full report about what will happen tomorrow.” ended Jennifer. She was smiling for some reason. Leo couldn’t say what was going on in her head.
“Yes. I will be happy if you leave that for later too.” They heard a voice behind them. Knowing fully well who it was they turned around and stood at attention.
“Instructor Etan.” Said Jennifer.
“Today training will be little different. Get your armor and meet me in room number 3.” He said nonchalantly and moved away.
Leo shuddered, from his experience from yesterday he was sure that didn’t mean anything good.
After changing and entering the room they were greeted by what looked to be an enormous forest. The trees were so tall that Leo couldn’t even see their tops. The trees were a fair bit away from each other so they didn’t cover the whole sky.
Mr Etan was standing in front of them as they entered the place. “Today's training will show how well you work together as a team. We recently received quite a lot of good data on elves you see. Your objective is to survive in this copy of the Forest Continent and make it to the gathering point.”
He passed Jennifer a backpack and left the room without waiting for them to ask any questions. The door behind him closed and disappeared leaving them alone in the big forest.

The Eternal Vigil
The year is 2220, a time when governments and nation-states are slowly becoming a thing of the past. Instead, all prominent parts of human society are now organizing around the commands of three great Artificial Intelligences, owned and operated by the world's largest corporation. World peace has been achieved, and the very word 'politics' has disappeared from people's lips. Religion has largely disappeared, replaced in some parts by worshipping of the great AIs, but mostly substituted by a devotion to material goods and faith in the market. There is now a general consensus that the best form of government has been found. No, it is not democracy, nor is it autocracy or oligarchy. Instead, it is technocracy - rule by the learned, the intelligent, and the skilled. And who are more learned, intelligent, and skilled than the great AIs? Exactly, no one. The AIs will correct some market failures once in a while, but shall otherwise let the market be free. After all, the freer the market, the freer the people. Some may question how society advanced to this stage, but that is all they will do - question. Because they will not find answers, for history is no longer taught anywhere. After all, it is not a practical subject. One cannot get a decently paying job with a history degree. Society doesn't have any time for people to idly ponder about the past. No, this is a practical society of practical people: engineers, doctors, lawyers, developers, managers, bankers, soldiers, and the such. My name is Aiden Scivit and I used to be one such practical man: minding my own business, doing my job, with the faith that hard work will always be rewarded by the market...and that politics and philosophy were things thought of by idly people who leech off society. But this all changed, and here is my story, my history. Just because the stories of ages long past have been erased, does not mean that a brand new beginning cannot be created. The story is already finished but I still need to do some editing so a chapter should be released each day for a month. It is a bit political, as you can probably tell by the introduction, so there is that (it will low-key read like a philosophy dump 10% of the time, so really it's like Atlas Shrugged but liberal and worse lol). Also, I actually wrote this in grade 10 as part of my MYP Personal Project, and recently touched up on it for online publication. Finally, if you find the writing style passable and are interested in my other works, check out the one in the link below. It is a fantasy set in the Ancient Greek world, and is completed and uploaded in full: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/35099/the-oresteia-modernized
