《Matters of the Heart》Chapter 6

Terra felt horrible for leaving the court without saying goodbye to Jareth again, but she had had no choice. The road before her was long and she had needed all the time she could get. Two days had since passed and she was nearing her destination. She wondered if Jareth had received her letter and would come at the appointed time like she had asked him too. She could only hope her friend would choose to trust her.

Terra looked around at the fireflies flitting around her. Up ahead, she could see the glade where she was supposed to go. She wove her way through the trees, letting her fingers glide over the rough bark of each one. She loved the feeling.

Terra stepped into the wide glade and took a deep breath, feeling exhilarated. She'd never been beyond the border of the Fae kingdom before, and though she hadn't ventured too far from the safety of her home, she couldn't help but feel the thrill of possible danger.

She looked up at the dark sky. The moon was full and bright tonight. It seemed like some sort of omen of good fortune. She continued forward. In the light of the moon, she could make out the stone steps leading up to the worn-looking pedestal. It was all overgrown with vines and other plants, but it seemed to add to the ancient look of the thing. And it was ancient. Just how ancient, Terra had no clue. She mounted the stairs confidently, keeping her eyes fixed on the prize.

The object of her fixation was a tall, ornate mirror. It was a thing of legend. A portal that had stood since near the dawn of time. She brushed her fingers over the carved frame, a feeling of awe sending shivers down her spine. When she at last managed to stop gaping at the relic, she began examining it with more purpose. The surface of the looking glass shimmered and shone. Instead of seeing herself, Terra saw a vague swirling mist. She took a steadying breath and pressed the tips of her fingers to the cold glass.

"Show me what it is I wish to see," she said clearly.

The mist vanished, replaced by a homely sight. It was somebody's bedroom.

Terra settled down to wait. This was going to take a while.
