《This world is strange》Chapter 34. Travel

While walking they were talking about basic stuffs and magical things Joseph didn't know about. By night they've found a strange cave. In the middle of the open field there was a hill with a hole on one of the side, which led underground.
"We are staying here for the night."
Joseph was confused.
"Isn't it occupied?"
Catherine looked at him smiling.
"Not for long."
She held out his right hand to her side and a staff materialized. Then she swung it forward a few dozen magic arrows shot out of it going underground. They seemed to follow the directions where the cave was going. Joseph was standing there amazed.
"You can controll your magic far better than you think Joe! You can easily make the arrows seek out the enemies and kill them."
He thought he was stupid. He had the ability to make the spells do whatever he wants, but he did not even thought about homing missiles.
"Though it is good you didn't use a spell like this in the rift, because if the golems would've used it against you... I think you would've died."
"True. But I could've used it elsewhere."
She looked at him.
"You can use it from now on. Anyway the goblins inside are all dead."
"Goblins?"
"Yeah. Nasty creatures feeding off of other humanoids's flesh."
"I know. What I mean is, what are they doing here?"
She shrugged and walked in. Joseph followed her into the deeper parts. It was a simple cave with only a few sideways and it was littered with dead goblins. The whole place was strenghened with wooden bars to support the ceiling. In the inner part there was a slighly big room with a campfire in the middle and a goblin sitting on a chair, wearing ornaments.

"The leader of the goblins."
Joseph looked around scanning for usable stuff.
"I don't see any valuable here."
"It seems these were really weak goblins. Also there are no prisoners here."
She used a spell which lift up all the bodies and flew them out of the room. Then Joseph used a spell to clean the place so they can sleep there.
"Not bad. It's a really usefull spell and I thought you don't know any utility spells."
"Well I know quiet a lot of spells, but I'm not able to cast them, or they are just problematic to use."
"Really? Can you show me a few more?"
"Maybe later, I'm almost out of manna and if I continuously use all my mana..."
"Oh right. You were in the cage of that hag. Never mind, you'll show it later then. Let us rest."
Joseph took out some food and they ate it. It was the last of what he had on him so they'll need to find something the next day.
In the morning they resumed to their journey. After a few hours of walking they spotted a wheat field in the distance. Joseph was more happy about it than Catherine.
"It seems like there are people living there. Let me take a look!"
Catherine looked at him with sparkling interest in her eyes.
"You know a spell for that?"
"Sorta. I've never tried it."
She watched him while he closed his eyes and imagined an eyeball appearing above him and flying up in the sky, then he concentrated on it, to exchange his left eye's vision with it. He used the eye's angle of view to look around, then moved it closer to the field. There was a village there with a few houses, but it was too far and he didn't have enough mana to keep it up so the spell ceased to work. He got back his old vision and he opened his eyes panting and sweating.

"I saw a village, there were humans, or something human shaped creatures there. It is not that far, I think we'll reach it before nighfall."
"Interesting. I like the spell you just used. I might try it out later."
Joseph was supprised.
"Do you not know any spell like that?"
"Hahaha... Do you think I don't? I just need a mirror, or something that reflects pictures as a canvas to see what the spell sees. But it seems like you did it without canvas. Care to explain how?"
Joseph smiled at her.
"There is a pretty good canvas with you all the time."
She looked at him puzzled.
"It is your imagination. As you imagine things you can see pictures, can't you? Then what stoppes you to see the things the spell wants to show? It's easy! It's that you are already looking at something. But if you make it blank, like closing your eyes, then you have a perfect canvas."
"I see!"
'Though I'm just guessing that it would work. I only used my ability to do it, so I'm not even sure if that will work... I'm curious if that could actually work.'
She closed her eyes and after a few minutes opened it.
"I couldn't make it work. But I think if I practice I can do it!"
She was smiling brightly.
"Finally a spell that noone else knews... I mean appart from you that is. But you are my apprantice, so it doesn't matter!"
'You apprantice just taught you a spell! But well... She knows a lot more then me about these things, so I'm still happy about that she teaches me.'
As they were walking closer something came into his mind.
"Catherina. Is it hard to read someone's mind?"
She looked supprised at this question.
"Reading minds? Hmmm... I'm not familiar with such a magic and never heard of one. But I think if it's possible, it would take a lot of practice and mana. An ordinary creature couldn't do it. Maybe one that lived a few hundred years?"
"Ah... So that's why."
"What do you mean? Have you met someone who could do it? Can you introduce them?"
"I mean yeah. I've met a few elfs who lived for thousand years. They could do it. But it seemed like everyone around them could speak telepathically as well."
"The two things are different. Sending a message and reading a mind. It's like hearing someone or reading from their their lips."
"Oh I see... Also I can introduce them, when we get there. They should be at the place we are heading to."
"That is nice. I hope they'll teach me how to do it."
"They might."
They continued on their way.
