《This world is strange》Chapter 14. New old work

Next morning he woke up to someone's knocking on the door.
"It is morning allready! Time to wake up!"
He got out of bed and opened the door. A maid was standing in the door.
"Good morning! Master Flinn sent me to wake you up. Now that my job is done I'll take my leave."
"Thank you!"
He didn't know what to say, the maid just walked away from the door in the hallway.
'Seems like they woke me up at least. But she didn't seem too friendly, just like the others.'
He got dressed up and went to the hallway, from there he wanted to go to the office, so knocked on a door, which lead there, but there was no answer. He opened the door.
"Excuse me!"
The room was empty. It was a smaller room with a desk with writing equipment on the top, a chair next to it, and a shelf with documents. There was a window and a door leading somewhere in the room as well.
'Seems like I'm early.'
Just as he thought about it, the other door opened up. It lead to a bigger office, which looked almost the same, but it had a few paintings and sofas.
"Finally you showed up!"
Flinn entered the room through the door.
"8 am has already passed at least half an hour ago!"
"What? The maid just woke me up a few minutes ago."
"Really?"
Flinn fidgeted with a pen in his hand.
'A pen? I thought they only have quills and such.'
"So they are that stubborn. It seems like they don't like you. But never mind that for now. I'll introduce the daily routine and your work here."
'So we're just gonna ignore that I was late for now? I'm lucky!'

"Lucky or not, you still have to learn at least the basic magics!"
'He read my thoughts again...'
They proceeded to the daily stuffs. It was pretty simple. Everyone got food in their offices at 9 am, there was lunch at 12 pm and dinner at 6 pm in the dining hall. Bath for man was after 9 pm. The work time was from 8 am to 15 pm. Other than that he was free. But they had to work every day, without any spare time.
The work wasn't that hard. He had to do counting, statistics and enlist the people who come to the office. Other outside works might occure time to time, but they'll speak about it when they have to do it.
"Also I forget about mentioning, but you have access to the training hall as well. It is a strenghened place in the mansion, where you can cast spells that would destroy things. You can use that place to practice, but do not join in the practice fights. Even though you can't die thankfully to the warding spells, but it can really hurt."
"I understand. I won't do it, unless I'm preapered!"
"Good. Now you should start working."
Flinn went back through the door he came in.
'It seems like I have the same job even though I'm in a different world. But at least there are fun things I can do, like magic and stuff.'
He looked around the previous documents and learned about the working of the place and everything he could. He memorized the ongoing projects and necessery things.
'It is simple, but there are actual mistakes here and there. I should make a report about these. I just hope noone will come in today, so I can concentrate on this work.'

The time went by really fast. He only noticed that Flinn came outside of his office.
"It is time for lunch."
"It is? I didn't even notice the time."
He just said it, because of habit, because he didn't even know the time.
"I'll teach you these spells after work. Don't worry about it."
They went to have lunch and came back to work. In the afternoon he finished the report he was working on and knocked on the indoor of the office.
"Come in."
As he walked in he saw Flinn writing something on a paper.
"I've found mistakes in the counting and made a report about it. I would like to ask you to read it."
Flinn took it and started to read it. After finishing he had smile on his face.
"Hahaha! Just as I expected! You have passed my test!"
"Test?"
"Yes! Did you really think I would just put you in my office withouth a mentor or test?"
He didn't even think about the most basic thing. Mainly because it was so natural for him to work in an office, that he didn't even think about it.
"Now take care of these contracts."
He handed Joseph a stack of papers.
"How much time do I have? I might not be able to finish it today."
"It doesn't matter for now. Do it as fast as you can, but do not make mistakes."
He was kind of gloomy, but it was still better than the last workplace, where they always shouted at him to do it faster and faster.
"Then I'll be working on it."
He left the room and returned to his desk.
After a while Flinn came out of his office.
"The work time is over. You can leave now."
"Just a minute! I'll finish this one and leave."
"As you please. But you have to come for dinner. Noone can leave it out, or they will be punished."
Flinn proceeded to the door. Then Joseph remembered the kid in the library.
"Excuse me."
"Yes?"
"There was a kid in the library yesterday. You said noone can skip dinner, but I didn't see any kids at it yesterday."
Flinn's hand stopped before grabbing on the door's handle and looked like he saw a ghost.
"You saw a kid in the library?"
"Yes? Why?"
He opened the door hastly and left. Outside the door it was the library, not the hallway.
'Who is that kid? Never mind. I should finish this one, then I'll head to the training hall to try out one-two things.'
