Author's Corner: Side story that I felt like writing since there aren't any VRMMO stories like it.

Prologue: Character Creation

When I found out that the newest VRMMO World of Destiny used the newest nanotech capsule to rehab injured people in a more fun manner, I was ecstatic! Not only could I regain my leg, I could also kill to my heart’s content!

Being a game, it would not be rare to find people who spent all day killing stuff; in fact, it would be seen as normal! Fortunately, the creators of World of Destiny have made the majority of the MMOs I’ve played in the past, so no problem learning the mechanics. Of course they love the whole, spend an eternity reaching level 100 model, but that’s fine as I’m stuck in the stupid game for a year anyways!

Unfortunately this game has a 1:1 time ratio as any other ratio and the rehab wouldn’t work as the stuff you do in game gets transferred to the capsule and then to the body. Only difference is, World of Destiny is a pure game, 99% realism with 100% game mechanics. You don’t need to eat or sleep in the game, food increases energy or health only, same as a potion only with a different cooldown and only useable out of combat. However, I read that meditation can increase your energy bar or qi as some are starting to call it.

Qi is not a new concept, it can be used to increase quality of life to a large margin, only it’s super hard to train in and most people’s meridians are not good enough to get very far. I even heard that with the $100,000 capsule, if I learn how to push qi through my meridians in game, the nanotech will fix my meridians in real life and help me utilize it here as well!

At first losing my leg to a drunk driver in high school was the worst thing ever, especially since I could no longer catch bugs afterwards! How am I supposed to kill bugs if I cannot catch them! Yes I know I’m a psychopath but at least it only makes me kill, it doesn’t make me kill people, that is my only saving grace. Especially since I’m rich, or rather my dad is, and the settlement from the drunk driver case made me rich as well, at least rich enough to waste $100,000 on a capsule and even buy the first year’s subscription as well as all my utilities in advance.

It really sucks that I was top of my class in both athletics and grades, but losing my leg right before graduation destroyed all my after school plans. No way was I going to college when I had more money that I’d ever be able to spend. That is why I spent all day playing MMOs and killing pixels, it helped the craving but wasn’t enough.

I knew I had to do something or I’d snap and then next thing I know the mailman will be dead and I’m sitting in prison. I can’t have that! World of Destiny is my only hope! Who knows, maybe some of my old athletics will help me in game, though all I’ve been able to train the past few years now that I’m 22 is my dexterity. I’m also very good with a knife, but who knows how that will play in game.

“Sir? Your capsule is set up in the main room, I’m leaving now.” –Random Delivery Guy

“Thanks! Tip is on the counter near the door, I’d see you out but as you can see, that’s too much work.” –Feng Jun (Me)

Finally! The capsule is set up, now to get all my shit in order so I can go MIA for a full year.

*RING* *RING*

“Hello?” –Unknown

“Hey dad it’s me Jun.” –Me

“Jun? Why are you bothering me? You know I’m busy and don’t have time to deal with your shit!” –Feng Zi (Dad)

“Oh no, I’m not asking for anything. I’m using the new nanotech capsule to regrow my leg, but I’ll be in the game World of Destiny for the next year for rehab. So if you need to contact me, you won’t be able to. Not that you will but just letting you know in case you wonder why I didn’t bother you for a year.” –Me

“Oh that’s all? Well that’s good news right? Win win no? I won’t have to hear from you, and when you are done you will have your leg and maybe will be able to do something with your life!” –Dad

“Yes yes dad, love you to. Bye!” –Me

“Bye.” –Dad

*CLICK*

I’d call my friends and the rest of my family if I had any, but my other died in the same accident that took my leg and ever since my dad has been super distance. Since it’s been a little over 4 years I also have no friends as they all went on with their life and did other things. And I can’t consider people I played video games with as my friends.

It’s also time for a new life and a new identity, so no more using my normal gaming nickname Crazy Jun, this time I’ll be a new person, one more like who I really am! I will remake myself and finally have freedom! And with that I turn off everything but my internet and power and strip myself to get in the capsule. Fortunately my upper body is strong so getting in isn’t that difficult.

ACTIVATE! –Me

And with that my vision goes dark for a few moments then a bright light hits my eyes. Once it calms down I see myself facing a little fairy with wings.

“Uh hello?” –Me

“Hi, I’m the A.I. that will help you create your character and send you into the world.” –Fairy A.I.

“Do you have a name?” –Me

Let’s just say it’s been a few years since I’ve talked to a female so even a computerized fairy is enough to get me talking.

“No, why would I have a name? No one has given me one and no one has ever cared to… Do you want to give me a name?” –Fairy A.I.

“Sure, how about Faefae?” –Me

Yes I know, my naming sense is horrible, but who cares! It’s not every day you get to talk to a cute girl, even if she has wings and is 24” tall.

“Yes, I like this name! Thank you for naming me!” –Faefae

“No problem! I’m happy to make a beautiful girl such as you smile.” –Me

“*BLUSH* So, you don’t mind if I stick around you do you? As an A.I. I get bored, I’m able to follow and watch an adventurer though if I get permission. I just never found one worth following.” –Faefae

“Uh… sure? What exactly will that entail?” –Me

“Oh nothing much, I get to see what you see, and I’m able to talk directly to you inside your head is all. You can also talk back so we can be buddies forever!” –Faefae

Hum… Having an A.I. in my ear may not be a bad thing. I must play this cool, surely she can give me some unfair advantage if I play my cards right. But being an A.I. she will definitely not help me if I directly ask for me, must be smooth!

“That’s great! Having a beautiful voice in my ear is my biggest dream!” –Me

Right next to watching paint dry and eating glass.

“Yay! Okay now let’s make your character! First choose a name, a first and last name is required to interact with NPC and a nickname which will be used for talking to players. Your nickname must be unique, it is how you can send tells and mail to other players as the NPC name is only used by NPCs.” –Faefae

“So my NPC name can be anything right? Make it Psychotic Death please.” –Me

“Sure! Oh cool, that name hasn’t been used yet! I’m going to lock it in for you since you are so nice, now no one can use it but you! And since it is unique, it can be used for your nickname as well meaning you only have the one name!” –Faefae

“That’s great Faefae, I am too lazy to think of a nickname as well, and since PCs are meant for killing it shouldn’t matter anyways.” –Me

“Oh are you a hunter of justice? Are you going to slay all the evil players out there? I can’t wait to see you in battle!” –Faefae

“Well about that… I can gain experience by killing players right?” –Me

“Yes, it’s even more than killing monsters, but only if you are red named, regulars do not gain any experience at all for killing players regardless if the player is red or not, only red names get experience for it. There are even outposts that cater to red players. Ooh are you going to be a red player? Become a bandit king? That should be fun!” –Faefae

Apparently she doesn’t care if I go good or evil, so long as I have a good adventure. I can play to this.

“I just don’t like cities and people much, so I’d rather kill them and gain experience off them as it should be faster.” –Me

“Well now that you chose a name you need to choose a race! Here is the race list and their bonuses.” –Faefae

Stamina 0.9Description: Wind Elves start off with wings but are very weak and squishy. Can evolve to Fairy or Humanoid Dragon after level 50 via various means. Dragons are not squishy.

Stamina 1.4Description: Barbarians are large Humans that make great tanks or warriors. Can evolve into various large winged species after level 50 via various means.

Stamina 0.9Description: Demons are a very strong and fast race that is squishy and makes mediocre casters. Can evolve into various higher Demon forms after level 50 via various means.

“Wow that’s a lot of info, especially the whole evolving thing. But it’s very vague, so how does evolving work?” –Me

“You can pay 100 gold at level 50 and pick one of the obvious choices or you can follow your heart and at level 50 complete some quest to evolve to a more distinct species.” –Faefae

“Well I like daggers and flying seems cool so it looks to be between wind elf and demon. Any suggestions?” –Me

“Well if you are going to be a PK then it has to be demon, Elves die too fast.” –Faefae

“Okay I’m sold, I choose Demon.” –Me

“Okay here is what you look like as a Demon, note you can only change very minor things, but after you evolve you may buy extra modules to change other features.” –Faefae

Then a mirror popped up in front of me showing what I look like as a Demon. 5’9” typical demon with black hair and glowing white eyes, only the hairstyle was slightly different than my idgaf style. Also a little on the skinny side but I did get lazy and didn’t work out as much so lost some definition, but I’d never get fat! The leathery wings are cool and so is the triangle tipped tail, but nothing I wouldn’t expect to see on a Demon so it’s all good. Of course my skin was red and I had pointy ears, so much for not being an Elf!

“So what can I change?” –Me

“You can change two things only and only by small amounts.” –Faefae

“Hum… give me back my muscle definition, I don’t wanna look this scrawny, also make me taller. How much taller can you make me?” –Me

“2 inches now and probably 3 inches once you evolve.” –Faefae

“Okay set both up now since you will be there if/when I evolve so I trust you.” –Me

“Yay he said he trusts me! Okay we are done here, next you just need to choose your starting class from fighter, rogue, healer, caster. You said you like daggers so I am assuming rogue?” –Faefae

“Yes rogue sounds fine, but what can I become at 10, I should probably set up my path now no?” –Me

“Rogue has 3 paths at 10, Assassin, Blademaster, and Archer. Of the 3, only Archer doesn’t use daggers, Blademaster can choose swords but my data tells me it’s better to use daggers even as a Blademaster, though don’t tell anyone I said this. It has to do with the stats per level you gain as a Blademaster vs an Assassin. Normally you would get 13 power and speed per level with your race, but with Blademaster you gain another 15 in both of those versus just gaining 10 power and 20 speed as an Assassin. Sure you are faster as an Assassin, but your attacks are weaker overall with daggers since Blademasters get parry and armor pen, Assassins just get backstab and other tricks.” –Faefae

“Wow a lot of info, okay I choose Rogue!” –Me

“Now you get to choose from starter village and tutorial. Tutorial has no set length and it is possible to reach level 10 and skip the starter village but that is up to you. Since you are handicapped it is recommended to go to tutorial since it has no time limit and can teach you how to move your character properly. You can also learn basic skills there and with my help I’ll be sure you get your starter rogue skills too!” –Faefae

“Well looks like you sold me into doing the tutorial, but what main city do I start with afterwards?” –Me

“It’s region locked, since you are in North America right now you will start in one of the three cities on the NA Country, you can choose which one, each city gives a different bonus and you can change them at any time. But if you are red, you won’t be able to enter them so it’s best to choose one and get your badge before you start to PK!” –Faefae

“Okay let’s do this!” –Me

And then everything went black and white again…
