《Round Two》Chapter 1 - People Like Us

Leo opens his heavy eyes, and looks around the room. “Hmm?” He hums. What happened? He wonders. This room… It's unfamiliar… He thinks to himself, trying to figure out his situation.
A head pops into Leo's vision and looks down at him.
“Hey, buddy. You're up. Good, I was tired of waiting. Here you go.” He says before throwing a phone onto Leo's chest, then dropping some keys onto the blanket as well. “The keys are for your apartment and your car. As for the phone, keep it on you at all times. You never know when a job will come through. Anyways, get up. I hate watching people rest while I’m still working.” He says, somewhat displeased.
Leo raises an eyebrow, confused. “What the fuck are you talking about?” He asks without consideration. “Also, where the fuck am I?” He continues to question.
The man frowns. “Damn. We got a feisty one. Alright. If you want an explanation, get your ass up. The pot of coffee should be brewed by now.” He says before exiting Leo’s vision.
Leo takes a breath and rubs his hands against his eyes. Fuck, alright. He thinks before moving the blanket aside and sitting up on the bed. He ignored the keys and phone for the moment.
Leo looks up at the man and examines him closely. He was wearing a black suit and a fedora, and he looked somewhat graceful as he poured himself a cup of coffee. Leo was somewhat reminded of his dad. Leo shakes his head and stands up. He looks around the room.
It was a large loft. From the bed he could see the kitchen and the living room, and from what he could see of the window, it overlooked a city. As for what city, Leo wasn’t sure. Leo frowns. This place isn’t my style. I prefer the privacy of a private bedroom. He thinks, before deciding to ignore that as well.

Leo walks over to the kitchen and dining area before pausing midway through. Leo raises an eyebrow, a little unsure of what was going on. My body? It’s full of energy? Wait a second… He says as he looks at his hands. No wrinkles? Leo thinks as his eyes widen. “What the fuck is going on?” He exclaims in a loud voice before looking at the man in the suit.
The man looks up and raises his mug of coffee. “I see you’ve noticed, friend. Let me be the first to welcome you back. From the dead, that is.” The man says before letting out a loud laugh.
Leo’s alert eyes continue to stare. What the fuck happened!? He thinks anxiously.
…
…
The man in the suit takes a sip of coffee before gesturing to the table. “Have a seat. I’ll explain. I was kind of hoping to be in and out, but the higher ups should consider this as work. And man do I love the reward for work.” He says with a smirk.
Leo frowns but he takes a seat anyway. He had a feeling that something wild was going on and he very much wanted an explanation.
The man continues to stand and lean against the counter while drinking coffee. “Do you want a cup? It’s still hot.” He says with a friendly smile.
“Cut the shit. Just explain what’s going on.” Leo says, making a hard stance.
The man in the suit lets out a sigh. “Why do I always end up with the hard-asses?” He complains to himself before pouring another cup of coffee. He takes the cup and walks over to set it before Leo before taking a seat himself. “Have some. Just relax. No matter how anxious you are, you’re in it now, so there’s no use getting weird about it.” The man says as he pushes the cup of coffee towards Leo before taking a sip from his own mug.

Leo lets out a sigh. “Fine.” He says before taking the mug and taking a gulp, letting the hot coffee burn the back of his throat. Leo lets out an exhale. “That’s not bad. The temperature is just right.” He says, calming himself.
The man in the suit smiles. “That’s my boy. Coffee. What can I say? It’s a simple happiness. Something even people like us can experience.” He says before taking another sip.
Leo raises an eyebrow. “People like us?” He asks, not quite sure what that meant.
The man smirks. “Yes, people like us. Like me, my good friend, you… You are now undead...” He says as he watches for the reaction in Leo’s eyes.
Leo raises an eyebrow before letting out a chuckle. “What the fuck are you talking about?” He asks without belief.

Please read the content warnings (there may be spoilers within though) if you have triggers. Also there is a slight mention of LGBTQ+, so please don't read this short story if even a short mention bothers you. ======================= My first short story (It's short - 5 chapters, 10,000 word-ish kinda short! And also completed *self pats* that I will be releasing in mini chapters (of 500-800 words each) on Fridays and Saturdays.). Happy to hear actionable and constructive criticisms on how I can improve, but please don't be too harsh okay? :) I know it's not perfect. But hey, we all have to start somewhere.

The Good Crash: An Oral History of the Post-Scarcity Collapse
"Don't we all feel, deep down, that we deserve the apocalypse?" APRIL, 2028—Global capitalism has collapsed. America has sealed itself off from the outside world, and inside its borders, a revolution rages. All it took was one incredible little machine. That machine turned into two, then four, then eight... like a virus, the replicators spread. As a work of oral history, The Good Crash features over 50 interviews with key witnesses to the events of 2027. The text is rendered in the words used by the interviewees themselves, with light editing for clarity and concision. As such, the book contains language and themes that are not appropriate for children.By capturing the voices to the people at the very root of the revolution, journalist and historian R. Vondersnitch has traced the origins and aftermath of the replicators' rapid spread. Crucially, the book also includes perspectives and testimony from those who attempted to stop the spread of the reps. "Some of these are heroes, too, in their own ways," the author writes in the book's introductory note.
