《Life Sentence》Apprehension

I fell in love with the man that killed me. Now, before you go judging me, you should probably hear my story first. It was a Thursday evening. I remember because Dad and I always go drinking at Barny’s pub on Thursdays.

I entered the room and was immediately sick to my stomach. I’ve seen dead bodies plenty of times since working for the SSC, but this was just revolting. Her skull was completely bashed in, her brain was all over the place, or at least what was left of it. The body was of a woman in her late twenties. She had blonde hair, blue eyes and one of those perfect little button noses that women always tried to get through surgery. She was wearing a light blue top with dark jeans and no shoes. I imagine that when she was alive her top would have matched her eyes, but now her gaze was vacant and both eyes were bloodshot. The blood from her wound had pooled around her, changing her blonde curls to a burnt copper.

The cleanup crew had already started making rounds. Such beauty wasted, and for what?

I went over and gently rested my hand on the victim’s forehead, making it appear as just brushing her hair back to view the wound closer. Then I saw it… The last few minutes of her life flashed before my eyes. I removed my hand from her cold clammy skin after gathering the information I needed. *Sigh*

“Homicide…?” Alaya reached out to me for answers. Alaya's my best friend and partner for as long as I can remember.

“More like involuntary Manslaughter.”

“Ah…” She responded.

My sighs began to echo as I recalled my vision. “It was an accident; he didn’t mean to hurt her.”Bethany and her Husband had gotten into an argument moment before her death. There was kicking and pulling on both sides. One thing led to another and he tossed her a little too hard. She fell, and the microwave followed; smashing in her head like a flattened tomato. It’s quite sad actually… He removed the microwave and tried to help but she was already gone.

“It was an accident,” I continued, “but rules are rules. Put out an APB for Devon Brown. Description: Tall, Caucasian male about 6ft1 inch; last seen wearing jeans and a red T-shirt. He’s probably scared. In my vision, he looked quite shaken, so go easy on him.”

“Got it, Sir.”

I’ve been appointed this post as head of the Department for nearly 6 months now, but I’m still not used to being called things like Sir and Chief. There is only one office above mine in the SSC, the head office, but I’m in no rush to get into that office. It was currently being held by my most respected colleague and old friend Jake. Jake was my mentor when I first started working in the force over 5 years ago.

“Wait, what are you still doing here?” Alaya teased. “It’s really not your thing to miss out on free booze before seven.”

“I’m not…” I confirmed. “I was just leaving actually. See you tomorrow?”

Alaya and I said our goodbyes as I made my way out of what used to be the home of Bethany and Devon Brown. I knew within my heart that it was truly an accident. I felt it, his guilt, his pain… when he lifted that microwave and saw that she was forever gone from him.

But this is the Genesis Era, and any and every crime, regardless of how little; from petty theft to premeditated murder and regardless of the circumstances surrounding them… is punishable by life in prison. Sometimes I hate the law, but this is the reality and this is the life I signed up for…

Like I said, it was a Thursday evening like any other day, when it happened. On my way home, I got a vision unlike any other and then… I crashed.

(Nick… Nick, can you hear me? )

What’s happening? Where am I?

I can’t feel my face! Wait, do I usually? I open my eyes to pale blue screens and the sterile smell of cleaning chemicals bombarded me. I had a killer headache, like the kind you get after downing two bottles of tequila. I manage to lift my hand and reach for the back of my head, an impulse to locate the source.

“Ah, my head… shit that hurts,” I cried out.

“Everything’s gonna be okay.” Alaya was standing by my side. It would appear that I am lying on a bed in the hospital. “The doctor said you suffered a mild concussion, but you’re gonna be okay. Your father is on his way.”

I found the strength to drag myself up, feeling around on my toes and patting myself down with my hands to make sure that everything was still working. Medicine has advanced significantly over time where limbs could be replaced but I was still very attached to my limbs…

“You were in an accident. You are lucky you weren’t that far from the Brown’s residence when it happened. We immediately swung back in your direction to get you.”

Oh no! “Did anyone else get hurt?”

“No, no one got hurt”

Ah, what a relief

“You did do a number on a tree, however!” She continued. I couldn’t help but chuckle. But that was Alaya for you, always managed to make even someone like me laugh.

“Do you remember what happened?”

I again began to scratch the back of my head, hoping that my rubbings will sooth the pain. “No, not real…”

*News Reporter* in other news, an eighteen-year-old boy; a student of the Tres University was taken from his home this afternoon and sent to jail for the murder of his mother’s boyfriend: thirty-eight-year-old Walter Mullings.

And then it all came back to me... my vision; the reason I crashed. It suddenly became difficult to breathe, the room was spinning and I felt an intense heat come over me. The pain in the back of my head was gone, and my face was flush with terror, I broke out in a cold sweat and I felt my heart shudder.

“What happened… what did you see?”

*News Reporter*He is scheduled to appear in front of the Judge tomorrow morning.

“That kid…”

*News Reporter* Neighbors are beyond shocked as it is reported that eighteen-year-old Alex was a model student; President of the Chess Club and an active member of the Gymnastic team.

“I saw it…” I couldn’t move. I couldn’t think. I was paralyzed with fear.

Alaya screamed as she couldn’t take it anymore “Nick… What’s the matter! What’s happening?!”

She grabbed my wrist to locate my pulse, only to find that my heart rate was indeed sped up. Completely lost to what’s happening she decides to reach out to me one more time before calling the doctors “What did you see? Tell me!”

I need to get a hold of myself.

I shut my mouth and swallowed my spit, then counted to ten. I gathered my thoughts as best I could and tried to pull myself together. When I finally calmed down and began to breathe steadily, I started to understand what had happened.

What I had felt and seen was unlike any other vision before it; powerful and real. My visions or premonitions usually last a few seconds and only show so much. But this one was intense. I felt the heat on my skin and smelt the barbecue of my thighs as the hungry flames consume me. I was paralyzed as my life was slowly snuffed away from me. And then I saw it…

“I saw in my vision… that boy! I saw my death…

And he’s gonna kill me!”

It’s December 31st, 2120. My name is Nicholas Bishop, and this is my story...
