《Peacekeepers (COMPLETE)》39

The file opens and Milo's garbled voice greets me, *Alice?* "It's Tango."
He smiles, *Right, medical files did say he almost died.* "What do have for me?"
*This is for Nick's eyes only.* I shrug, "I'm all you got." His metal fingers fidget before he disappears, *Fine.* A series of slides begin to show.
A board full of missing persons, a Peacekeeper whacking a woman surrendering, A purple liquid laying next to duffel bags inside a lab. I pause it, "Wait, that's in the Genesis Research Center." I stand up, "I killed someone trying to expose Peacekeeper?" Zack pats my back, "Don't dwell on it, he knew the risks."
Next a video, *Purple, as idiots call it, somehow appeared into the atmosphere, the soil and the oceans. When people and animals came into contact with it, it triggers our reptilian brain, destroying all logic. While some people were resistant to the particle, after affects are changes in the brain and small or drastic changes to a persons psyche, including splitting of personalities, unwanted thoughts, too many more to name.*
The video slides away, revealing another with a thumbnail that makes my eyes wanna pop out. I press play,
*Test number one of high dosage of Purple.* A man struggles to break free, moaning through a rag as another injects him with the purple liquid. The scientist runs out the room. The man goes limp for a moment, *Subject died at-* The man twitches violently. He rips the restraints off as his body blackens, *Subject underwent necrosis on a massive scale!* He smiled wide as sharp bits of bone came out of his wrists. *Oh shit! Everyone out now!* The man leaped at the glass and cracked it before the whole room was flooded with fire. He shrieks and flails as he burns away.

I pause it, looking back, Zack stares ahead as Note grins wildly, "What was that?" My hand trembles towards the spacebar,
The scientist was crying, *Test number thirty of purple dosing.* He walks into the room with a tank, up to a bald little girl hooked up to oxygen. *Are you still sure, Jill?* *I love you, dad.* He hugs her before switching out her tank. She slowly falls asleep, *I'm not leaving you, Jill.* The video cut to him in his chair, *Thirty days later, she seemed to fully recover, my little girl.* She came over with a full head of hair. "Jill? Jill?"
*Who are you? Get me out of here!* She starts to attack him, *Jill, stop!* He cut it off before the slide turns to a headline, "Freak accident leaves father and daughter dead."
I tear off the headphones and lean on the desk. Zack yells, "Peacekeeper's gotta tumble. Soon." I close my eyes, "But that'll bring war." "It has to happen, Tango." I wipe my face with my sweaty hands as he continues,
"Peacekeeper must be shut down, they will never stop." I sit back down and slap the headphones back on as another video comes on the screen. PurpleIncidentNickGarvey.mp4 I jump at the thumbnail, Nick's abhorred stare.

Northwoods Trapper
In the wild places of our planet, dark vestiges of our paranormal past yet cling to twisted life. In the past, the hunters and trappers of the world were tasked with removing such blights from society's fringes - legal assassins, enlisted to enforce the will of civilization against those unnatural, otherworldly hosts. Nowadays, we're not so lucky. With the idea of proper monster-hunting fading from public perception, the once-prestigious mantle is donned by amateurs, hobbyists, and self-taught warriors. It pays poorly, it's dangerous, and people would rather do something that gets them rich or famous or drowning in attention. Most often, new-age monster hunters are born from tragedy. They lack the tact, training, and funding of hunters passed. Instead, they have only their wits and brawn to carry them through. So it is with our hero. In the woods of the American Midwest, foul creatures lurk. Tabitha Varna, a young college drop-out scarred by her past, is determined to uproot them or die trying. Sometimes she hopes for both.[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
