《A Fractured Soul》Chapter 5 - Last Stop

The trio made their way to the train station while chatting, their attitude carefree. Nobody forgot the fight, yet it didn’t hold them down. Jonas was happy, just a few hours ago he blamed himself for making Vali and Denny meet. Now he held no such delusions.

“Well, it just means I earned a few days of holiday, doesn’t it?” Denny spoke as they were boarding the train.

Jonas pushed him forward, a bit annoyed. “Piss off, I’m paying for your holidays!” He smiled despite his annoyance. “Doesn’t matter though, I know a guy who knows a guy. Can fix your glass wall and I only have to pay for the glass. He owes me one.”

They got in and picked a corner to stand as the train picked up speed. There were places to sit since the train was mostly empty, but they were going to get off at the next stop anyway. Alex spoke up as she found a nice spot to stand. “I gotta see your uncle’s face when he gets the news though. Vali should’ve burned the slimy bastard’s store to the ground instead of just breaking the glass.”

Jonas laughed before seeing the complicated emotion on Denny’s face. “She’s right you know. Your uncle is an ass, his past doesn’t change the fact that he’s underpaying you by a lot.” He held a hand against Denny’s mouth as he opened it to retort. Denny looked a bit irritated, but he paid it no mind. “Before you even speak, I know, I know. You don’t have to give me your uncle’s fucking lore every time we talk about it.” His hand moved to Denny’s shoulder, squeezing it. “It doesn’t change the fact that he is using you. Remember that.”

Nobody was willing to talk for a while after that. They stared out the window, enjoying the scenery as they thought of their day. The moving lights of the city at night, the small shaking of the train, the silence. All these mixed together at that moment, creating a melancholic mood.

At that moment, something unrecognizable caught Alex’s eye. “What’s that? Did the city hall build a new spectacle, or is that some kind of art thing?” She pointed through the glass, a weird shape in the distance shining with purples and blues. She felt an indescribable feeling from it. I want to go check it. As she kept staring at it, the feeling started to become irresistible. No, I must. Mesmerized, she tried to think of ways to go, she wanted to get off the train and walk there, to touch it, to-

“You ok there?” She felt a hand shake her shoulder, managing to bring her back to her senses. The two guys looked concerned at the disoriented girl.

“Did you guys see that?” She said, her voice weak. It felt as if something was missing from her now. Just another glimpse. Her eyes searched, but the city was blocking her view now. She noted to herself that she would check it out as soon as she could.

The two guys kept looking too, but they were more confused than mesmerized as she had been. “Nothing unique.” Jonas gave up looking after that. He eyed Alex, who was still taking glances outside every second. Huh.

Out of nowhere, the train started to tremble under them. It felt to everyone at that moment as if they had jumped face-first into a pool, but the pain wasn’t physical. Screaming in pain, everyone clutched a part of their body. The pain made them not feel the sensation of falling for a second, causing people to not have the time to hold on to something when they realized what was happening. With a mighty crash that shook their bones, the train hit the ground.

The trio felt the wagon shake like a leaf in the wind, and they held on for dear life. They were lucky since they had stayed up and were already holding on to something. It didn’t help much though. Their bodies jumped up and down, threatening to break their legs. They got thrown into the glass a few times but thankfully it wasn’t forceful enough to harm them.

When it was over, the trio collectively let out a breath. Their moment of respite was interrupted by screams and crying. People were calling for help, some had broken limbs, some were bleeding. What disrupted the chaos was Alex. “Guys, look…” There was a more pressing problem in front of them. They looked at Alex, who had spoken. Her mouth was agape, her eyes wide open. She was shaking too, and at first, they attributed it to the crash. Until they saw her hand that was pointing outside and directed their eyes there.

The city was gone, together with the night. It was replaced with green hills, the bright sun, and raining men.
