《Promise》Chapter 48: No rest for the wicked

In the forest of Anima Perduta, Luna and Kyle were facing overwhelming odds of their own. The witch had shown them no mercy so far and worst yet, their attack looked as if it had little to no effect on her. They were all now low on HP, Luna was less than half while Kyle was barely one third. Things were certainly not looking good for the both of them, not to mention the fact that time was running out. But within those moments filled with danger and adrenalin, Kyle noticed something odd. Luna skill had a passive of slowness and poison, however, although the witch was shot many times, those statues did not appear, and she did not look to be harmed either. Together with a quick analysis of her spells so far, Kyle came up with a theory of what was going on here.

“She is immune to ranged attack, that’s why her HP bar had not dropped down” Kyle spoke to Luna. “How could you know that?” Luna asked.

“No time to explain, just listen to me. You need to get closer to her, I’ll keep her busy” Kyle replied. Luna instantly tried to close the distance as Kyle rushed in once again to attack the witch. Hit and run, just like how Kyle showed her from earlier in the journey, she closed the range between her and the witch while simulated shooting arrows and dodging incoming attacks. Then suddenly, her HP bar changed, it showed that she was affected by Luna skill, they had got their attacking range, now all they needed to do was to slowly but surely bring her down. But it was still easier said than done. The witch HP bar was still at ???, they did not know how much damage Luna had dealt and how much more HP the witch got left. Not to mention, the witch was still casting her magic every second. But Kyle had a plan for that, although admittedly super dangerous, it was the only way. He was going to be the tanker for all of the witch attacks, the lower his HP got, the higher his magic resistance, to a point if he was less than 1% HP, her attack should do minimum to him. So he moved forward, purposely receiving some damage sometime to reduce his HP to the minimum. And when he finally did it, 1%HP, Kyle smiled and just ran straight at the witch. Her attacks now seemed like nothing to Kyle, -1Hp, -1Hp,... that was all she could do to him.

It was time for them to counter, Kyle faced the witch head on at melee distance, with his HP very low, his attack speed increased tremendously due to his passive skill, and the more he attacked her the faster he got and the more damage he dealt (his skill A and B). The witch now faced what seemed like certain defeat as she could not counter Kyle, her attack did minimal damage to him and his natural HP regen can cover that while she was too slow for Kyle to actually land a physical attack on him. Kyle just attacked the witch senselessly, swinging his swords left and right, piercing her body part. Luna arrows also provided the perfect effect to support Kyle, she reduced the witch's natural armor down with each shot and slowed her down, making it impossible for her to defend against their attacks. Though it seemed like their attacks did not do much damage to her, slowly but surely the witch started to show signs of losing completely. It came to a point where the witch stopped casting her spells, “ Finally ran out of mana” Kyle spoke with a smile, the witch showed a clear facial expression of irritation, he was right, the witch had spent all of her mana, and now she was at the mercy of their hands.

Now Kyle did not even need his sword any more, granted he was not very good with it either, he only knew basic simple moves with the sword. Hand to hand combat, this was what Kyle was most deadly at, dodging the witch's slow attacks with ease, he countered with damaging effect, striking the witch at her joints, disabling her movement even more. And then, it was fatality time. As the opponent in front of him could not do anything but accept it fate, he did the final blows, first he did a series of low kicks aiming at the witch’s ankles and knee joints, breaking them all together, completely disabling the witch. Now it was just kneeling on the ground with both knees, desperately trying to fight back with its arms, but Luna made sure that it ended now. The target was immobilized, her Power Shot skill could not miss now, she charged her bow and aimed it right in the witch’s head. “Just die you bitch !”. Luna shot her arrow. The arrow moved so fast that it seemed just like a flash of light just passed through the witch's head. But it was Luna’s arrow and it passed through the witch’s left eye socket and made a hole on the head. Kyle made the final blow as he pulled his swords and swung at the witch body, cutting it in half. The witch dropped to the ground in two pieces; her upper body and her lower body were separated.

It was all over, Luna and Kyle thought. They were ready to share a victory embrace but suddenly the witch's upper body moved. It started to crawl away from the both of them. It was like a scene from a horror movie, the horrifying creature with gray and composed skin dragging her upper body with a hole on its head out of the battlefield. It really turned Luna's stomach seeing that Kyle just casually walked up to the witch's body with Luna close behind and stepped on her neck.

“I told you, you’re stuck in here with me” Kyle said as he pierce his sword throw where the witch’s heart should be and for the last time, it seemed like the witch died for good. But then something happen again, the witch body started to glow and caught on fire, it was looking like it was expanding for some reasons,

“Holy shit, it’s gonna explode,” Luna said. This thing always happens in every single movie Kyle and Luna had ever watched, the big monster bad exploded in the end, why did they not remember such a cliche and standing so close to it. The light became more powerful and it looked as if both of them were in the blast zone. Luna closed her eyes and got ready for what to come. A force pushed her onto the ground and the light got extremely bright then disappeared in a second, Luna was still closing her eyes shut lying on the ground, we could still feel the result of the impact. Somehow, that force was extremely familiar to her, when she opened her eyes again, a very familiar sight indeed. Kyle was the one that pushed her to the ground and tried to cover her from the ‘blast zone’. He was on top of her with his arms tightly holding her closer to him in order to protect her from the expected explosion . And Luna also unknowingly wrapped her arms around Kyle's body as well. They must have been holding this awkward hug for a while before both of them found out that there was no explosion.

After that, they both quickly broke away from the awkward situation and acted like nothing just happened back there. They shared some awkward laughs and talked about how both of them were expecting an explosion that never came and that was the reason they did what they did. The black cloud then finally parted away and sunlight touched the forest, Luna and Kyle both noticed that inside the witch’s house something was shining.

When they got inside, on a table, a floating piece of paper was glowing.

“A spell scroll” Kyle said after she got a look at the piece of paper. “So this is how we lifted the child curse” Luna said. Kyle smiled and nodded his head but then he realized something, there was no notice that the mission was over yet, when he checked the time was still ticking. They had forgotten that they still needed to return to the cursed child one time, but fortunately for them, they still barely had enough time to do so. There was no time to waste as Kyle and Luna rushed to get back to Notre Dame. However, what they received when they reached the abandoned house that they left was beyond their expectation.

They were expecting all the gang would be there and were waiting for them, but what they got was just a note from Liam.

“Please help. Maria is captured by the Temple and likely to be sentenced for being a witch,” the note said. After two days of just running and fighting without sleep, this was not what Kyle and Luna hoped for. But right now their physical condition was the least of their worries. One of their friends was in danger and from what both Kyle and Luna remembered, likely Maria was being tortured. Both of them rushed to the inner city and they saw what was going on, Maria was being taken to the stage in front of the Temple just like Glenda Shaw. Maria just pulled her bow and arrows aiming at the Temple, ready to pull the trigger at any moment to save Maria but Kyle stopped her.

“Not like this” Kyle said,

“We have no time, she needs our help now !” Luna replied, her voice filled with anxiety for Maria.

“Then buy some time, I have a plan. Listen closely and do exactly what I say” Kyle spoke as he whispered his plan to Luna.

“Got it.” Luna replied and ran to the crowd of people watching the Temple’s witch trial, she was looking for Allan and Liam, Kyle knew that those two won’t let her go down without a fight so they must be here. It took her a lot of time but her sharp eyes finally caught Liam and she rushed toward him, however, it seems like he was rushing toward the stage where Maria was being chained. Pushed through the wave of people, Luna caught up to Liam thankfully and managed to whisper to him what Kyle said, “buy some time, help is on the way. Save the Goddess’ ambassador”. Liam instantly turned around when he heard Luna’s voice, he saw her and just nodded his head as he replied. Liam was rushing to the stage to buy some time and Luna caught up to Allan and told him the plan.

Liam did everything he could to buy sometime, right to the moment when he could not find any strength in his body anymore and he could only watch as Maria pushed him away to save his life but she was going to take on the fatal swing from Gabriel instead. But then Gabriel was intercepted by an arrow flying straight toward his head, narrowly missing him. Everyone was stunned, both the Temple and the people of the city did not know what just happened. And then a beautiful silver hair and ruby red eyes archer stepped up and said.

“Stop this instance, stop this instant, or the next one won't be a warning shot.”, of course it was no other than Luna, they had had everything set and ready. “I can prove that this girl is not only not a witch but actually the Goddess ambassador as well ! ”
