《Promise》Chapter 43: Crazy

The people of Notre Dame had come to the place where the creature was taken to. Some brought weapons, others just sticks and stones they picked up on the way. There were about less than one hundred people here. It was unknown why there was so little here in comparison to when they were in front of the Temple, rather they did not bother with this or that they had participated so many times that they got bored. As they slowly chanted and walked to their prey, they heard someone shout.
“My prey, all of you can go back now”, a young man with dark hair stepped further than the others and turned back on them. It was none other than Kyle. “Who do you think you’re giving us orders ?” the people responded to Kyle.
“Someone you don’t want to pick a fight with” Kyle said as he pulled out his sword, his eyes were fearless as ever and he gave all of them that bone chilling cold hearted killer look in his eyes.
“What !!! I know who you are !You’re that famous crazy bloodlust assassin turned adventurer aren’t you. You are wanted in three countries for murdering more than a hundred men before you set foot in this country. Why are such an unholy man like you doing here” someone spoke out from afar. The people's faces changed color when they heard that, even though there was only one man in front of them, why were they so afraid of him, why can’t they look him in the eyes without getting a bone chilling feeling of death.
“Someone paid me to kill this monster and no one can take my bounty from me” Kyle replied with his cold and low voice. “And anyone who gets into my way will share the same fate as this monster” he then slowly walks toward the monster.
Everyone started to freak out. They were here for a sure kill, now it had become something that they might lose their life over. No one wanted to take the first step toward Kyle, they knew that even though they might win against him in sheer numbers, those who stepped first would certainly end up getting killed first. Not to mention from what they heard, he was a crazy assassin that had killed more than a hundred people before, everyone was clearly not gonna risk their life for it.
“Fuck this I’m out of here. I don’t want to risk my life for this. Who knows what a man like him would do next, he might go for me for all I know” someone spoke out. Then chatter between them started as rumours about him spread like wildfire everything from he had killed so many that he lost his soul to the devil to that he sometimes went rogue and killed everyone around him to satisfy his bloodlust. Most people started to turn back and some even ran away from him. As for those who still stayed, they immediately ran away too after they saw Kyle walk up to the creature swinging his sword wildly, blood can be seen everywhere and Kyle’s evil twisted laughter echoed through the sky.

“Nice likely done, Luna, you gave me such a rich background” Kyle said. As he turned around, a young woman wearing a rope covering her head, started to walk up to in from the distance, of course it was Luna, her silver hair and ruby red eyes gave her away instantly.
“I can’t believe they felt for a bullshit story and some pig blood.” Luna said “How did you know this would work?’.
“Do you really think that a brave man will need to go with a group of 100 others to kill just 1 injured and chained monster ? No, these people are cowards, they only came for a safe free kill, maybe like they always did. The moment something goes wrong, cowards run, that's what they do” Kyle replied. Luna couldn’t help but to feel that some of those were meant for her and the others too as the first time they met, they all acted tough but ran away when shit got real.
“Now let's get her somewhere safe,” Kyle said. They put the defromed humanoid creature in an abandoned house also in the outskirts of the city to temporarily hide it and then went back to tell the other.
BRA>1 Hidden quest open, save the cursed child. That was what Kyle and Luna received after they left the humanoid creature. But unexpectedly, none of the others received that hidden quest. “So, you can only join a hidden quest if you were a part of finding it huh. We will need to keep that in mind” Liam said.
“Well that doesn’t mean that you guys can’t help us, it just probably means that you won’t get any reward afterward.” Kyle replied.
“And another thing, why didn’t you tell us about this plan earlier ?” Maria said. “It’s not like we planned this in the beginning, shit just happened and we just went with the flow”. Luna said.
“Enough, can we focus on how to finish the quest ?” Kyle spoke. “How ?, we don’t know a clue about what is going on,” Allan said.
“The name of the mission is to save the cursed child, that is our first lead. Secondly, I think there is someone who may know a thing or two about this mission” Kyle said.
“Who ?” Luna replied. Kyle redirected everyone's eyes to the cursed child. “Can she talk ?” Luna asked.
“We are going to find out,” Kyle answered.
The deformed child was injured before Kyle and Luna could get to her, the Temple must have done it to make sure their followers would be able to finish the job. Maria stepped in and healed the wound with magic and by her medical skills. The child was finally calm enough for them to ask some questions. But the result was not very useful.
It seemed to understand what the team was trying to do to some extent but unable to communicate back, all it was able to do was roar and scratch the floor. It seemed to be a waste of time. Kyle asked Liam, Maria and Allan to head back and searched for any information that might be relevant to this case, either about Glenda Shaw history or about a cursed child.

“Why did you decide to help this child Kyle, aren’t you always saying that we should stay out of trouble as much as possible ?” Luna asked Kyle when all the others had gone back to the city. Kyle looked at the cursed child for a second before facing Luna and said.
“I blame you guys for that. I’ve been around you guys for too long and your personality started to grow on me as well.” Luna was kind of surprised at what she heard. She was half expecting some kind of complicated and well thought plan from Kyle, but listened to what he got to say now, Kyle seemed so … normal.
“Do you remember what I told you Luna, how to read people's minds?” Kyle asked, Luna nodded her head as she replied. “Look into her eyes and see what I see,” he continued.
Luna followed and looked more closely at the defromed child. It was indeed so hideous from the outside that no one could push themself to look at it any closer, it was almost as if some magic was preventing them. But, Luna discarded everything else and only focused on its eyes, and she saw what Kyle meant. The humanoid creature still had the eyes of a human being. It showed clear and raw emotion, no matter how well a person can act, they can’t never truly hide their true feeling, not from their windows of the soul.
In the child's eyes, Luna could see tears flowing in its eyes, the overwhelming sadness of losing someone the matter to you. That was what Kyle saw the whole time, “He has never seen this child as a monster from the beginning, has he. All he focused on was her eyes so all he could see was a child begging for help.” Luna now understands why he decided to go against his own rule.
“So you do have a soft spot for girls that need rescuing huh ?” Luna spoke with a smile on her face. Saying so without remembering that she too was one of them once. Which made Kyle raise his eyebrows for a moment. Time had gone by, it was night time and the rest of the team had come back yet, and Luna was losing her patience, so she decided to get to the cursed child again and see if it was alright. Once again, the child roared and scratched the ground, it’s claws made some very uncomfortable noises. However, something flashed in Luna's head, she had seen this before, no she and Kyle had seen it before. Luna immediately called Kyle and told him to bring all of his belongings.
“Does this look familiar to you?” Luna asked. “No, should it be?” Kyle replied.
“These scratch marks, they are not random, we have seen it before, in Glanda Shaw house, it was partly covered up but I can still see the resemblance here” Luna said.
“What ? They are just scratch marks, of course they would look the same” Kyle spoke.
“No, that's not it, it was the same style, the same kind of drawing almost” Luna said, Kyle had not caught up to what Luna was trying to say.
“It looks like she is trying to draw something but couldn’t, that is why every single scratched area she made almost looked identical to each other, but because it’s not the exact same, we discarded them as just random. These are the same shape and style as those we found in her house” Luna said. “Not to mention, I could have sworn I’ve seen this before from somewhere else too”.
Kyle finally understood what Luna was trying to say. But it was no use if they could find out what the child was trying to draw. And then Luna asked Kyle something, “the map of the surroundings, can I see it ?”. Kyle handed over the map he was carrying and both of them were stunned at what they found out. Each of the stretch marks resembled a landmark on the map, from the city itself to the mountains and hills, even the river and forest had some kind of depiction.
“So that is what she is trying to tell us,” Luna said. AWE + 1, Luna was rewarded after her finding. Kyle and Luna looked at each other, amazed at what they had found. Then they decided to show her the actual map to see exactly what she was trying to tell them. The moment they did so, the curse child pinned its claw onto a specific location on the map.
“Inside the forest of Anima Perduta,” Luna said. “Is that where we will find our answer ?” she asked. The cursed child made some noise and repeatedly pinpointed that location again.
“Well I guess we have our answer.” Kyle said. But that brief sight of joy did not last for long before they received another notice, “30 hours to finish the quest”. So there was a timer on this one too. The last time, though it was not clearly mentioned, Alena's birth mother also only gave them a few days to finish the quest and so did this one. Kyle and Luna did not have to ask what would happen to the cursed child if they failed, most likely a bad ending for sure.
“How long would it take for us to get to the forest ?” Luna asked. “About half a day from the look of it,” Kyle replied.
If they wanted to make it in time, they would need to head out right now. It would take one day just to get to the forest and get back if they were quick and only a few hours to find what they needed. Kyle and Luna got themself in a tough position once again.
“So this is how they make this mission only applicable for the two of us huh” Kyle said “Only giving out clues and answers when no one else is around”.
“No matter, we just leave a note back here to tell them where we are heading and let’s get on our way.” Luna said.
“Wait a second Luna. I want to discuss something with you first” Kyle said.

Fallout: Vault X
An original novel set in the Fallout universe, written to be accessible to all, featuring unique people and places. Vol.II. out now Fallout: Vault X tells the story of John. A vault dweller, who spent every day of his twenty five years underground. Like his father, and his father before him. Proud to live in the last remaining bastion of humanity, all that survived The Great War of the atomic age. Hidden deep below the surface of the earth, toiling under brutal conditions. Year after year, decade upon decade. All to expand into the natural cave system the Vault occupied, building for the future. However, John knew what his forefathers did not, that everything he’d been taught was a lie. After finishing school at the age of ten, John received his standard issue pipboy. An arm mounted personal computer, worn by everyone in the Vault. Used to coordinate the relentless pace of expansion, needed to work as an apprentice. To learn the craft that would be his life’s work. A noble calling to ensure a future for all that remained of the human race. A quirk of fate saw John equipped not with the crude, clunky, pipboy model his father wore. That almost everyone around him wore. His looked smaller, sleeker, finished in a jet black sheen. And capable of doing far more than its drab counterparts. The world above had been ravaged by atomic flames, yet life clung to its bones. The Red Valley fared better than most in the century since the bombs fell. The clean water and rich soil protected by rolling hills. All spared from direct strikes, for the most part. Life survived here. Trees spawned from charred ground, misshapen, green leaves turned red. Along with simple crops, grown wild at first, then cultivated by the survivors. The scavengers of the old world were inventive, hardy people. All determined to rebuild in the ruins of a world they never knew. In the decades that passed settlements emerged. They grew, spreading along the valley floor. Reclaiming the pre-war remnants of the once industrialised heartland. Salvaging the robotic wonders of a bygone age to build their walls and work their fields. To protect them in the dark of the wasteland. But such things are uncommon in this world, and the rarer something is, the greater its value. And the worth of pre-war technology had not gone unnoticed. The last, real, power in this world rested in the mechanised hands of The Brotherhood of Steel. Forged from the mortally wounded old world military. The Brotherhood used its access to the weapons made for a conflict no one won to strike out into the wastes. Men and women were equipped with advanced armour, aerial transportation, high grade weaponry. Accompanied by the training, strength, and will, to put them to use. They established chapters and set up outputs far and wide. All dedicated to a single purpose. To ensure the technology left abandoned by its long dead creators didn’t fall into the wrong hands. Namely, any hands that were not their own. This is the world John escaped into. A place of horrors brought forth from atomic fire. A place where survival meant battling against the darkness. Fighting a war each day to get to the next. And war...war never changes

8 114Cursebreaker
I'm not writing this anymore unfortunately, and I probably won't ever continue it. I guess writing is more difficult than I thought Reto Mason woke up on a mountain, and it was all downhill from there. Until they hit floor, at which point I'm surprised they didn't die to be honest. That is, they didn't die yet. We'll see what happens This is a LitRPG which does have levels and stats, but is more focused on Accomplishments, although expect some more classic RPG stuff in the future. The main focus is on skills, and skill modification/evolution in that regard. Expect some weird 4th dimension stuff eventually, and the weird things that come from there.
