《Manaweaver》Chapter 18

James after waiting to gather a tiny bit of energy managed to slowly stand up. He looked over the bloody scene until he came across his shield. He limped over taking his time to bend down and pick it up.
Carrying it under his arm James slowly limped his way back to camp. Most of the rest that happened was a blur but he did remember his family rushing over to him and Emily looking over him worrying.
He managed to reassure them the danger was gone before blacking out.
“James…. James…. wake up!” he heard a young girls voice as he slowly started to open his eyes. He noticed the bright sun above, also the feeling of going up and down. He looked forward noticing Roy’s short silver hair while he was being carried on his back. It was Susy that was calling to James as he woke up.
Eventually Roy put him down after getting confirmation from James that he could walk. James felt over his sore body noticing bandages wrapped around his head and back.
Emily explained that James passed out when he got back from fighting the goblins. She was worried but shortly after Angelina showed up announcing that the monsters were defeated. The stragglers James had to deal with were ones that snuck by because there were so many goblins that Angelina and the apprentices had to deal with. Angelina had approached Emily and handed her some bandages, ointment, while also commending James’s bravery.
James was woken up because as he was asleep the group carried on as he was being carried by Roy. They were approaching the city where they will be for the remainder of the day because of the attack, then the would need to board the magic train at sunrise the next day.

As he was told of what happened and the plans, James looked over the city known as Ferris. The group was on the top of a hill that lead downwards to a beautiful site. They could see all the over the whole city noticing, buildings, huge walls, train tracks, and people walking around from their position. The city had two sides that were walled up entrances with guards accepting people. From his position James could notice nicer buildings everywhere while a couple were bigger than he had ever seen before James thought the huge buildings were probably important locations but that mattered little to his group.
Before the group started walking James pulled up his stats to check if the goblin fight gained him any benefits.

The group started their long trek down the hill. At one point Emily handed James a bag saying it was a reward from Angelina. As he opened it, he noticed three small and one slightly bigger monster cores. Emily let him know that Angelina mentioned it was a reward for his bravery and he should either save them for school or sell them. His mother did not give her opinion on the matter and instead kept telling him how worried and proud she was. Susy kept asking him about the fight while Roy just acted like nothing happened but kept a proud look on his face.
As the group made their way to one of the entrance, James noticed Angelina taking charge. A mage in a red robe came up to discuss with her about something. James couldn’t hear the conversation, but Angelina was probably confirming that she was representing the school. There were a handful of guards that were around the entrance and small makeshift office buildings, while guards were keeping an eye on new people gaining entry to the city. Two bodyguards stood behind the mage with a set of the plate armor that was the exact same, but one had a sword and shield while the other a two-handed sword. The other guards were a mix of other classes like archer, dual wielding classes, and a range of other weapons being wielded. The armor these guards were wearing were all of different quality and looks but had one thing in common which was that the material was leather.

After a short conversation the red robed mage nodded to Angelina before walking off with his two bodyguards into town. Ferris was most likely a lower tier city and had a single mage to protect it while the rest of the guards were melee classes.
Angelina sent off her apprentices ahead then led the group to enter past the guards. The roads were nicer being made up of gravel and they were well kept. When first entering the city James noticed the street they were on was full of shops with a variety of products and services provided. There was an alchemy shop, blacksmith, tailor, convenience shop, brothel, and a more he did not recognize. The houses which were on streets branched out from the shopping district were all built well with better materials but still were close together just like his old town Othar.

NOVA INTERIT.US
It's 2063, and the town along with much of the nation are in disarray. The decay started years before the Great Event. Our town still had hope thanks to the five families, who'd created a blockchain based water distribution system for the locals, a valuable secret hidden from the Global Water Commission and their network of mercenaries. Earlier in the mid-2040's, right after the state secessions of Idaho, Montana, and Texas, the Global Council of Water Commissioners made their deals and moved into towns throughout the country. They called it "the integration." The Commission and their contractors integrated with municipal water departments, using their organized network to invade like parasites on local services. It all coincided with the 29th Amendment to the United States Constitution, later referred to as the Regional Trident Plan. Nova is a story about survival, power structures, the turning of relationships, and the networking between people and the systems to which they belong. It’s about A.I. blockchain possibility, and its potential for human betterment versus our detriment. It’s about the question of whether or not we need to be saved from ourselves, and by who or what? The Great Event at the end of the first chapter might just be what actually saves us. The epilogue will take place in 2517. This scene is fully sketched and the full arc of the novel is set. I expect to finish Nova Interitus by summer of 2023. This is realist hard-sci-fi dystopian fiction. I hope you find Nova to be a challenging and consuming story. This is not something I planned to write. It all came to me in a dream and I haven't been able to stop writing it. This Royal Road posting is basically a beta test with chapters and drafts to get some feedback and see if there's any readership for this narrative. For the full experience read Nova on Substack. I will be narrating a podcast version later this year there. https://novainteritus.substack.com/
