《Manaweaver》Chapter 1

A young man could be seen running through the woods on a dark and rain filled night. Cuts ran deep across his body and an arm missing wrapped up in his old cloak were all he could manage as he fled for his life. It was a week now that he had been on the run with no breaks. If having to run for his life wasn’t enough, he was betrayed by everyone he knew. Blood covered his clothes as his hope in casting Minor Heal was quickly denied as by this point it would amount to almost nothing with his low mana reserves. He realized he did not have much left in him but did not want to go down easily and pushed himself to keep going.
An arrow whizzed past his head luckily missing while furious yelling could be heard from behind him. He turned to look back as he witnessed a Fireball and Holy Strike in the air amongst other spells and attacks. Throwing his body, he could only manage to fall behind the nearest tree as he barely evaded meeting his end. As he calmed himself for a moment his eyes shined as they turned white while flashes of light and a black cloud could be seen forming above him.
“This is the last of mana that I have……. hopefully I can make it count”
With but a whisper it sounded like the next words could be heard from almost everywhere silencing all other noise.
“Lightning Storm!”
A “Boom!”, was heard as he casted the spell followed by the crackling of trees and blinding streaks of light behind the young man. Trees could be heard toppling over while panic filled voices came from his pursuers. Having used his last bit of mana to buy himself time he kept pushing forward limping as he realized hope was slipping was almost within reach, or so he thought.

Lightning was what he was known as by the people. He was a possible candidate for the chosen five holy heroes to fight the demon lord and its entourage of demon mazhins (demon tongue for hero). Who knew that the people he was motivated to protect and fight for would end up be his undoing? The very people he laughed and fought side by side with or even those he looked up to would turn on him for their own selfish purposes.
He was always a bright young man and could see just how corrupt the people in power were. Still, he believed they he was fighting for a just cause. When it came down to time for the chosen to be picked, he was framed by his best friend and girlfriend when he revealed a possible demon invasion on a town by the border. It also did not help when he had spoken up against the injustices the commoners in a village outside the capitol had to face. He could feel his heart drop when those he had seen fighting for better treatment were silenced for good. Maybe it might have been some bad apples inciting violence amongst the commoners? That thought was quickly squashed when the king came out with a speech blaming those of the village of conspiring against the king and decimated the whole village. This world was rotten he realized!
He was born an orphan but when his elemental nature came about at age ten, he was quickly picked up by a noble family and showered with “love”. Thinking back to his foster family he realized they viewed him as a ticket to more power and wanted to be on his good side considering he had potential.
Lightning nature magic was extremely rare to be seen in classes. For spells, it would be easy to learn some early-stage lightning magic, but classes were a different story. Other elements that share lightning magics rarity are holy and dark magic. This issue with both elements is that they are mainly focused on opposing each other. Lightning has the same ability to dispel both holy and dark magic long-term effects to extent, while also have extreme potency against all classes except for one. This class being earth element which is a subset of nature magic and is focused on defenses. Basically, His future was boundless and after he achieved the class Lightning Magus for his second upgrade, he knew he could make a difference.

But these thoughts were but a quick reflection of his pitiful life as he found himself at the edge of the Death Gorge. A giant scar separated the two empires as he stared down at black smoke which could be seen seeping through cracks at edge and filling the gorge to point you could not see across it. The other side was the beginning of the front line of the dark side of the world also known as the demon empire. Where the demons, orcs, trolls, vampires, succubus as some examples fought to protect for their twisted and dark beliefs. It was believed that this black smoke could lead to corruption but was never proven true.
Standing on the edge the young man looked back as he saw lines of knights, paladins, elves, dwarves, and mages getting ready to exit the tree line. Mages could also be seen in the air as they rode gryphons and mana constructs while also giving him chase. When an arrow suddenly was shot from the crowd it managed to hit his shoulder that held his only arm and he let himself fall into the gorge for the darkness to end his suffering as a sad smile covered his face.

Decompose!
Dear diary. When you read stories about some people missing and returning after years of absence claiming they were living in another world, your first reaction is to scoff and dismiss a story as a tall tale, right? I know I did. All the time. Until it happened to me and I no longer did. That day was today. Some god of thunder smote me. If it were Chris Hemsworth, I wouldn't mind but it was some barbaric Hitite god that abaondned Earth some four millennia ago. Yes, what can I say? I love the seventh art. I have more hours watching movies than any other activity, including sleep. What? Do you think I'm exaggerating? Maybe I am. I'll really miss hollywood the most. And my biggest regret is that I never got to visit the holy city of cinema. I did not come to another world to be a hero even though there was hints that they hoped I'd save it. I did not come with overpowered abilities able to, dunno, leap tall castles in a single bound, faster than a speeding crossbow bolt, be more powerful than a eight-horse carriage, the bounds. No. After the asshole god that murdered me brought me to his world, he gave me some boons from his discount bin and "The Power of my Soul (tm)". Forgive my french, I hope you understand I am rather upset at dying. And he somehow decided that my power is to recycle stuff. How awesome is that? Not much at first, I must admit. At least I got all my camping stuff and equipment with me. There's no lycra in the other world. I'll make it someday, but that day is not today. So here I am. In another world, in the middle of nowhere. I'm no heroine. As the song goes, I'm your basic average girl. And I'm assumed to be here to save the world. But almost everything can stop me, because I'm not named Kim. Wish me luck, diary. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This novel is going have the following features: slow-paced slice-of-life No GameLit / LitRPG elements. Movie references. Sandra likes the seventh art. Journal / diary style crafting (includes chemistry, engineering and metallurgy) low magic technological advancement (for Sandra, at least. She is not against sharing though) personal relations clash of perception between the modern and ancient customs. bits of tension, fighting, and plot here and there. I won't repeat myself though. Once she crafts a good batch of soap, for example, she'll just note, "I crafted soap again." Once it is estabilished how she obtains compound X, compound X2 that is obtainable from the same process will also just be mentioned. I'll try to be as realistic as I can with the crafting, chemistry, and technology. Cover: Public Domain Image by StockSnap from Pixabay. No attribution required but we do it anyway.
