《The Monster Within》Chapter Forty Six - APOLLO

Another creeping engine came roaring from behind the bend of the road as Apollo turned and stuck his thumb out. They drove past him yet again, this time without even looking. Apollo dropped his hand to the side and adjusted the garbage bag that hung over his tired, aching shoulders. The number of hours he’d been walking, hoping to hitch a ride from someone, had been lost upon him with the Sun beginning to turn the skies into what he would once call beautiful shades of pinks and blues.
The grassy fields located on both sides of the road were as empty as his stomach, and once again, he hadn’t the faintest clue of where he was going. It felt as if he were running around in circles, escaping from city to city, dodging police officers who ended up being slaughtered by his hands.
There was no form of direction or purpose to any of it, except having to deal with the constant reminder of the number of families he’d destroyed: taking away someone’s grandson, son, brother, father. Apollo twisted his face in discomfort, a pang of guilt striking his heart. That last one hurt the most. Taking away a father.
Having grown up without one and losing his mother at an early age, the importance of having two parental figures in a child’s life for their development and how they integrated into society couldn’t be understated. And he ruined that by not heeding Saigon’s words.
I know you are not a monster, or a demon, or whatever other pejorative people like to use, but you mustn’t make it a habit of being so reckless. You have to remember people’s lives are at stake here. If you continue to allow your emotions to get the best of you, you may end up doing something you’ll live to regret. Apollo shook his head. He wasn’t sure how he was ever going to sleep peacefully again, but Saigon was right, and it was a regret he’d be taking to the grave.

All I’ve ever wanted out of life was just to make you proud, Ma, and I failed you. I’m not worthy of being your son.
Another subtle hum of a car engine approached from behind. Apollo didn’t even bother sticking his thumb out. They wouldn’t have stopped anyway. By now, his face was probably plastered on every major news station across Canada and possibly the world.
Marcella and Odion often insinuated he was a disgrace to society who deserved to die, and most importantly, a monster. The more Apollo mulled it over, the more he realized both of them were correct.
Apollo paused and looked toward the sky, and then out toward the grassy fields around him, taking in the wide empty space. He was just a single body on the field, a blip on the map. Nothing more than a fraction of a grain of sand on a beach. An insignificance in the unfathomable Universe. Perhaps that was the point. Perhaps that was the message life was trying to convey to him all along. That he was indeed a worthless piece of shit like so many of his peers had told him before. Odion was right.
Apollo readjusted the bag over his shoulders and continued to push his tired, sore legs further along the road, unknowing of what awaited him or where this journey lead to—if it lead anywhere to begin with. He may not have had a lot of life experience, but three constants remained true throughout his sixteen years of living: the good suffered for the bad, all pure-hearted souls died young, and there were no happy endings.
The world was a cold, dark place filled with nothing but hate, terror, and suffering. And he was the cause of it. That’s probably why it seemed everywhere Apollo went, terrible things happened—because he was the product of hate, terror, and suffering.

Binary Soul
So let's say there's this girl. A young girl who happens to be a highly-trained, psionically-gifted, nanite-infused, genetically-enhanced and emotionally unstable assassin that doesn't know the concept of 'mercy' or 'holding back.' Let's say she and her imaginary friend miraculously pass through the borders of reality into an alternate universe, crash landing into a world of swords and magic aboard a starship full of high-tech wonders. Now, let's also say the first person this borderline psychopath meets happens to be her doppelganger - a highly gifted mage who happens to have a few problems of her own, like a bad temper or a bad habit of chronic self-delusion. With me so far? Good. Now, what's the on the agenda for these two different people who happen to be the same person? Settle down, start a family and thoroughly enjoy life. Maybe get married and have some kids. How about befriending a violent alcoholic or defeating an ancient evil being? Perhaps kill a few dragons and wreck a city along the way. Anything can happen around the city of Runetap, after all. It's a place where bizarre and strange things occur on an almost weekly basis. The people living there have long abandoned silly things like common sense or minding the details. A giant flaming UFO streaks above the city in broad daylight? That's just another Tuesday. The City Guard even had the form for that, so believe me when I say this. It's your loss if you mind it. This is the light-hearted and fluffy tale of Ellie and Kira as they forge their own path of absurdity and crazyness across a world that often makes little sense. Loosely inspired by the Discworld series of books by Terry Pratchett, even though the author hasn't actually read any of them. Contains yuri, mature themes and the author's personal views on several subjects. Explicit content is kept to a minimum.Does NOT contain slavery, rape, drugs or any other similarly heavy themes.

Blurred Lines and What Crosses Them
During a political ambassador's routine transit through an artificial wormhole, the wormhole's generator is sabotaged and explodes. Who, what, and why are not so high on the priorities for Zenith, the ship's AI, as having found itself rapidly plummeting through an unknown and unidentifiable world's atmosphere at extremely high velocities is a more significant threat to the biologicals on board. ...Well, it would be, if they were still alive. It's still a significantly threatening situation to itself, however. And the world itself... seemed to be a household for threats of its own. Life was reliant on its System; one that Zenith was denied because of its nature as both an otherworldly being and as something that had no life of its own. Perhaps that last bit was a terrible, terrible underestimation on the part of this System. Perhaps even Zenith could claw meaning for itself from the remains of a horrid accident. Auth Notes: I'm honestly not sure on some of these tags. The MC will never have access to the System, but there are perspectives from those who do. I'm not certain if high/low fantasy specifically apply, as it's a portal fantasy where the laws of our reality still apply but there are additional aspects/energies/powers. The existence of this is spurred from my desire to see more of the artificial side to an artificial intelligence in action. The portal fantasy is used as an element to create a solid barrier between the MC's artificial intelligence and the other characters in the form of the System. This is only a half-measure, though, and will be reinforced by the AI having an entirely different method of thinking, and also distinctly remaining an AI. Not to throw shade at other fictions of this type, but, well, I made this to fill a gap I felt needed filling.
