《The Dark Times》Article 20: Gremlin Success!

The massive clan of computer gremlins that has risen to prominence over the past few decades has had a major success this week.
Despite their early rise to power, and early accomplishments, it has become harder for them to create any significant disruptions in the world as security and understanding of computers has increased and led to better defences.
But after ten years of planning and at 12am GMT last Monday morning, they unleashed mayhem across the world.
It was begun with a small and simple program that was unintentionally developed by a hacker in India and was then adjusted and carefully attached to a number of well-known master programs as a sleeper.
When the program was finally activated all the monitors around the world began to blink to an unheard musical score. Scotland’s monitors blinked to Marie’s Wedding, Wales to Men of Harlech, Ireland to Molly Malone and England to Jerusalem. In another twist, English language computers in Switzerland blinked to William Tell, but Swiss language computers blinked to the Swiss Psalm.
The blinking lured the operators to try and work through to their settings to fix the problem but made it very difficult to get there and discover what was wrong.
Once the blinking was cured it was the signal for the cursor to visibly disappear from the screen although still in place, and more importantly, active. Unfortunately touch screen users had an advantage here with regards to accurately activating what they needed to repair the problem.
The third part of the attack then began. Following an alphabetical sequence, the programs wouldn’t open. First application A wouldn’t open and when the operator opened the program list in order to find the program itself, it would be missing. Once they re-installed the program, the original version would re-appear on the list meaning that the operator would then have to un-install one of the versions. Once A was sorted, it was the turn of program AB then AC and so on through B, C, D etc.

Due to the alphabetical nature of the mis-direction it wasn’t immediately apparent that there was still a problem for many users and this has led to an ongoing confusion which is a delight to all gremlins. The planning was executed brilliantly starting with a small and simple program kept back and well hidden to give it a chance to be initiated into ninety-five percent of the world’s computers.
The day chosen, a Monday, was chosen to initiate maximum office chaos, and the careful worldwide release to GMT time helped catch the whole world in one smooth sweep. The worldwide chaos is the greatest success ever for the gremlin communities, a genius in planning, and one not to be forgotten, no doubt, for centuries.

The Girl in the Abyss
Synopsis: The mysterious force known only as "God's Guidance" implemented a game-like system and rebuilt the planet using continents from five different worlds. Join Ellie, a young girl whose soul is filled with an ocean of love and trust. No matter how horrendous the circumstance or dreadful the suffering her kindness manages to shine through, but everyone breaks eventually. Watch as the horrors of reality slowly chip away at a pure soul until nothing but a monster remains and follow her down the path of despair as she finds a reason to live. ‘Our fate is one that always leads to suffering, but you can smile, I’ll shoulder everything else.’ Warning 1: This story covers very mature themes which I have listed here: Torture of a child (The MC is the victim), death, killing, slavery, and light gore. Nothing sexual ever occurs to the main character. Warning 2: This is another apocalyptic LitRPG, has a brokenly OP MC, bad writing, horrible grammar, and garbage sentence flow. It is my first attempt at writing a story since grade school. Inspired by my four favorite stories: Overlord, CLANNAD, The Arcane Emperor, and Tokyo Ghoul. A note by me: This is not a world domination story or an action story. There is fighting but it's not the focus. Another note by me: This is a work in progress. I’ll likely go back and change stuff a lot. The cover art is by a friend who has encouraged me since the start. Releases: Volume two will not be out anytime soon sadly. I apologize for the Hiatus.
8 195Arcane Societies
Secret Societies, highly influential groups of people who control the world from behind the scenes. Often, they are merely thought to be part of the wild fantasies of the most imaginative or insane people of society. Sett, a seemingly normal orphan child, shared the same thoughts. Yet, his world would be torn asunder when he found out that not only was the world controlled by these veiled organisations, but they also had access to much more than just money and influence. They were martial artists that could split the earth, magicians that could rain fire from the skies, monsters that could eat you whole, and much, much more. This is the story of Sett, an orphan who tries to live his life among the secret societies. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

8 122Marakar
Far from the exploration he yearned to go on, Rae, the Kijah prince, finds himself in the middle of the impending war between Kijah'dar and Ga'ani. Unknown to him, or to the rest of the states, the Kijah Magister plots to overthrow the queen, and he will stop at nothing to achieve his plans. Marakar is a fantasy adventure series about the island states of Mar’narana (with focus primarily on the two states, Kijah'dar and Ga'ani). Tensions between the big players are rising, with more and more plots getting revealed, and powers are unexpectedly shifting. As the string of seemingly unconnected events grows taut, the smaller nations suddenly find themselves into the midst of things, struggling with the sudden shifting of their boards. On a more meta note, I am trying to develop two storylines parallel to each other. As you might have noticed, odd-numbered chapters are very different from even-numbered chapters. That’s because those are the two different storylines; odd-numbered chapters are in the present, while even-numbered ones are in the past. Once the two eventually meet I'll continue with just the present storyline. This story can also be found here where it currently updates every other Sunday (about twice a month). Feedback is greatly appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to read. :) tw/cw list (please take care of your mental health! Don't force yourself to read these chapters if they may harm you). -------> Chapter 14: hate crime description.
