《The Human Conduit》The Battle of Latildra

Azari Yuler crouched down behind a destroyed tank with a pillar of smoke coming out of the top. Glowing beams from polyphoton weapons zipped by on all sides of the tank.
"Alpha squadron, we need you right now" Azari said into his radio. "We're just a few coals away from getting barbequed here."
"We're flying as fast as we can at this altitude, Azari" said an impatient voice on the radio. "We can't fly any higher and risk getting hit by the anti air batteries. If you guys are getting overwhelmed then just back off!"
"No, we're not going to back off!" he shouted as a large plasma bolt hit the tank knocked one side into the air. The regiment of elves remained in place, not budging one bit for a few minutes as the firing ont hem seemed to increase. At last, three different fighter craft fired around a dozen rockets that blew the big pile of junk making up the reptilian's barricades in every direction. All of the elven forces ran straight into the city, easily taking out the Dragon Claw Clan forces inside. They made their way into the middle, where the Dragon Claw command ship was attempting to lift off.
"Shoot it down!" Azari shouted. Many different polyphoton beams all converged on the ship, and the fighter craft fired a volley of missiles. The ship immediately came back down, destroying a small civilian structures. Azari ran right up to the hull of the ship and opened the door, shooting a few lizards as he made his way up to the command deck.
"Where's Krall?" Azari asked holding the gun at the Dragon Claw commander. "I guess he didn't want to be a target in this turkey shoot." The commander quickly turned his body, attempting to hit Azari with his large tail, but Azari quickly rolled under it and fired a shot that hit the lizard right in the chest. The lizard dropped to the ground, completely motionless. A call came in from his phone.

"Yuler" he said picking it up.
"Azari, can you get over here to the staging area" said the voice of Geerhil Golmad.
"I'm searching the Dragon Claw's ship for clues" Azari replied.
"No need for that. I've figured out what the lizards are doing here." Azari begrudgingly exited the ship and commandeered a motor bike inside one of the APCs that had entered the city and raced several minutes back to the staging area. Golmad was pretty much alone inside the foam tent.
"What have you got?" Azari asked.
"The reptilia raided Latildra University's labs. After a thorough inspection of the lab I can say with a high level of confidence that what they sold were intellichine parts."
"Intellichine parts? Are you sure? Weren't most of them destroyed after the war?"
"The signs are unmistakable of them working on it. Obviously, Krillik wasn't being honest about why the Dragon Claw carried out this attack. And I can't think of any other reason why the reptilia would dare trying to take over an area they had no hope of holding."
"Where could Krillik and Avistra have possibly have found them?"
"I haven't a clue."
"I can go have a little chat with Krillik – or even Avistra – if you would like me to minister."
"Don't do that. If they know we're onto them they will get more careful, and we don't want that. For now, I just want to keep a close eye on them. It is obvious Lady Avistra has some secrets and I don't want them guarded any more closely than necessary."
Yuler nodded his head. "I'll inform the Grand Admiral" Yuler said getting on his motor bike and speeding away.

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx.
