《The Girl Named Rino》Prelude 03 : A City In the Distance

On an outlook tower, three stories up, were a sniper and his spotter.

The two, unlike conventional sniping crews, were in mismatching outfits. The marksman was in snow-camo, while the spotter was in jungle-camo. Even the flags that were sewn onto their uniforms were mismatched.

Tens of meters to their left, was a similarly mismatched pair, on a similar tower.

This past month had been pretty hectic. Wyverns, Garmrs and even Ground Salamanders have been invading the city from the recesses of the Fallen Dragon Ridge which was just miles to the north-east.

It was not fully understood why they were attacking like so, but it was probably because of the mountains' shrinking resources. Such was the general consensus of everyone in town.

Luckily, as a frontier town, they were well-equipped for such situations. And, although they did indeed sustain damages and casualties, it was a 'negligible' amount.

"Haaaaah... what time is it, already?"

"9:27"

"Thirty-three minutes to go..." the sniper sighed.

Their shift was almost over, so, they began easing their tensions by talking.

"Hey, isn't Cow Girl-chan taking a bit too long out there?" Asked the spotter.

"Yeah... it's almost gate closing time. She couldn't have gotten lost, right? Or maybe she was attacked... shouldn't we go?"

"Nah... I doubt it. She's probably just stuck servicing those from the Hunter Division, a click to the north-west of here."

"You're probably right. I did notice their trucks earlier."

"Haha... guess we’re stuck abstaining for tonight!"

"Nah... that's okay. It just means I'll be able to let out two days’ worth of spunk inside of her cute little hole."

"It'll probably be all loose by tomorrow though. Fourty-five hunters aren't something that's easily satiated."

"I guess so... either way... nothing changes. As long she lives in this town, she's the MP's cumdump.

"Hahahahaha! True that! Oh speak of the cumdump, It's Cow Girl!" The spotter, who's eyesight was the best among the MP yelled.

{"You guys go on, ahead. We'll cover for you."}

Through a transmitter, the spotter on the other tower spoke and waved towards the pair. Almost as if, they were letting them go first, or more like to leave them alone.

"Alright, we'll take you up on that offer! Come on man, let's go!"

"No need to tell me twice."

With lewd smiles on their faces, the pair raced down the stairs.

Enthusiastically, the two approached the lone girl.

That was when everything went downhill.

If only the spotter's eyes weren't that good, they would've had to wait until 'Cow Girl' entered the area that their spotlights lighted.

Yes, sometimes 'God's expensive gift' will become the reason for your demise.

And this time, was such a time.

Half-shrouded in darkness, 'she' lunged at the pair. Her swift, yet erratic legs ran towards the unsuspecting two. Her arms, a second behind her, were limp and unresponsive.

Her face, though still retaining her previous beauty was now missing a sizable part of it. Exposing the flesh and bone beneath. It was the same for her neck, that exposed her torn windpipe. Her clothes were soaked in blood. And, there was too much of it present to have only come from her.

Her muddy, unfocused eyes held only one motive, 'to feed'. Her jaw was wide open, desperate and suffering from the unquenchable desire, to bite off flesh and sip on steaming blood.

"Huh!?" The spotter noticed, but the sniper didn't.

Half a second too late to react, he was pushed down, and... "AgyahrrrrGGgGGHHHhH!!!" His ear was bitten off.

"H-h-HELP ME!" He screamed again. But this time, it wasn't because of being suddenly attacked - but because of finally laying eyes on the grotesque 'creature' that was chewing on his ear.

"HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-Ggrgrgmrrroooohhh!!!" He screamed for a third time, but was cut off part-way through. 'Cow Girl' had silenced him with a kiss. It was the same way, that the men would kiss her every night, forceful and uncaring.

But this time, it was her doing the forcing. The sniper whose mouth was wide open because of being mid-scream, had his tongue bitten off.

"Ngh! Ngh!" He let out grunts and painful moans. Of course, the three others who were on duty, weren't just standing around.

*Boom* the rifle shot of the remaining sniper, echoed for miles.

'Cow Girl' who was hit by a .50 caliber rifle on her side, was blown quite some ways away, before hitting a tree, breaking her back in the process.

The remaining people quickly judged her to be 'beyond saving' and was 'deader than dead'. They also figured it was the same for their friend, who's breathing had already stopped.

"What just happened!?" The spotter yelled, clawing away at his head.

But the other pair had no way of answering him. They were also just as dumbfounded as him. The day was going to end with them, switching with the next shift, encountering no great events to speak of. Such was the mentally-written itinerary that was shared among the four watchers... though, they were now reduced to three.

The remaining sniper, a tall, small chested woman, was the first to regain her calm.

"Whatever just happened, we need to report this!" She yelled. "I don't think they'll get the picture if we say it over the radio, so you should go in person! You up for it!?" She continued, speaking with the man on the ground.

"Y-yeah! Sure!" Still shaken, though everyone was also the same; he answered. "But what about you guys!?"

"Don't mind us!" Yelled the other spotter, a man younger than him. "We'll be covering you! There might also be more of them, so it's be better to leave a marksman here!"

"O-ok! I'll be back right away!" Convinced, he began running to the city walls. But not before leaving an, "I'll be back with reinforcements!!"

"We won't make it, will we?" The sniper spoke in a grave voice.

"Probably not." The spotter replied.

In their sights, was an army. An army of erratically moving creatures, just like 'Cow Girl', earlier.

Unsavory creatures like goblins and orcs - to packs of Garmrs and bloodhounds. There was also an Ground Salamander, and even a flying wyvern. Also, scattered around were men and women, humans. The ones in camouflage, numbered around thirty - they were probably the Hunters mentioned earlier.

But, most of them seemed to be farmers or people who you would see living in villages. There were even children in the mix.

And, as if that wasn't enough, they were coming from all directions in a semi-circle. Most likely, they were lured by the earlier gunshot.

It DID echo until quite far.

The sight, burned primal fear into their eyes.

"What is going on...? Why... what's making them move like that and... not attack each other...?" The sniper murmured, asking no one in particular.

"A pandemic..."

"A what?" The sniper asked. Confused by the word that she'd never heard of before.

"A rapid increase in viral infection... a fast-spreading disease. That's probably why all the monsters fled the mountain earlier this month."

The sniper paused for a second, taking in the spotter's words. Then, she looked through the sight again. What entered her vision, was the grotesque army getting closer and closer.

"We should go after him!"

"No! Their target is probably the city. We're 200 meters away. They might not even notice us all the way up here."

"Huh!?"

"Look. Just blockade the door. This place was built to survive mortars. What's a few, disease-ridden monsters going to do?"

"Y-you sure...?"

"I'm sure!" The young man - no - boy, smiled reassuring the girl and took her hand. "I promise we'll make it through this."

"O-okay. I believe you."

With that, the woman began putting a long, flat steel bar into place -effectively sealing the place off. "Luckily, we're not short on supplies." She muttered, staring at the cardboard box of RTE's (Ready to eat meals) and the water gallon to its right.

"Yes... but now... do you really think this 'revolution' would get us anywhere? It seems, even the Gods don't want the leader to succeed."

"It was never going to succeed; you know? I just went along because..." the sniper, who was a seasoned war veteran answered, but trailed off mid-way. "...why 'did' I come long? There was nothing in it for me, right?" She asked back, confused and fluttering her long, pointed ears. No, they were always fluttering, ever since she saw that army, they were fluttering in distress. "Geez. Look at me, a thousand-year-old Dark Elf, getting senile and scared like a little girl."

"Haha! Well, it's a nice change from your usual domineering manner."

"Is that, so?"

"It is. It is." The hobbit boy, answered quietly but in high spirits. 'They' were already close enough to be heard. It was an exceedingly incoherent cacophony. Seeing that, he couldn't help but also mutter to himself the same question that the dark elf did. "... why did I even come here?"

Little did these two know, that right below them, were two corpses limping towards the tower.
